Here's a little more progress on Friday and Spigot. Unfortunately my painting time has slowed down since the new year started. The tartan is coming on and is generally a lot neater than my previous attempts (particularly on Spigot). I'm really battling to get sharp corners on the light squares though. I'll probably figure it out just after I complete the last model in the team. :p

I'm planning on finishing the base coat of the tartan (i.e. adding the red stripes) then going back to the rest of the minis to do some touch ups and add some finishing touches. I actually thought I was further along than I am but there will be a good couple of sessions before they are where I'd like them. After that I'll shade the tartan and call them completed. Lots left to do but I'm hoping that I can complete them before I go back to work next week.

Nice progress YetiSA, on the broken bottle get some pure white highlights after lighter green then put gloss varnish over the top, hope this helps

Thanks man. I'll definitely look at that. The bottles I've painted in the past have been square and half full... empty and round will be more of a challenge. :p
While we're on the subject, I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to do the beer mug. I've always pictured it as a lager or similar... something nice and clear, but I have no idea how I'd paint that. Maybe I'll change it to a stout... a headless stout.

The colour you've got already looks good for a lager, add some white to the fluid splashing out the top should add a good effect. On the glass highlight a really light blue at the bottom of each window then fine highlight with white and gloss varnish over the top. Hope this helps

The thermometer next to my front door reads 37°C but the boys (1 and 3) are asleep and that means it's time to paint... My wet palette was dry within 10 minutes.

Turns out there is such a thing as too hot to paint!

Almost Perftec! Aw, crap.
not true, check out the article on here about the ice palette. I tried it this summer. it was pretty good :)

I've spent a little more time with Friday and Spigot, tidying things up, raising some highlights, putting in some very light black lining... oh, and painting the red of the tartan. It's really made a big difference, particularly to Friday, who was feeling a little flat.

Next session will be the bottle and glass then the shading of the tartan itself. After that the minis are essentially complete. Time for one last clean up and an opportunity to fix any problems that I've missed earlier.
If anyone has any problems with the minis (paint where it shouldn't be, insufficient highlighting... general poor technique) I'd love to hear from you.

On a completely different note, I bought a micron black pen today (0.2mm) and used it to neaten up the black dot in these two sets of eyes. It worked beautifully, leaving a tiny circle exactly where I wanted it on the first attempt, rather than struggling to get the paint to actually transfer and then making a mess. What is the general opinion on using these for eyes? I'm in two minds. On the one hand, it seems to be a lot easier and more reliable than paint (given my level of skill). On the other, if I use this then I won't develop the ability to do it in paint and will have to learn it from scratch when you advance to competition pieces. Thoughts?

I have used fine line pens over the years and makes pin point detail and lettering a lot easier, currently I paint these details as my fine line pens are never where I left them (joys of having others having access to my desk LOL)

On the eyes issue, you can try another technique... it may seem more difficult but sometimes (maybe sculpt issues) it is not. Go paint the eye area dark (not necessary black) then paint the whites at the sides of were you want the pupil to be instead of painting the pupil itself. You can also use this to correct an "overgrown" pupil xD
It could be easier because you are not drawing that scary "point" but instead two "stripes" of a clear colour that can be corrected far more easier than black over skin colour.

That "Scottish fanatic" troupe is greatly binded I am desiring a group pic with the new members! ^^ and the cat is purrrrfect xD

You'll find some bottles for reference on this precious diorama: http://www.coolminiornot.com/377461 They aren't broken but they might help you in allocating the "shiny spots"

Thanks Maenas, I'm pretty happy with how they are coming together. After these two I have one more to paint and then the original lineup will be complete... Of course they have just put out a second release with two more models for the team, but those will take a while to teach me.
That diorama is awesome by the way, I've spent 10 minutes looking at it and am still finding new things. It'll definitely be useful for the bottles.

I have heard of that method of painting eyes before but it always struck me as painting two dots instead of one. Maybe I should give it a try on the next mini.

@wargamesculptor, I'm very interested to hear that. It's definitely something I'll bear in mind. I hadn't really thought of using a pen on a mini until I read some tutorials that were linked here. I also want to give it a try for black lining, but probably for minis that I'm painting a little faster.

Small update today, I've added some detail to Spigot's accessories. I'm pretty pleased with the beer mug, although I think I can take those highlights a little further. I'm not so happy with the bottle though, I just couldn't get the transitions smooth. We'll see, I might paint it green and start again. Thoughts?

I'm now very solidly into the home stretch. Next session will be shaind the tartan, then I'll pick out the stitches and patches and (unless something glaring comes up) call them done.

The beer mug is looking suitably frothy. :) The highlights in the bottle in the front view look good, but I'm not sure about the ones in the back view.

Thanks both of you, I really appreciate it.

Actually a big thank you to everyone who follows my thread and particularly to those who leave comments from time to time. I get a great deal of inspiration and encouragement from this forum and it is greatly appreciated. I've been following quite a few of the other WIP threads for a while but have yet to comment on most of them... perhaps it's time for me to get a little more vocal.
