Thanks WGS. I took your suggestion and splashed a little green paint in the eye sockets to see what it looks like... I quite like it. I think that I'm going to do the patterns in a very dark blue so that'll add a little more contrast. I still haven't quite decided what pattern I'm going to paint but I have a couple of options on the table... of course my wife is pushing me to a more complex one than I was intending... but that goes without saying.

I have also started on my next full mini. This is Stave, the big guy from the Brewers team. Unfortunately my copy came with pretty bad miscasts across his belly and chest. I cleaned it up to a point but it is still quite noticeable (I'm not very good at preparing minis :/... something to work on). I'm currently tossing up whether I should try to put down some more liquid green stuff to smooth it out, close my eyes and paint it like it is or try to paint the affected areas to look like burn scars... I know what the right answer is.
Anyway, base coat done so aside from any cleanup I do, the next step will be shading the skin.

The snake is looking good so far, for the pattern I would Google some snake patterns and find one that matches your base colour, my quick search came up with a black diamond shapes pattern, with the scales being lighter next to the black, or large circle patterns, you could see which one you like most and give it a go

For stave you could probably get away with covering the miscast with scar tissue or maybe beer foam, its kind of hard to see it in the pictures but its a way to make him more unique than other people's versions

Diamond back patterns are not overly complex but def give a lasting impression bud....I'm now going to start working with my next project and that's you yeti. Time to get you leveled up.ill be stopping in more frequently.to not TELL you how to paint...cause you paint very well, but more to expose little tricks and secrets that are so practical the minute you try EM it should be evident...so hang tight bud, this shits bout to get RAW!!! ;) lol

Secret no. one everybody on here knows about BAMS secret to even out miscast a join lines ...here's what you do....first you need some gloss varnish from games workshop.think it's called ardcoat..take a good brush load out and put in on some plastic pallete etc..than take a blow dryer and warm it for around ten seconds...at this point it's thickened to where you can pick it up onto a brush like a blob ..than paint that ,lightly letting it fall ,like spackle on the line that has been unevenly miscast .its sort of like filling in a tooth at the dentist ,but where it works really well is longways where there is an uneven join line from the cast.it evens it out if you will..after letting it dry after several minutes you paint whatever color that was used for that section ,like flesh ...and your good to even surfaced...try it out you will ever use another technique again.thats how easy, efficient, and successful it is.

Wow, thanks BAM. That's very generous of you. I'm looking forward to it. :)

Thanks for the tip on clean up. I've already filled this lot with a bit of unthinned paint but there is another area on the mini that could do with a fill so I'll give it a try.

Well the house is still standing so that's at least a partial success. I quite like the process, it definitely helped my pitted area but because I had already begun painting it I was nervous if doing too much. I'm looking forward to trying it on a fresh model some time.

I spent a bit of time shading Stave's skin and it's starting to come together. The repaired area didn't take my glazes very well though so I'm going to have to go back to it before carrying on.

I also did the eyes with my new micron pen and it made a massive difference. They are far from perfect but are the cleanest I've ever painted and probably the easiest too.

I'll get some photos up tomorrow to show you what I mean.

Got a bit of painting done over the weekend and made a little progress on both minis.

Coin first.
I varnished the snake to preserve the shading that I've done so far (which I'm pretty chuffed with if I'm honest). I then pencilled in a few guide points for a pattern that I'm considering. Finally I applied my limitless Gimp skill (straight lines with the pencil tool) to sketch in what I have in mind. Here's the result. Some of the perspective is a little weird but it should give you an idea of what I'm thinking of.
What do people think? Is it 'snakey' enough without covering too much of the base colour?

Stave next.
I've given the whole mini an assortment of washes and spent some time on the skin. I'm fairly happy with the progress for the most part but find that it's a little homogenous. I think I'm going to raise the highlights and reinforce the shadows before moving on to adding some more subtle tones. I'm thinking of putting a little red into the cheeks and nose like I did with spigot and a light layer of purple around the fatter portions of his belly and back.
I'm not very happy with the state of his exposed moob and belly. They were the portion with the bad pitting that (as it turns out) I didn't do such a great job of smoothing in prep. They look better IRL but still not great. Part of the problem is that they are just a lot more shiny than the rest (a side effect of the gloss varnish fill I think). I think that I'm going to hit the area with a matte varnish and see if it makes a difference. If it's still a problem I'll take it back to the base colour and try to highlight again. I'm not too worried about loosing detail there because aside from the nipple and band-aid (which I can re-paint) it's pretty broad.

Well these beer drinking scots look so much fun to paint, and I must say I am super excited to see your progress on them. Your color scheme for them works really well, not to mention the shading you do.

I think that pattern for coin is good, the only thing I would change is the lines on his head, looking at snake pics it looks like alot of species don't have the pattern start until behind the head, others have the pattern on the head too, so I would suggest either a small diamond shape on top of his head or perhaps have the pattern start roughly under the rope, or thirdly something like this one (just how it is on the head)
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=s...ih=600#tbm=isch&q=snake&imgrc=kpFS1pKmfnMtkM:
But have the black lines start from behind the eyes and have a white diamond peak on the very top, of course its easy to say all this but I can't imagine the model is very big so some of these ideas might be easier than others

Stave is coming along well, I think matting down his shiny moob will help alot before you carry on

Thanks Digga, I'm glad you like my work on them. They are fantastic minis to paint, without a doubt my favourite paint jobs to date... They also happen to be my best paint jobs to date, which does help enjoyment. :p
Honestly, I recommend the entire range to anybody who sits still long enough!

Thanks for the input Sicks. The lines on his head were very much an afterthought because it looked empty. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. I do like your suggesting of starting the first diamond there though, I may have to adjust to guides slightly.

Get yourself some matte finish from reaper ,or anti shine,if you can't get those get layman medium (make sure you shake it and test it on something first) these all come in dropper bottles and give direct attention to certain small parts as opposed to spraying the whole model with Matt after gloss. Sometimes when spraying Matt after spraying gloss if used from two diff co.s it can leave the model grainy.ide say go with one of the 3 lil dropper bottles that they come in and just address those areas that need.;)

Thanks BAM, I've got some lamia medium so I'll give that a try. Unfortunately we are pretty limited in what we can get down here but I'll keep a look out for the others. At the moment I'm using the citadel 'ard cote as my gloss varnish and the tamiya flat clear as my matte. They have been working pretty well for me so far.

Took a quick look at the mini this morning and moob is quite a lot less glossy. Will probably still put on some matte before I start working this evening though.

I'm starting to understand what people mean when they talk about agonising over flesh. A touch of purple, too much... back to the base colour... lets raise the highlights a little... how about some red... eee, that didn't work... etc.
You could probably break out of the process at any point and it would be fine... but you carry on going hoping for that perfect tone.

Anyway... here's my current imperfect tone. These photos don't really show it but in the metal he's a little too purple, so he'll be getting at least one more session of flesh before I move on. I'm a lot happier with the moob and belly now, I'm still battling to highlight them properly but they've smoothed out nicely. I'm broadly happy with the face but feel it's lacking something. I also need to finish that lower lip but I'm not sure with what... possibly a light coat of darkish purple.

He's screaming for a five o'clock shadow. There are lot's of tutorials around on how to do it or look at Blood as Mediums recent pirate, or any of Ten Balls and AndyG's babarians.
