are those replicas? did you cut and paste them, because they look exactly alike? j/k. The models look absolutely gorgeous. I love the the way the eyes are done. Not over-powering, but you know that it\'s a great focal point on the mini. Good job

Thanks Shawn. I thought you would of had a thousand and one things to tell me what was wrong with them :D phew... Yeah as you can see the osl is only minimal really as i still wanted to paint some of the objects quite bright in contrast with the dark armour. I tried to give them a happy medium.

If you want, I can show you how to make the eyes glow more.

Sure, why not. I havent finished them yet so I\'m all up for a little advice ;)

@war i wish i knew how to do that. my armies would be huge....just like when they mutiply a regiment in WD :) making us think they actually do some work in the studio :p

Looks like you\'re good enough at this painting thing that doing the eyes shouldnt be too much of a problem. First you will need to putty the little groove that runs around the eyes. Dosent need to be completely flat but get rid of 75% of the groove depth. Reason being that no matter how white you paint it it will always cast a real dark shadow and defeat the effect.

Once puttied, paint the eye pure white. Blend the white into the surrounding color/tone but not to far. Look in my gallery and there are two examples of how I did some glowing eyes for reference.

From the center, work as though doing a bullseye. Yellow, orange, VERY THIN ring of BRIGHT red, and then into burnt sienna. Blend all these as best you can. Going out only 1/4 inch (1 cm?) from the eye, project where the light will fall and paint that with burnt sienna.

If you want a REAL BRIGHT light in the eyes put a white dot in the center. If you dont, leave it yellow or even tone it down with some orange.............do that and post some WIP\'s.

Looking real good. There appear to be some areas of either very light or white showing - a box on the fig\'s right hip, the gun the hoses on his chest and the banner. Also the ground.

At this point it is very necessary to see a side by side of the piece with the existing background and a black background.

will sort the background pics out tomorrow shawn getting late this end.

white bits..
Banner haven\'t done any blue washes yet just wanted to check the white bits were looking roughly right position wise.
The box by the hip. Isn\'t exactly white could be the lighting this photo was a rush job at my desk.
The pipes they aren\'t quite white either but are a light grey almost NMM type.
the ground...my bad missed that one.

hope that makes things a little clearer.

cheers shawn..your help is much appreciated be back tomorrow keep up the good work..got big OSL plans for model I\'ve built tonight I\'m sure you\'ll enjoy it...Molten death in the form of the forgeworld avatar...hee hee..

Thanks shawn for the tip ;) I think however, that this is something i will think about for the next time. I\'m getting that feeling that they have been hanging around for too long and i need to move on. Many thanks Shawn ;)

Demonherald: cheers mate. Your piece is looking cool too  Avatar eh? I\'ve been tempted in buying him to paint as the old school avatar i did a while ago really does look outdated :(

Hi, Shawn.

I\'m pretty new to the hobby, but I\'ve decided to take an OSL plunge with my next mini (Alidee from Reaper). It\'s a pretty simple mini; not a whole lot of details. I\'m also going to try NMM for the first time, so this should be nice and challenging for me.

Anyway, someone was kind enough to direct me to your thread. Would it be okay if I posted WIP as I go along and get some advice? If not, that\'s cool; just asking.

Of course it\'s OK!. :D That\'s why I bumped the thread. Read the OSL tutorial a few times first.

Cool. Thanks.

I\'ve read your OSL tutorial quite a few times as well others. I wasn\'t even going to attempt this without reading everything I could find first. I\'ll post some pics once I get going.

Ok, first of all, I know you said in the tutorial to paint it black, but I had already primered it with white when I decided to try OSL. Hopefully that\'s not a problem. If it is, I can always strip and start again. Just let me know.

Anyway, here\'s a few photos. The first two are getting some shots with a single light source to get an idea of how the light would fall.

I always start with the eyes, face and skin. Here\'s what I\'ve done so far (pardon the slightly messy paint):

Your thoughts?

*Edit*: I\'ve done the back of her cloak. However, it\'s just not looking right to me. I know what I want to do, but it seems like it just won\'t come out right. Suggestions?

@Hinton - Okley dokeley then. I finally got to a computer with a working keyboard. The one at home, I have to use the on screen keyboard and point and click each letter with a mouse!!

The first photos with the white fig are a VERY helpful reference for you. They will show very accurately where you need to paint the light and shadow. The awnser to your question is in them. If you look at the white fig\'s and squint your eyes, it\'s easier to see. What you have in the white ones and is lacking in the bottom one is contrast. Start by painting the shadow areas on black or if you have a VERY dark blue. I would use prussian blue for 90% of the shadow and black for the absolute darkest places. Try that first and see if you can get enough contrast to make there be more depth. If you want more, what I\'d suggest is to (using the white ones for reference) paint the highlights a very light blue. Once that dries go over it with a wash of blue. It will darken it a bit and make the blue richer. Try that and post more pic\'s.

Click one letter at time?!?! That blows.

Thanks for the \"squinting\" idea; it definitely helps.

Here\'s a progress pic:

Hi Shawn - I\'m going to attempt my first go at OSL.

Quick question before I start, should I paint the miniature up to a finished mini before I start doing the OSL or do the OSL as I paint the mini?

Cheers
