Well, that was terrifying!

Red stripes now in place. I'm not particularly happy with them but to be honest, they have already pushed the limits of my brushmanship so I don't think I could really have expected much more. There are a few spots that I will touch up and correct but generally I think I'll live with it.

My main problem at the moment is that the tartan doesn't look particularly like fabric... and I'm not entirely sure what to do about it. I think that I am going to try to increase the shading and highlighting a little but there is only so far that would help.
If anyone here has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

I'd suggest making a very thin glaze of the darker green mixed with Matt Medium.
With careful brushing so that the majority of fluid is in the dips where shadows are strongest. That may help take the edge off the shine.

It should be pointed out at this stage that the tartan pattern Bevan is using is his wife's family pattern. Which I think is pretty cool.

Thanks Digganob, and thanks for the advice DR, I'll give that a try.

I've been using a little flow improver in my mixing water recently (started on the model before these two). I'm enjoying the smoothness that it gives but it does add a shine to everything that I have to address later. Perhaps I should put a little matte medium into the water too and see if that sorts it out...

Having looked at them in the cold light of day I am actually fairly happy with where they are at the moment (red line thickness aside). There are just a few red lines that don't follow the contours properly and are throwing the rest off, but I'll address them next time I have a chance to paint.

Oh, and Shelagh is right. My wife is a McKenzie so I've been aiming for their tartan.

It's not a perfect match, particularly since I got the wrong light green on these models :/, but I think it's reasonable.

I like the tartan and congrats on trying to make the wife happy. I have on my to do list to paint a tartan pattern for the wife's Cameron clan.

Thanks for the support guys, I appreciate it.

Kruelbear, that looks a pretty intricate tartan. At least with the McKenzie I could simplify it into even blue and green stripes with thin red lines. Would you paint it exactly or simplify it a little?

Definately simplify. I have a little goblin "mooning" everyone with his tartan kilt, so if I did the whole thing I would need crazy talent and I don't! :)

So I've spent a little bit of time on the tartan. Applied the matte mixed with the dark green, which has pulled the colours together and re-shaded/highlighted, which has helped with the flow. With the next minis (I have a few more in this team) I'll complete all the tartan colours before starting the shading. That should tie it together better and will give me more opportunity to correct errors if(when) necessary.

I am now on the home straight with these guys. The last tasks that I have are to paint the barrels that I've just attached to Hooper (I wanted to paint them off the model but they are just too small to handle, add a bit more contrast to the red hat and touch up a few places where paint has strayed where it doesn't belong.
I'd really appreciate a little input at this point regarding finishing touches. I've been staring at these guys for so long that I can barely pick out their distinct parts anymore. Is there anything on them that you feel is unfinished or could do with a little more love? I'd like to get them finished over the next painting session or possibly two. After that I will be hard coating them both for the table and then hitting them with a matte varnish, so I'm not too worried about the shine that they have picked up.

Cheers ten ball.
They have now been varnished. Tonight I'll be adding a little more detail to the bases and hopefully getting my lights out for a photo shoot.

Tapper and Hooper are finally done. Thanks to everyone who has given me advice and support in the process.

They have been a lot of fun to paint and overall I'm very happy with them, I think that they are a step above anything that I have painted before. I'm still not entirely satisfied with their tartan, it's just not as smooth and consistent as I'd like, but I have three more minis lined up to receive the treatment and another couple coming next year so I've got plenty to practice on.

Anyway, here are the final minis. You can find more pictures of the individuals in my gallery
Tapper
Hooper

As always, I'm trying to improve so any comments or criticisms would be greatly appreciated.

Very nice. My only critique is that I would make the stitching a different color than the patch material. Solid 8's to me.
