Yeti’s Guild Ball WIP

Almost Perftec! Aw, crap.
Agree with arch. always paint what is under first and work your way out to what is on top in terms of details. Otherwise you are constantly trying to paint around already finished parts and getting paint on them in the process.

Thanks for the comments all.
Yes, I'll definitely finish painting the skin before starting on the laces. The question is more whether I shade the entire leg as a single patch of skin, ignoring the laces or whether I shade each patch between places separately.

That depends on how much skin is showing between the laces I'd think. If there's just a glimpse you could probably get away with shading it as one piece of continuous skin. But if the patches are larger then the lacing will affect the shading etc in each area and you'd need to treat them separately. Hopefully someone with more concrete experience can give you some help.

I would think shade as one piece, the lace in a real world version probably wouldn't have much effect on the skin, maybe a touch darker on the underside of each lace at most

Joker has finally had a session under the lights and here he is.

Overall I'm pretty happy with him, especially given the time pressure, but I'd really love to paint him again, if only to give the face another try. Maybe I'll pick one up for myself as part of a collection of different jokers some time in the future. Here is his gallery link, I really do appreciate anyone who takes the time to vote or comment.

I've managed to wrangle a couple of days without the kids around (thanks to my amazing wife). There are some things around the house that need to get done but I'm hoping to spend a good deal of time painting. I want to make some solid progress on Friday and Spigot. I'm also contemplating starting a longer term project for a competition piece... more on that later.

Have you considered the 70mm version? I think that looks like its be fun but I think they've done more versions and in 30mm

He looks awesome here, I like the variety of purples and how his hair looks alot like it did in the movie (and not bright green like jack Nicholson or 60s jokers)

Thanks Sicks. I haven't seen a 70mm version but I'll definitely look into it. I've been wanting to paint a larger scale mini for a while and this might be a good option. If you're wondering the competition piece that I'm talking about is Obulous, which will take me quite a while but after he's finished I'll look into something a little larger.

Wow, that looks amazing. To be honest, it's expensive to get anything out here. Take what our president recently did to our currency, add it to an unreliable postal system and you have international shopping nightmare.
I tend to buy my stuff from the UK (usually Element Games) because I know which shipping option gives me the best chance of receiving my order at the lowest price. :p

I think firestorm games do free worldwide shipping if you spend £30 or more (not sure what that would be in your currency) but the downside is they only do gaming minis and hobby supplies, they have good service though I've found, even with the free shipping it usually only takes 2 days to get to me, never ordered from element so I don't know if they've got a similar deal

I've used Firestorm before and was very happy. I moved to Element because they had a wider range of non gaming minis.
The problem with all of these free shipping deals is that they only apply to standard shipping and I need to use a tracked option.

Thanks Digga, to be honest, I was pretty nervous in the beginning. I think a lot of my worries were down to the shine. I'm trying out a little matte medium at the moment. It seems to remove the shine but might take some getting used to.

Not sure if it's the subject of this mini or something in the painting but there are some people out there who really don't like it. I'm the type of ocd geek that counts votes and by my calcs, he's received at least three votes (out of ten) of 4 or less and one of those was a 1. The score isn't really that important of course, but it's pretty interesting to see.

Don't get too hung up on the votes YetiSA there's a lot of sniping goes around, I voted and gave it a solid 8, hope to see your second attempt at this

Thanks mate. You're entirely right of course.
The scores really aren't important, but they do give you a metric to judge your progress by so I find them quite interesting. I see that the rating has jumped back up over night. I assume that the powers that be cancelled that 1.

Anyway.

This is the mini that I mentioned yesterday.

He is another Guild Ball model, his name is Obulous and he is the captain of the Morticians team. I don't have any interest in his team but his model is one of the reasons I backed the kickstarter in the first place. I want to paint him as a competition piece so will be spending extra time and energy on him... and I don't paint quickly at the best of times. His party piece is that awesome feather cape, which I want to paint in iridescent blues, greens and purples like a glossy starling.

I want it to look iridescent rather than metallic but I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to pull it off. One thought is to paint them silver and glaise the colours over the top, the other is to apply some extreme (and time consuming) highlighting in flat colour then add some selective gloss... I'm really not sure. I have picked up some iridescent medium from W&N, it may simply be a matter of mixing some of that in when painting the feathers.

Does anyone have any suggestions or possibly some similar effects done by others that I could look at?

Webmonkey used an iridiscent or nacar based paint on his entry for the gods/monsters contest here at cmon... but it is something difficult to appreciate through the pictures. Your idea really appeals to me, and the colour palette of that bird is really beautiful. I wish you the best luck and I will follow your advancements....
I can also think about sc75 alchemy colours (some light metallics that come with their metallic sets) check a few pages back on skelettet's thread to see a green emerald alchemy armour and check if it will serve you as iridiscent green....
