yeah but i don't actually play so i'll probably just pick up the minis i like, quite keen to see the new hunters guild too, but i think fishermen will be my next set then maybe the odd few characters to flesh out both teams on the off chance i do find anyone who'll play it with me :p

Heh, I know the feeling. The gaming scene is very quiet here. I've got full brewers and union teams so I can play and then a smattering of other models I like, notably boar and obulus. Really love those sculps but want to take my time on them so I'll finish the brewers first.

Huzzah!
I finally got my brushes out last night and got some paint on some models... not much... but some. :)

I've decided to start with the bash brothers (Hooper left and Tapper right). I'm blocking in their base colours together since they're pretty similar and will decide which way to go once that is done.

Colour sketching is totally helpful when you're not entirely sure where you're going to end up. It's my excuse and I'm sticking with it... :)

As we've discussed: how the pros completely finish one section (eg skin) and then move on without ruining things down the line I have no idea!

Thanks all. It feels great to be painting again, pity I have so little time to do it.
So these Brewers have a vaguely Scottish thing going for them and when I started painting them I decided to man up and try my hand at some tartan. Now my wife is a McKenzie so I only had one option to go with.

I mucked around with a few swatches based on the colours I had

and eventually decided to go with a slightly modified version of second from the left on the top. Here is the final result.

The flames were already going to give some nice contrast to the blue so I kept everything else pretty neutral.

The rest of the team is going to be pretty similar to this but more of their clothing will be the tartan (Stoker is a bit of an odd one out in the team... not many people will paint him first). I plan to use red as an accent colour so I'll use it for Hooper's cap... I'm not sure what to accent on Tapper yet so I'll keep my options open for the moment.

coming along nicely, the tartan is what put me off the brewers guild, that and i lived in scotland for a while, thats enough drunk scots for anybody! you've done the tartan well though and his bottles look really nice too

Thanks Sicks. I was also against the tartan at first but I saw Phil from Guild Ball Tonight podcast's tutorial and decided to give it a shot. I've only done it on this small area so far but it isn't as hard as I expected.
To be honest, I shamelessly nicked the bottles from JTY's paint job... pretty happy with them though.

Got another decent painting session in last night and more or less finished the base coats. I should probably have left the wraps around the staffs and plasters until after I'd done the main highlighting but I panicked and painted them anyway. In my next session I'll do some cleaning up and then start selectively washing some of the sections to give a shading foundation that I can start highlighting from.

Incidentally, the mini on the left is a limited edition resin and the one on the right is metal. This is the first resin mini I've painted so I was interested to compare it to painting a metal, which is one of the reasons I decided to do the two of them at the same time. I must say, I now completely understand the appeal of resin. The metal is not a bad cast by any standards but the resin is sharper and cleaner with smoother surfaces. My only worry is that I don't know how strong it is and I will be gaming with these guys... still, I see more resin in my future.

Just a small update. The base colours have all been blocked in and some of the model has had a light wash. I've also done some work on the foundation of the skin, from here I will start to highlight it, leaving this as the darker tone in recesses. Not entirely sure why Tapper's (on the right) skin is so much smoother than Hooper's since I have been working on the two in tandem... guess I'll have to give Hooper a little more attention before working up.

(Sorry for the noisy background. I was painting during the day time for a change and it didn't cross my mind to put in a back drop because I don't normally need one.)

I've been making slow but steady progress on these two guys and they are starting to come together.

I've just about completed their skin, although I will go back to it at the end to smooth it out a little and add a little extra colour.
The trousers are also more or less done with the exception of the lighter leather and I've done the first pass on the blue... cloaks? They won't be seeing much more at the moment because they will be getting the tartan. They're shiny in the pictures because they were taken just after I stopped working on them last night.
This evening I will be working on the wood and the metal.

What's really peculiar to me is the difference in quality between the paintwork on the two. I've been working on them together, swapping between them constantly and using the same mix of paint... and yet Tapper (top) is so much better than Hooper (bottom). His transitions are better, his finish is smoother, his face and eyes are better and he hasn't had nearly the same shine problems that the other has.
I haven't painted many minis in tandem before... is it a common problem or is it just me?
