Hi Shawn Classroom #1 for OSL... TAB

I take it this is the definitive thread to post questions about OSL...?

In which case:

I have a figure stood outside a shop, and I\'m wondering whether to have a light source come through the glass shop door, and if so, whether I should bother trying to cast the figure\'s shadow on the pavement in front of him or not...

If so, I would like to make sure I get the length and angle of the shadow right.

Cheers.

Post a picture with different angles first.

finally...

something of mine to learn from this class. sadly..i have less than 2 weeks to finish so this work will have to be fast and i won\'t complete it as well as needed but oh well :D

this is mannoroth\'s base...

DSC03450.jpg

i still have more work to do to make the transition of lightness a bit better in areas. THe idea is supernatural type fire coming from the deepest parts and lighting the above areas and sides.

WHen mannoroth is placed...i have to add effects on him as well so i may brighten the overall area and have the darkest (less brightest) areas on mannoroth\'s body....as the way it is now, the lighting on mannoroth\'s underbelly will have to be very subtle.

Mannoroth\'s flames\' on back of head and body will also light his wings and back.

Sadly, the piece won\'t be NMM so it may appear a bit strange to some but oh well. No time for that right now...

Thanks for that Tracy :)

I could not upload the WIPs myself - but Tracy kindly offered to.

As you can see - the werewolf figure is exiting a doorway onto the pavement.
(I know the door looks too small - but I figured werewolves would be a bigger than normal humans)

I want the outside to be silvery (As though lit from the full moon)
So I was thinking extreme higlights with SW grey.

For the light from the doorway I\'d imagine some sort of orange-yellow mix to go with the other colours used...?

PS. I use GW colours

PPS. The glass doorway will be closed, so there will be shadow from an \"open sign\" in the top pane, and from the central bar of the door itself.

PPPS. Yes, the pavement looks uneven in those WIPs, but since then I have levelled it a bit and basic coloured the flagstones and the road surface.

@starfyre - Looks good so far. You might want to put some squiggly, very light or white lines in the crevices at the bottom to indicate the light comming thru the cracks inbetween the rocks.

@DaN - Looks like this could really be cool. I would say the usual, prime the whole thing dark grey or black and do the doorway white and the areas on the werewolf and the ground/stones where the light will fall white. Post wip\'s.

Shawn - I have a few more WIPs to post if someone wouldn\'t mind putting them up for you (Or I can email YOU them directly)

I\'m afraid I had to try doing the fur on the werewolf rather than doing it white - but I can always make it lighter on these areas I guess...

Also - one of the WIP pics includes the correct shadow of the figure.
(I will also PM TAB as she kindly posted my last WIPs here)

It would be better if you were able to work out a way to post WIP\'s here so all could benifit. Look forward to seeing what you have come up with.

Thank God for friends huh? :)
HOPEFULLY these WIPs will work (PLUS I can use photobucket to upload \'em too!)

In order:

1> Front view of the werewolf

WOLFWIPFront1.jpg

2> A closeup of the werewolf\'s head/face showing the (attmpted) gradation between dark back fur to the lighter belly fur...

WOLFWIPHeadMuzzle1.jpg

3> Top view - showing the shadow cast by the wolf (By the sun in this case, but by the OSL shop light in the painting)

WOLFWIPTop1.jpg

4> Back view - showing the timber wolf colouring

WOLFWIPTopback1.jpg

5> Closer view (Top left)

WOLFWIPTopleft1.jpg

6> Top right view - Yes, I know I haven\'t done all the skin/claws YET this IS a WIP remember :p

WOLFWIPTopright1.jpg

I think this is in the right order now!! lol

Hehe, well both I suppose.
I will have to show the back wall of the piece up (But not fully attached as it would get in the way) to show the light source...

However, I was wondering how best to show the shading on the \"dark\" side of skin/fur without making

* The skin to red/brown (Using GW flesh paints after all)
* The fur too brown (As it\'s meant to be lighter belly fur)

Once the actual base and figure are \"done\" in the conventional sense, I will post some WIPs with the back wall on - showing the light source and from there I guess you can provide more of a hand...

But for now, just how to best show the shading on the \"Dark areas\" of the figure
(The front side)

Cheers

To try to put it in a nutshell, on the dark side (no, I\'m not your father) EVERYTHING should be duller and darker and try to shift things to the cool side - blue wash? Have the shadows ON THE FIG be totally black. On the lit side have the colors be bright, light and lean them towards warm - light wash of yellow? DONT USE ANY BLACK on the lit side. Shade with colors and dont let them get too dark.

It would be good, if you are far enough along, to see the fig \'in context\' with the diorama. Try to shoot it from the side so the lit door, the lit front of the wolf and the dark side all show in the same shot. Also, do the same shot with a white background and a black background.

Sorry, Shawn. All blocked up and frustrated over here. It seems like I can\'t get the simplest things right. :(

Been through that enough times myself. I understand. Dont push it, it\'ll come back.

Love the tread. I\'ve learned so much about OSL just from reading this thread. Now I have to get my hands on a figure and start. Gotta start for GD 2007....lol
