Great start on the skin Yeti ;)
You could do that logo on the doggy too, just as if it were firemarked... (poor little animal) It also seems like a Bulldog so you can go and check the web for colours... but white with yellowbrown patches is what first comes to mind. Also white with black patches, and even another... all coloured tofee brown with a feet or two with white socks ^^

Thanks Maenas,
The doggy is just to show what the mascot is for tattoo reference. Unfortunately I don't have the minie (yet).

Sorry I missread Wargamesculptor post mentioning it so I though you were also going to paint the dog ^^' and as I like dogs more than cats I just throw me into imagining the doggy already painted xD
A bold bulldog face tatoo could work but I do not know which of both (bulldog or butcher's logo) will be easier...

:)

I also considered a stylized boar since that's his name

The problem with all three (and tattoos in general)... is that I can't really draw :p

While I procrastinate on selecting a tattoo I decided to get on with Stave. I've put a bit of shading/highlights into the rest of the mini (trousers, wood, metal, etc.) and... something else... oh right, started on the tartan :)
I decided to make the pattern a little larger than I've done on the previous minis as there is rather a lot of mini to cover with it. Fortunately the folds are also a lot simpler than the previous minis so it went on more easily. I hope to get to rest of the pattern down in my next session and then it's on to the harrowing task of shading it.

Taking another look at these photos, I'm not happy with the pattern across his belly/chest. The lines just don't match the flow of the fabric properly.
I'll take a proper look when I get home but may reset that part back to blue and try again, possibly at a different orientation that will be easier to paint.
Thoughts?

I think you might be right, its most noticeable on the bit coming from the shoulder and going across the belly, another option might be to alter the pattern slightly, there's a few stitch lines there suggesting its made from different pieces of cloth so it might look odd because the pattern matches perfectly, I don't know if it might make the clothing g too busy but you could try doing each piece of cloth sperately

Redid the pattern on the front. Still haven't got the horizontal stripes quite right, didn't get them curving around the round body properly... but I'm happier.

This may be a "spanner in the works" but to me you're missing an obvious thing, his "plaid" is made up of several pieces so to me they shouldn't be either the same pattern or in the same alignment.

Now a couple of suggestions, the beard is strongly emphasised on the jaw, but he's showing little body hair. A 5 O'clock shadow that strong would suggest a bit of a chest rug, used to work with a fella who had hair colour and shadow like that, complete Wookie below the neck.

The "beer" is needing a bit of sparkle, tiny amount of darkening in the deeper parts of the spray, highlight up with Yellow and crests of White.

Thanks DR.
All of the brewers have their tartan made of different pieces. I contemplated doing as you say and making them different orientations (although not different patterns because I wanted them to be McKenzie-ish) but decided against it because frankly I didn't trust myself to pull it off. I'm a little more confident now but I think I'll finish the team as I started them.

You raise a very good point about the body hair. I've also met guys like that, they usually have a distinct line where they stop shaving and the chest hair begins. No idea how I'd paint it though... Will give it some thought.

The beer is still in base coat state. I realised too late that I should have left it off while painting and found that I couldn't stop bumping it as I rotate the mini, so it'll be the last thing that I do.

My eyes my eyes. Miniature painting does give one a very... Colourful search history.
So chest hair seems to range from a slight discolouration to full scale wookie. Since there is no hair modeled here I'd tend towards the lighter side.

Unfortunately I haven't been very successful at finding examples of minis with painted body hair. To quote a forum post I found 'even hill giants tend to look like they've just had a manscape'.
So, without seeing references there are three methods I can think of for painting chest hair.
1) glaze it in like I did with the stubble (not sure this will give the desired result... It shouldn't look like a 5 o'clock shadow)
2) dry brush it on to give it a bit of texture (this could look messy though and would be easy to mess up)
3) paint on individual strands (beyond my skill set the moment, I just can't paint lines that fine)

Does anyone have any advice or possibly some samples for me to look at?

I think if you were to paint it then it would be trying to paint thin strands which could be difficult, the other option would be to model it using a thin blob of GS and a pin to give it the desired texture, if you mix Vaseline into the GS then it won't stick to the model as much and can be pulled off if it goes wrong, you can glue it on if it does go right

Maybe not much help I'm afraid, I don't think glazing would work well, it would look like he shaved his chest and it is regrowing, drybrushing might work but I'm not certain, something my brother in law used to do when he collected warhammer as a teen was add some superglue to some paint then pull it to make strands of hair, I've never tried it myself though but supposedly it used to work

I think Andy G painted hair onto his Conan if I remember rightly.

If if you have a sharp knife and steel wool you could chop that up really finely and glue it on. I've never actually tried that (just a random thought) so I'd definitely try it on some scrap stuff first.

Thanks gents, I'll take a look for that model. I don't see myself modifying this mini at this stage though. Never done something like that before and I probably won't get at this stage in a mini. :p
