Truescale Space Wolves and Fluff Scale Dreadnought

Kaboom!

So, here's a good way to start a new page...

After a 3 month break I'm going back to work on the dread! After a good deal of feedback and some personal soul searching I decided the legs, such as they were, had to go! So...

(insert an appropriate exploding sound!)

The good news is I can salvage at least half the parts... the bad news is, I can only salvage about half the parts.... :)

As far as the mods go, I'm going to widen the stance (and the base), angle the legs a bit more to match the classic pose, and increase the heft by using larger plastic tubing. Even a few odd mm will help them look a bit more sturdy...

Cheers!

Well the leg are at about the 60% mark. Here are the current WIP.

I did notice that the leg armour isn't hanging right. (It is loosely attached.)

I think these are an improvement over the old set shown here...

I still was not able to widen the stance as much as I wanted, but I think these will serve better for Bjorn. Any thoughts or C&C would be most welcome!

I still have 8 pistons to add, cables and the waist armour piece to glue back on.

Im loving the new legs but for some reason the groin and upper thigh still look too stumpy, pmoaratively FW's slight variation to dreads make them look less midget and more mobile, perhaps a slightly lift from the unit between the groin and the chassis?

Note However, i really am loving the dread, beautiful work and detailing, and all round pro scratch building skills!

your truescale marines rock! looks aeons better than the original! :good:

That's really good guys. Marines are supposed to be big and strong and yours are.

Thanks guys! I hope you enjoy the updated Bjorn below!

Thanks! I haven't addressed the waist yet. I spent the whole evening on the claw! I'll have to look over the FW dreads and see what mods they made to the area and see if I can work something in... :)

No Termie Yet... Although I promise that I am working on the prototype.... Honest :p
As a consolation here is the newly updated Bjorn the Fell-Handed prior to detailing!

Here is a comparison again with "classic Bjorn"

and here is a close up of the new claw...

The old claw was way too weedy for Bjorn. I really like the new legs and claw arm a lot better...

So did I go too big with the new claw?

The legs are ace, I think the claw isn't "too" big, Perhaps a 1mm shave would make it less "oh noes! its the clawwwwwww!" I presume your going to bulk it out a-lot more, Really nice use of tank wheel, I have always felt that for some reason the claws on dreads should be more articulated, hinged somewhere, but then, that gives them less jaws of death crushing power? I don't know, on this subject I am at a loss however the thing as a whole is incredibly inspiring.

These guys look simply fantastic- its always annoyed me how out of scale the marines were...especially their unhelmeted head. Its good to see something like this- I am sooooooo going to do the same for my Wolves.

I think articulated claws would be really cool too. When I do chaos marines I may craft them that way for variety! I'm debating wrapping the leg armour with plasticard to make it rounded like the original. This would also add a couple mm of bulk to the legs.

I added some initial housing to the claw and shaved the arm down 1-2mm to shorten it a bit. Please share thoughts freely! :)

and i am still working toward a termie prototype. :)

Thanks! There are many different methods of truescaling so be sure and look around when you decide to dive in. Also plan on a long, long term commitment!

The process isn't easy but I had almost no plasticard and/or modeling putty experience before starting this project so it isn't super advanced either! :)

OO I like the terminator legs, although the thighs are definitely way too thick compared to the knees, feet and shins at the present.

I also think that it would look a lot better if you wrapped the dreadnought's shins in plasticard, right now the flat look is... I don't know it looks weak somehow. The rest of the dread though... freaking awesome. I love how the claw is turning out, I definitely think it could use some detailing too (like that classic power weapon cable and node) It's such a monster too... It seems like that assault cannon should be a gatling autocannon!

HAH thats going to be one hell of a tall terminator, on your dread, the claw housing looks good, starting to flesh itself out, i think to add uniformity to the general appearance you may want to add similar style wrist guard to the fist similar to the shin's, again presume the claws themselves will get bulked out so really cant wait to see how that will look, only thing i might suggest there is, if they are point articulated, at the join to the fist where they meet the housing is, perhaps give them a more dynamic appearance, deviated settings at different heights, BUT then I'm thinking too human and less mechanic at that point, just so's you know i found an old epic pre heresy dreadnaught and some imperial cybots so really want to make a dread based on yours but pre-heresy! inspiration is a winner!

Looking good although I'd make sure to keep the crotch of the termy at the same height as the 'true-scaled' marine. The terminator's are just supposed to have bulkier armour, not be a scale bigger on the giant scale. Right now it looks as if the termy legs are way taller than the legs of your normal true-scaled marines but if you'd keep the crotch and head at the same heights as your normal marines and model the terminator armour around those reference points, you'd end up with a far better model. Wow! I can't believe it's been over a month since I had an update! I actually spent all of my free time for the last 4 weeks organizing my bits!!!! Now that is depressing. :p

This weekend I finally got back to work on Bjorn. I put the leg pistons back in place, added extra armour to the hips, and wrapped the leg armour to make it rounded. (Which I like a lot better!) I also added the targeter to the AC arm, what I'm calling a Fenris pattern Heavy Flamer to the claw arm, and I finally bit the bullet and did the rivets.... all 140 of them!!! Honestly the little beggars are everywhere!!! ;-)

And here are a couple extra shots of my interpretation of the Heavy Flamer. I wanted something sleeker than the standard one and opted for a side by side version which looks more like a twin linked flamer, but I prefer it given the arm layout.

Any ideas or C&C is very welcome. The next step is to make Bjorn wolfy!

I like to build suspense... Either that or I'm just lazy! :) Honestly, between trying to get my business up and running and organizing my backlog time got away from me!

I added a wolftooth necklace and a couple other tiny details tonight. I'm afraid the wolf pelt still has me stumped. I'm not sure where to place it or how big it should be! Maybe I'll be hit by inspiration! ;-)

Cheers!

I like where the dreadnought is going. The rounded armor panels on the legs make it look more proportional. ALso, allow me to echo Khargrim's comment about bulking up the talons. :)

Cheers!

A more detailed claw is coming right up! :)

This is getting more awesome every time I see it! :) Wonderful job mate! :)

Thanks mate! Your advice has been a great help with my first steps into scratchbuilding and sculpting. ;-)

NOW, we're talking

Thanks! Bjorn is a few steps closer to the painting table! I hope you like the next batch of details that are coming right up!

Here's a quick update... and it hasn't even been a full week! ;-)

I added a lot of layered detail to the claw, aiming to give it a more articulated look. I debated adding small round rivets to the joints but opted to leave it clean!

I also added a wolf tooth necklace as a nod to the old Bjorn model.

Some wolf head detailing was added to the hip armour. (I started with screaming skulls but decided I need to stay wolfy!) :)

Andf here is the latest overall shot. I started to build up the base as I want it to be a mix of snow/ice/rock. Given the weight of this fella I want to give him a sunk in look...

Any thoughts are very welcome. I'm still not sure where to go with the wolf pelt but I have decided Bjorn needs a banner... So I think it will be the next item to get added on...

Cheers!

That claw design is a success. Now appears to have the potential to deliver a nasty mix of crush/slash/piercing damage.

That banner and wolf pelt, thought about combining the two? Maybe a banner design painted on the scraped pelt.
