Truescale Space Wolves and Fluff Scale Dreadnought

Awesome! I'm very looking forward on how your Rhino will turn out. The Rhino-size thing has always been something I've pondered about as well. In general, any Astartes vehicle would be huge by human standards I feel, a Land raider would be as big as a house!

Hi, I've been lurking on this thread for a while, and I made this account just to comment... Anyways, I love your dreadnought, rhino, and all of the space wolves you made! You are my hero! I also wanted to ask if you had any templates or the dreadnought, because I'm gonna be starting a true scale pre-heresy luna wolves?

Thanks for the feedback and for taking the time to make an account to comment! Sadly I failed miserably to make useable templates for the dread. I have a few core pieces mapped and the odd list of components but nothing anywhere near comprehensive! I am planning to make him some partners in the not too distant future and plan to make templates as I go for the new model. I may make it 11% smaller - I haven't fully decided!

I am making templates for the rhino as I go and I should start making progress on it again after April 18th!

Thanks mate! The Rhino side structure is done and I should have time to start working on it properly again soon! I'm afraid to imagine how big the LR may turn out in the future! I may need to buy stock in plasticard!!! :)

Hello everyone! It's been far too long since I managed a meaningful update and I have a rather large one today! (bad pun intended) I have been toiling away off and on for a while on a new model to add to my growing truescale space wolves... Sadly it's not the Rhino as I have set it aside to try and get the boys tournament ready for this fall. Looks like I'll be fielding about 60 marines on foot! So much for competitive eh? :)

Anywho, here is what I've been cranking away at while I counted the days until the end of tax season here in the states! For me this part of the project is my most ambitious undertaking to date... The dread was a lot of work but I am very comfortable working with Plasticard, Green stuff on the other hand... not. So it was with a heavy heart that I realized that since I choose to do the great company of Harald Deathwolf (WTH was I thinking) I must have a wolf lord mounted up on an appropriatly sized puppy. And given that I want this army to be either 100% GW parts or totally scrath built it was time to roll out the GS and get busy!

So without further ado, here is my first attempt at a complete sculpt. Say hello to Icetooth...

and a close up

and the mandatory size comparisons...

with a truescale termie

next to the army standard...

and for a good idea on size here he is next to a standard marine biker...

I still have a little work to do on the paws/claws when I base the big fella. For the technically minded he is 90mm long and stands ~57mm tall at the shoulder. After I slap a wolf lord in the saddle the overall model hieght will probably be in the 90mm range... Just like the tip of the standard bearer that is next to him in one of the pics and just like my Dread... It seems that I have an unnatural attraction to 90mm! Someone page Dr Freud will you. :-D

Overall I am happy with the way he turned out although I think that I may have overstylized the fur and I believe that I missed the mark a little with the muzzle. I never realized how $%#$%!!! hard it would be to scratch sculpt a face! Even if it is a wolf face!!!

I did add a slight scar to the right eye (You can see the impression under it but the part above it is hard to see in the pics)

One good thing with the fur on the body is that when I add the saddle/rider it will take away from the stylized effect and break it up a little bit.

Please feel free to leave C&C. I am a real sucker for feedback. ;-)

Cheers!

Looking real nice there! Only complaint I can think of is that it looks a bit stiff but for a first complete sculpt it is absolutely awesome! :) The dynamics come with repetitive practice. :)

Thanks Chrome! I really appreciate the C&C... I actually bent the one front leg as an afterthought or he would have no motion at all! Sculpting over an armature is way harder than I expected. Of course I'm an accountant not an artist, so I can beg off a little... ;-P I'm actually glad that he is recognizable as a wolf. There were moments... well, you know! :-D

christ i'd shit myself if i saw a wolf that big coming towards me!

MMPH! I wasn't ready when I read this and my Dr Pepper came out my nose! Thanks mate! That helped make my night. Cheers...

WOW! Really nice for a first attempt at a full sculpt! And yeah, definitely recognizable as a wolf. Biggest thing that stands out to me is his body shape is too uniform / straight line. The top profile, rather than being a straight line, should have a dip at the neck, have a high point at the front shoulder, and then drop off toward his butt / tail. But, awesome looking sculpt nonetheless. You could do a bit of work in that area as you add the saddle, or if not just file it away for the next one (Surely you need more thunderwolf cav right?!) ;)

Oh, that's a great looking PJ on the standard bearer too. Had you already showed him to us or are you sneaking him into the pic there?

I always wanted a pet wolf ever since I saw "Due South", true story.

Wolves generally don't make good pets. Well, outside of the movies. Something about prey drive and small children....unless that's the effect you're after. Great way to keep kids off of your lawn.

Or any wolf coming towards me.

Last time I had a wolf coming at me I patted it and I got a lick on my hand! Their fur is really something! Sure, this guy was brought up in a zoo and "tame" but still. XD

I’ve seen Wolves in the zoo but never had the good fortune to catch a glimpse of the elusive little buggers in the woods. I have (much to my wife’s dismay) had the good fortune to see a Black Bear with cubs in the woods. She also had the misfortune of being with me on that particular expedition! :-D

I would be ok with a pet wolf. We have no kids and I'm happy to keep the lawn free from em. :p

Thanks mate! I’m not sure how I didn’t notice that before but that top profile is off a bit. I’ll see if I can address it a little as I finish up the rider. The Standard Bearer is one of my early test models from last year. Glad you like the brushwork... He was a real time eater! J

I took a peek at your apocalyptic priest and he is awesome. Did you get him cast?

The wolf is really neat and fluffy. :) Makes me want to give it a big hug. heheh

Cheers!

Ack! He’s not feral enough if you’re willing to give him a hug! Back to the drawing board!!! :-D

Great GS job. That wolf is massive by any standard, I assume it is close to a GW-rhino size?

He isn’t too far off Rhino size. Well regular marine Rhino size. He’s not close to my upsized Rhino Chassis that is in the wings. Interestingly enough, when I started working the rider onto him this week I found out that his size is going to be a bit of an issue…:-O

Ok everybody, I need a little help! Icetooth is so massive that I'm working through exactly what to do with the rider...

Here are a couple of current shots to let you know how far along he is... (The torso/arm are tacked on at the moment.)

Here's what I'm thinking... I'm not a fan of having a bridle on him as I see the rider/mount relationship of being a bit more 'mutual', So I am planning to sculpt the left hand holding the fur in the center of his back....

a couple of items I'm waivering on are

1). do you think the rider should have some form of saddle or just leave him bareback?

and

2). What kind of Weapon should he have in his right arm? I was thinking a frostaxe might look cool but what length haft would it need to look useable? The Wolf stands so high that without a decent reach it's hard to imagine the weapon actually doing anything!

Any ideas would be very much appreciated! :p

I reckon a saddle would be a good idea. Mainly for aesthetics. He'd looks a bit daft otherwise like he'd just jumped on a wild animal and taken it on for a bit of rodeo. The axe,. I would say go about making a glaive style weapon. Long enough to be used at that height and managable on foot. Maybe even strap a bolter to his pack/sadle as an aside.

That wolves are bad "pets" is a myth actually, they are extremely loyal to their pack, to the extent that they'd literally die defending it and especially it's children, they are NOT mindless predators hell bent on killing everything they see. There are numerous examples of wolves having been raised with human families and they protect them like they would protect their own cubs.
Fun fact: did you know that even though it's only the alpha female that's allowed to bear cubs everyone in the pack share the responsibilities of parenting them?

Back on track:

I got the inspiration for my weapon from the Naginata and the western glaive, I'm a big fan of that kind of weapon myself. :)
