So with one thing and another I haven't done a lot of painting in the last month or so... and I must say that it's been surprisingly hard to get myself back into it. My attention has been wandering, I've been alternating between being bored and intimidated and have limited myself to surprisingly short sessions because of it. Fortunately it looks like that's finally starting to change and I'm getting a little of my painting mojo back. It's taken a while but I've got the base coats down for Mash and Esters. This time I decided to do the main tartan pattern during the base coat stage rather than after the rest of the mini was completed. I think this is a good idea for a number of reasons, it means that I'm not as worried about the edges, it can be done in stages so it doesn't feel so much of a chore and having the painful part out of the way means that you don't have that anticipation the whole way through the paint job. It also means that it would be easier to recover if I made a complete hash... which, mercifully, I didn't. I still need to put the red lines in but ran out of time this morning.

A few things of note from the last week.
1) I'm using my new series 7 for the first time and... wow. They are SO much better than the best 'normal' sable I've used in the past. They are soft but stiff, carry plenty of paint and come to the most amazing point, even in the large sizes. I would thoroughly recommend them anyone in this hobby spend the extra and pick up a set.
2) I've been painting with a larger brush than normal (series 7 size 2). It's taken quite a bit of getting used to but I quite like it. The quality of the brush means that I still get a good point but it holds so much more paint and feels great. It does mean that my brush control has taken a step backwards (I'm blaming the brush rather than my recent lack of practice *cough*) but I'm starting to get the hang of it.
3) These minis are a LOT bigger than Gandalf. They are 32mm to his 28 and are large minis in the range, putting them closer to 35mm actual size. I must say that I'm enjoying the larger scale a lot more. It could be that this is the scale that I'm used to or that I'm just not quite up to the smaller mini yet, but I'm really enjoying them a lot more. Now I'm definitely looking forward to trying my hand at something larger.

Anyway... wall of text aside, here are the minis as they stand. I think that these two will be fun.
(incidentally, the things on Esters' waist are hops, which should be green... but I decided to make them brown just to distinguish them from the leaves).

Next I'll be adding the red stripes to the tartan, then I'll start shading the skin.

Nice start to the mini's mate, sure you'll be back in full swing soon as your painting as come on a long way since the start of this thread, and your always pushing yourself to improve so take time to reflect on what you've already achieved

Zab

Almost Perftec! Aw, crap.
find something to listen to that keeps your butt in the chair, for me it's audio books or podcasts. I can paint for hours when one of those is on.

Thanks guys. Zab, that's a good idea. WGS, I'm sure that once these two start coming together I'll be hooked again. Just a matter of paint through. I'm back in my comfort zone too and that helps.

Small update but huzzah for enjoying painting again.
I've added the red to the tartan effectively completing the base coat. I'm now tossing up whether I should shade it so long or leave it for later. On the one hand it would be nice to have it completed, on the other hand, it is a lot easier to clean up any messes that I happen to make if it's still in plain colour.
I've also added a wash to the recesses in the skin. These will need a bit of a cleanup but they're a start. Finally I've painted in Esters' eyes. I'm not completely happy with the left one but I'll wait until my next session before deciding whether to redo it or not.

Thanks Digga, they still aren't as neat as I'd like but they are a lot easier now than when I started.
@SaintToad, she is quite a lady. You may not be surprised to hear that her in game big play is "the show ain't over..."

Thanks Sicks, I hope so.

I've taken a couple of days off to accomplish a few important things... instead of doing those however, I spent the morning painting. :p
Shading on skin done, although I still want to give it a little more interest (blue in the shadows, a bit of shadows in the face, etc). I've also done some basic shading on the hair, although there is still a lot to do there too.

I redid Ester's left eye... but she now looks very squint... 3rd time lucky?

Did I mention how much I was enjoying the larger scale minis? Because I really am.

Oh, and before anyone asks me... no... Mash will NOT be getting chest hair. :p

There's bound to be one pretty boy in the group who waxes his chest mate, so should get away with it ! LOL
Painting is coming along nicely and the squint look onEster works with the placement of the helm

Thanks WGS. I'll live with them for a little while and see.

It turns out that I don't much like working with the mini partially assembled so I've prioritised what I needed to do before sticking Mash's arms on. That means the skin, tartan, beard, horns and arm wrappings (although these need another look). They're starting to come together now. I see that I had the bat and hands at the wrong angle while shading them and that a lot of what I thought was shadow is actually facing upwards. O.O They'll need another look.

Next I'll be doing Esters' vast... dress. Then Mash's leathers, followed by the remaining metals, woods and other details.

I've really tried to push the contrast on Mash's skin but I'm not sure whether it works or not... what do people think? Have I overcooked it?

Whew, what a week. Friday was opening night for my wife's play (ArchArad was in it too and absolutely stole the show). We had a lot of last minute work to finish the chandelier we were making on time and I was roped in at the last moment to drive the follow spot. Add that to a sick wife and the inlaws coming to visit and you don't have a lot of sleep in the Yeti household. With a little bit of luck I'll get back into painting next week but in the meantime, here is the chandelier that took so much of our time. It's around 1.8m wide... which it a little larger than it needed to be if we're being honest. Still, it has received a lot of attention so can't be too bad.
