Woot, my birthday present to myself just arrived. The Betty Edwards colour book (so I can return ArchArad's) and a set of the series 7 brushes. They are my first kolinsky sable brushes and I can't wait to give them a go!

Also, thanks Shelagh :)

I voted and commented. This is beautifully done and that cannot be overlooked. By any and all means this is your best. That's what practice does for people and add to practice some new and wonderful things to try can 1)boost confidence when painting from that point in and 2) enhances your skillset so now you can choose any and every model you like and not just the ones that compliment your style!!!lemme know when and how I can vote for the flesh fair!!! I got you there as well buddy!!!

You won't be disappointed with the brushes, I've only used mine on the last few minis (after waiting for my gw brush to die) and the quality improvement is vastly noticeable and helps boost your painting dramatically imo

Thanks Sicks, I'm hoping so. :)

Thanks BAM, although I'm still convinced you're only saying that because it's my first mini with blood on it. :p
Unfortunately the CMON voting public don't seem to agree with you (his last five votes have been two 6s and three 5s... I'm the kind of geek that keeps track of these things). Ah well, it really isn't that important.
Voting for the feb competition starts tomorrow, will post the link here.

Anyway. Here is the beginning of the Gandalf model I've been promising for a month. He's not the most dynamic model and with a name like Gandalf the Grey there isn't much you can do with the colour scheme. :p

Instead, to add a little interest, I'm going to use this as my first excursion into OSL. The mini is actually from the Mines of Moria set so that gem in his staff is supposed to be the only light source in the room. Here is the scene in the movie that the mini seems to be based on.

We've got a long weekend coming up in SA (the one before Easter... this isn't a productive time of the year for us) and I'll be going away so won't be painting for the next week or so. I guess that will give me time to read up on OSL.
I'm not sure if I'm going to make the gem and therefore the light white, blue or yellow. Hopefully I'll have a decision before I come back.

If anyone has any hints or tips about OSL, that would be great.

And I'm back.

We went away to my mother's farm in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. It's an 8 or 9 hour drive from where we live so we don't go there often, which is a great pity. There is no communication or even electricity down there so it's always super relaxing. It's an extremely dry area of the country but they've had a lot rain recently so it was beautifully green (English readers are excused for sniggering).

Here's me and my oldest boy before his first ride on a bike. He was a lot happier when we got back but unfortunately the camera had been put away by then. :p

Anyway, enough of that.
I've had a nice little break from painting and will be getting back into the swing in the next day or two. The plan is the give Gandalf a go and then move onto the next two brewer figures.

While I'm posting, here are the final photos of Coin the snake. I'm afraid that I lost interest in him a little and rushed the final few steps, meaning that the white on his scales never quite got to where it should have been.

Here he is in my gallery for a couple more angles. Comments and criticism are always appreciated.

What type of English readers are you referring to? The propper ones or the rebellious one ;)
It looks like a beautiful place and you guys had fun.

I am with Digganob on this one. It sounds like a blessing to have no electricity for awhile, but my wife would hate it...and the snake is looking nice. ;)

Voted and commented... ;)

Wonderful landscape!

I know what you mean on that travel time.... My grandfather has some terrain "just" 6 hours by car from here but we almost won't travel the distance if it's not for more than a week (I don't have a driving license so we need to take a subway, two trains and a taxi drive) so it's almost inaccessible for us. Still it's a beautiful and really calm place too.

Beautiful scenery, sadly I sunburn too easily to ever visit anywhere that warm so I will have to see it through photos

Coin came out really well in the end :)

Thanks all.
It is a fantastic place. Nothing to do but relax and enjoy the views.

Sicks, you might actually be surprised. This is officially the coldest part of the country. In fact the farm across the road from this one (belonging to cousins of ours) measured the coldest temperature on South African record a few years ago (-22 C). Even now, at the beginning of autumn, it was going down to almost freezing at night, which was a welcome change after the summer we've had.
It comes from being high (over 2000m at the top of those mountains) and windswept.

I wish we could have stayed longer, but my business really doesn't let me be completely uncontactable for very long.

Real life continues to get in the way of important things like painting, but I have made some time to work on Gandalf.

I gave his face and beard a cursory highlight and then started working on the shading of his cloak and hat. I haven't given the belt, scarf, staff or (of course) sword any significant attention.
The intention is to go have the gem in the staff as the only source of light in the scene (taking a lot of inspiration from Bailey's unbelievable hobbit). The effect is starting to come together but I think that I need to make it more extreme for it to be really noticeable. I'm just a little worried about over darkening the grey, particularly in the front.

At the moment, more or less everything is 'pure' grey (which is surprisingly tricky to highlight). I've been going back and forth on adding a little colour to it (probably via a glaze once the shading is pretty much done). If it wasn't for the OSL I'd probably give each different fabric a slightly different hue just to distinguish them but I'm not sure if I should do this here. I'm also considering giving the light a slight tint, probably blue and then add some dark orange to the shadows.

I've also altered my shading approach a little for this model and have been attempting wet blending (using one and two brushes). I think that I've been mixing my paint a little too thin for that though because the result is not particularly smooth. Will carry on playing.

Overall I'm not feeling particularly comfortable with him, I'm just not getting the smoothness I want and the lighting effect isn't as pronounced as I would like it to be (yet).

Also... 28mm is a LOT smaller than 32mm! Those eyes were hard (and I'll probably go back to them again before I'm finished).

Looking at these photos there seem to be white dust specks all over him. I'll need to address these. They are weird though since he's living in a sealed display cabinet... hmm, they actually seem to be right on the top of the painting I did last night... maybe they are in my matte medium that I used before taking the photos. O.O

The OSL effect is starting to show in the work you've done since I last saw him. I'm really proud of the way you've kept pushing yourself recently - the effort and time is definitely paying off!

OSL is starting to show up keep doing what you did for it seem that it will show through ;) Not sure about that orange tint that you mention though, have a look at the movie scene for some ref. ideas.

Also when you do that wetblending don't go with a full loaded brush or you will loose control and precision.

I believe dust forms everywhere, and more important if you ever seen a beam of light coming from a window in the afternoon it's all those lil millions of particles.the moment you open those doors on your cabinet it will move from an area of high concentration to low concentration.iow you still get particles. Happens to me all the time I use a keyboard cleaning Airgun.

Thanks for the comments all. I am enjoying pushing myself but being outside of the comfort zone can be... uncomfortable. :p

Unfortunately I've had another week without painting. My (limited) free time has all been taken up with a slightly larger scale project that I'm doing for the wife. We're part of an amateur dramatics group (as is ArchArad). These days we take it in turns to be in productions so that one of us can look after the kids. It's my wife's turn at the moment and she is playing Granny Weatherwax in an adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Masquerade (think Phantom of the Opera as a comedy who-dun-it). Anyway, she volunteered me to make the chandelier and my last week or so has been measuring, cutting, swearing, shopping, measuring again, cutting again and swearing some more. :p
There is still quite a lot of work to do but it's starting to come together. I'll post a picture or two once it's done.
The thing is massive though, around 1.8m diameter and 1.8m high... I really hope it doesn't come down on the audience. O.O
