Looking great droid,

as for the guns, just with the base colour it looks pretty ordinary, I say give it about 3 or 4 coats of wash (earthshade or similar) and they will start to look fantastic!!! Oh and personally I would green stuff the holes and just paint on the barrels, but that’s just me, as like you that would do my head in!!! Or if you want I have quite a few extra arms for these guys so I could send them to you if you like??? May take a while to get there though, but your more than welcome to have them!!!

the pants, haha I know exactly what you mean!!! With the ones I’ve painted I always paint in some extra details, I know others can get them looking good in simple ways... I guess that’s why most people paint the pants black???

i have to say the skin tones are sensational, I really like how you have done that!!! I’m really looking forward to seeing how you progress with these as they are looking soooo good already!!!

Cheers for the comments guys, helps keep the motivation.

CC - Thanks for the offer mate, that's really kind, and appreciated, but I'm going to persevere them as they are - I'm trying to view it as part of the process and that's part of the fun. I did fill the barrels in in and re-drill them this evening, they're less off centre now, but not quite perfect (milliput was used and in at least one it crumbled more than I anticipated).

I'm actually really into the routine of painting in the evenings now - I'm starting to find it therapeutic haha, so I like to mess around for an hour after I've cooked and eaten.

Redid the copper guns to steel, which I prefer the look of. Worked on some highlights too, and I need to smooth the most abrupt transitions with the shadow on the red armour, but that's become easier to see since I took the photos.

Apologies for the photos - happened to check them on my iPad and the white balance looks well off - they seem very yellow, totally different to the laptop I used to post! Oh well!

I've had 3 weeks of parrot sitting stopping me getting any hobbying done. I did open the bitz box to cannabilise some parts, but within 30 seconds...

I quickly realised little beaks are far too inquisitive to risk breaking out the plastic or brushes.

Now he's gone back home, I've been able to get back to the hobby desk. Working on the heads of the Ork Boyz:

I'm off work this week, so I decided I'd pop to Warhammer World in Nottingham, returning with a bucket load of photos, 3 primarchs (would have been 4 but no Angrons), and Imperial Knight Renegade, as I couldn't resist getting Knights with a significant discount.

On to actual hobby work rather than just purchasing...

I'm calling the Orks done. Photo's uploaded to the gallery:

Photos I thought initially were better than normal, alas, the usual mixture of dodgy lighting, and ropey focusing haha ::facepalm::

Bored of Orks now, and the A-Wing is nearly done (will try and finish it tomorrow), so I started preparing what will be the next model. It's an older GW Minotaur, made of metal, brought about 10 years ago when I fancied trying to recreate the original Warhammer Quest monster collection with modern miniatures

As with most metal models, the fit is a bit sketchy in places, so I had to do a fair bit of filling this morning before I left for Nottingham. He's a really characterful model, and I prefer it to the newer versions.

No paint yet, just starting on prep. He won't have a square base, but he's glued to it at the moment and will be extracted once he's been painted.

Cheers guys.

Yesterday, I varnished and applied some decals to the A-Wing, as I wanted to finish that one off as it's been sitting around for a while.

I've been trying to take photographs against white backgrounds so far for all models for consistency, but because this model is white in places, this was causing me grief when I tried to take the photos, so I've switched to a black background instead. The shots of the left hand side of the picture have come out the best, and are as close a reflection of the model in real life that I've been able to produce so far.

I've uploaded a composite set of pictures to the gallery at: http://www.coolminiornot.com/427340 but I've attached a photo here too for a quick look

Had a quick go on the Minotaur skin this morning

42113146814_8d3dcfdf42_b_d.jpg

The plan on this one is to really take my time, focusing on keeping the layers as thin as possible. I want to really push the contrast between light and shadows, particularly on the skin given there's so much space to work with.

I'm going to treat it as an exploration into skin tones and adding depth using cool and warm tones, and see how it goes.

You've got some good tactics going into this one I think. Skin tones are looking good so far, perhaps could do with just one mid-tone glaze between the darkest and next darkest shades, that'll be all it takes to smooth it out nicely.

Top work though

Thanks for the tip, I definitely agree with the need for a mid tone glaze, for sure. This part is one of the things I find challenging, but I think as long as I take my time and focus on a small area at a time, I should be able to crack it.

Added some highlights to the Minotaur skin this morning. I've taken a few shots from various distances away to give an overall feel, and closer in to help spot what needs correcting:

I also added a bit of a basecoat to the fur around the skin areas I've been working on, just because it helps me see how the colours look next to each other.

Also, random other model on my hobby desk at the moment - a palm-sized Millennium Falcon. This has just been basecoated, the windows painted in using several Nuln Oil layers (using a wash, because it's far easier to fill in the tiny spaces), and a very watered down brown wash (can't remember which) all over to help with an overall weathered look. The kit only comes with stickers rather than decals, so I'm going to hand paint all the markings.
