Made a little bit of progress on both my figures.

Coin has had his pattern added. I'm a lot happier with the black lines than the white. For some reason I battled to get the consistency right. Anyway, I think they look fairly cool but not very natural. The next step will be to give them some shading/highlighting and try to make them look more at home... not entirely sure how yes so we'll have to see.

I've more or less finished with Stave's skin and am pretty happy. Of course I'll wait to see it in the cold light of day before I make any firm decisions. I took the advice and added a little 5 o'clock shadow... I think it works pretty well. Following BAM's blood advice, I've made his wounds a little more bloody than the other members of his team but didn't want to take them too far because I don't want them to stand out. Watch this space though, I'll be painting Boar from the Butcher's team for the February flesh competition and bloody wounds is something I want to experiment with.

Skin ...-great....wounds-very nice... Coin -yes anytime white or a light color is laid down...the black lining outlining the borders always works out well....great stuff here.

*applause* That five o'clock shadow looks great. Glad to see you've put your Christmas present to good use. :p (For those who are confused: my man and I gave YetiSA a gift voucher to his local hobby/games store so he could expand his paint or mini collection).

Thanks BAM and Arch. Yup, I've really enjoyed the purple wash on the skin and the blood for the blood god. I can see them becoming regulars in my paint box.

Thanks man. Was thinking of shading /high lighting both the black and white with blues to give a little contrast. I'm just a little worried about giving it a particular tint because I want them to remain black and white... We'll see.

Thats a really well done snake pattern in the link, your coin is looking good, maybe try to dial the white down towards a cream for the shading, it should help tie it in with the oranges in the rest of the mini, you are a braver man than I when it comes to freehand lol

Yeah that's more or less the plan... I'm going try to get a similar effect to that link but don't expect to get the same results in the individual scales.
And for the record, freehand terrifies me. I'm really not sure how I ended up doing an entire team worth of tartan.

Haha yeah me too, but I think it's one of those things where you just have to suck it up and try, its the only way to learn

You can also try to mix a little bit of the base skin colour (somewhat yellow-orangey) into the whites and the black.(as Mr. Sicks already pointed out). Take care with the black because it may became greenish instead of a little brownish.

Reserve pure white for the brightest points of the snake's scales.

Also blacks are a lot easier to dilute than whites, you can try to dilute your white with lhamiam medium (I would add glazing medium from vallejo, but I know you work with GW so it should also work, cause they are similar) instead of just water and play with the ratios of the 3 to see if something changes.

Your efforts on the tartans are truly admirable, it's not easy trying new things sometimes, but more often than not it's worth the effort.

Thanks for the advice and encouragement Maenas.
I'm definitely not planning to leave those colours pure black and white, they are there to define the pattern. I think I may highlight the black into dark blue and shade the white into light orange.

This is Boar, he is one of the Butchers from Guild Ball that I think BAM would enjoy. He's also my entry into the flesh competition.
So here he is after one session. This is a base coat of bugman's glow with a controlled wash of... what ever the GW purple is called. Its my first mini using the purple as the main wash rather than the brown agarax and I think I like it. Finally I gave him a 'dry brush' using a glaze mixture of a lighter flesh tone. It's a technique that I sort of made up sometime over the last few minis. I find it's pretty good for smoothing out transitions and will definitely play with it more.

Anyway. This is for the flesh painting competition so it's going to need a little more than simple shading. Once the shading is in place I'll be looking at adding subtle tints, but I'll come to that in the future. Right now I'm thinking about tattoos because I want to get them down while I'm busy with the main layer work. He's a big beefy boy without much of a sense of humour so I reckon I can get away with something pretty butch and traditional, I'm just not sure what.
Any thoughts?

p.s regarding the rest of the mini, I'm planning a yellow/blonde mustache and pretty bright clothes, yellows and reds or something like that... nice and subtle ;)

Like the purple tones in the flesh, you could also add some red wash in a few chosen areas to push it further.
As for the tattoo maybe a back tat as this will give you a large area to work with, does the team have a mascot animal which you could base your tat from ?
Once you've done the tat add a glaze of your upper skin tone over the tat to make it look in the skin

Dogs face may be a little beyond me. To date, the only free hand I've done has been straight lines. :p

Another option I am considering is the butchers logo from the game
