Tristan, Loremistress - ReaperCon 2007 Best in Show

I painted this as an entry into the Dark Heaven Small category at ReaperCon 2007's painting contest. I was very pleased and surprised when it took not only first place in its category, but the Best in Show award. The downside is that from now on I must enter future ReaperCon contests in the Masters category and compete against some of the best painters in the world, ack! I really worked to push my painting on this, the level of contrast in particular, but I've also been working on improving my photography, particularly in getting more accurate colours. Some tips from a very kind person helped me get a lot further ahead with that! The model comes with a wand in her outstretched hand, but the wand on mine was weakened by bending, so I decided to swap in the bird. A wand and staff seemed a bit of overkill to me in the magical implements department anyway, and I felt like the bird's outstretched wings fit the swirl of motion in the hair and skirt. This is a very different colour scheme from what I originally planned, but I've been having fun with red hair lately and love the colour green and everything went from there.

Fantastic work. Love the look of that fiery red hair against the cool green tones of the skirt. Also i think fate may have been on your side with that bent wand as the bird of prey is a definate improvement.

Congrats! I can see why this miniature won the competition. Everything is painted very smooth and neat and the coc is great. I especially love the skirt -those greens are really beautiful!
