Yaaaay arch.....Oscar nominee

That's what I said!

I managed to get some painting in last night, focussing on Esters blue dress. I'm not sure why, but it's really fighting back. I've been battling to get either smoothness or contrast out of it and have had take it back down to its base colour in places. My best guess is that my glazing style isn't particularly effective on this blue so I might try something different, most likely layering. I should have some time to paint again tonight so with a bit of luck I'll have something to post tomorrow.

Sometimes if I'm struggling with a blend I'll do it in extremes for example if I'm doing a blue I might go from the mid tone straight to the highest highlight glazed in then use something in between the 2 to blend them together, hopefully you can figure something out :)

Glad to hear the play went well, that chandelier looks impressive :)

Thanks Sicks, I'll give that a try. Glazing up from the mid to the highlight, even through a couple of steps just wasn't achieving anything.

Gave it another go last night, this time with thicker paint in a more layering technique. It worked a lot better although it's a technique I'm not familiar with so it's not particularly smooth, especially in the massive... well lit area. I can only assume that the citadel light blues don't dilute very well and aren't really suitable for glazing, something to remember for the future. I might at some point try again with a little more medium or flow improver in the mix water, we'll see.

So here they are after the latest session. Nothing much has changed on Mash other than a bit of clean up around where his arm attached. I really don't like working in separate pieces and joining after they have been painted. I always end up making a mess of the paint somehow, either through too much glue (like this time) or chipping or or or. Practice practice I suppose.

Esters dress has received its highlights (I still need to do the collar). They haven't ended up quite as high as I was intending but I'm a little nervous to take them further because I don't want the material to look shiny. I guess that I'm still scared of the contrast hammer. :p I think that I'll leave her like this and possibly take them up a little later.

Next I'll be doing the leather and fur, followed by the metals and then onto the accents and details.

Sometimes it can be good to revisit the highlights when you have more of the colours layed out as it can show you how far you need to push it, keep up the great work

I think the blues are looking good on ester, particularly around the back where there's more folds and stuff, the top part of her chest does look like a bit of a nightmare, it's flatter than a space marine tank lol (although I think she probably doesn't get called flat chested often if ever :p) o can't remember what the brewers emblem looks like but maybe you could try to paint that on their to help break it up a bit, or perhaps get some of that transfer paper that lets you print off custom transfers for it

Yep, that bit is crying out for some freehand I'd say. Maybe 'YetiBrewers' in Viking or college football script? Or a pair of jugs (tee hee)?

Thanks guys.
Freehand... hmm, interesting ideal. If I did then it'd probably be some sort of theme that I could carry on down the hem as well. Possibly something hopsy to match the hops in her hand. I'll give it some thought.
Sicks, the brewers crest is what's on her belt buckle.

Thanks Hairster, that does look cool. May have to simplify it a little to bring it in line with my skill. :p

Ha! At the time of posting I was questioning whether I was being a bit ambitious and would be able to manage it myself....

Well the wife's play is finally over and things have started to settle back into normality. I have really been looking forward to getting back into regular painting and last night was the first of those regular sessions. Strangely though, as my moment of freedom (read: kids' bedtime) approached I found myself making excuses and finding reasons to postpone that first session. I'm enough of a procrastinator to recognise the signs though, so I sat down and painted... and really didn't enjoy it. Half an hour later I was looking for excuses to stop but I decided to push through and managed to get in a good three hour session. As one might expect, it wasn't the most satisfying session. I wasn't working well and never quite got into the zone... but I pushed through and it did start getting better towards the end.
It seems to be a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy. I haven't been painting so I've lost some skill so painting is harder so I don't want to paint... etc.
I may or may not get a session in tonight but I'll definitely be painting tomorrow and the day after that and hopefully over the weekend. I plan to make a really concerted push and try to get back into it. Will see how it goes.

Anyway
I made some incremental increases on both. Put some highlights on the leather, wood, fur and Esters' horns. They will all need another touch I think. After that it's metal, and details (stitches, wrapping, hand full of hops, etc.). I'm still in two minds about free hand for Esters. I think that it would look cool, but I'm not sure that it fits with the style of mini, especially across the bosom. If I do it, it will be the last thing I do on the mini, so I've still got a bit of time to decide.

Think we all have those situations sometimes Yeti....definately harder to push over the line on a project if you have been distracted from it close to the end.

You'll find the motivation when you least expect it I imagine.

Looking good though still...huge fan of the laborious tartan on all these GB binis you have painted.

Thanks Hairster, the tartan has been fun and terrifying and fun and terrifying. I'm glad I've done it but I suspect that I won't try it again until I'm quite a lot better.

I hope people won't mind a little non-mini related diversion but this is my only real outlet on the internet at the moment so I thought I'd post here.

My other major hobby is singing and I've just put up an acapella song on youtube

I actually recorded most of it last year but had to stop because I picked up pneumonia. Anyway, I had to do a little recording for the wife's play and finished it while my mic was out. It's a little ragged in places but I'm quite happy with the result.

Sometimes it has to be forced. It's cool at certain points it's hard to find your muse but it's always there..just force yourself and when the level up happens here and there the reward of producing better and better models will keep you going.;)great job on these two.i like the fat ladies chest the way it's painted.

Thanks BAM. I'm also leaning that way wrt her chest. Just need to do a little clean up and possibly take it up a little.

I did get a session in last night after all... and you know what? It went a lot better. I still didn't get properly into the zone and had to force myself not to stop every 20 minutes but at least I enjoyed it. I'll carry on pushing and with a little luck I'll be back on the wagon in no time.

These two models are now rapidly approaching completion. I reckon two more short sessions and they'll be ready for basing and the gallery. Neither is quite as polished as I'd like but they'll be fine. I should probably start preparing my next team in the mean time.

If I find myself making excuses for not painting I usually do some stupid work like preparing fresh minis. This sets my thoughts into motion: How to place this one, what could the base look like, how to arrange this, how to deal with that... This brings back my muse and I soon feel like doing some real painting. What also helps for me is having a really tidy workplace that only waits for me to sit down and start. I am not an overly tidy person at all. So I force myself to clean up everytime I leave the table. This includes also replacing the brushcleaning water. When the table is ready to start, the resistance to sit down and actually do some painting is much lower.
