Back from the dead!

Threadomancy! :tremble:

Hello everyone! I can't believe how much time has passed since I posted any updates on the Truescale Space Puppies! The project isn't dead but suffered a massive delay and I apologize for the long absence. Life handed out a beating but my wife and I have emerged bloody but alive. My Father in Law died suddenly back in 2011. Then just as I was getting back into the swing of things my Brother in Law died unexpectedly less than a year later (he was my age!)... All of this was followed a few months later by my Mother in Law having a stroke. Luckily she made a full recovery!

So let's get on with the good stuff! I started back into the hobby a few months ago and have slowly been picking up steam. The Space Wolf project is far from finished but with the release of the new Books I dove back into it with a vengeance! Here are the 2 newest units that I have added to the roster.

A second pack of 10 Grey Hunters.

And a pack of 10 Blood Claws (The backpacks are magnetized to allow them to swap out to Skyclaws... I don't see myself using Skyclaws all that much so I decided it wasn't worth the effort to make a dedicated unit) I did a lot of work repositioning the legs on several of the Blood Claws to make them more dynamic.

And I can't help but post up the Great Company Standard. "Rally around the flag!"

I'm working on a full shot of the Great Company and expect to have it within the day!

Welcome back man! Yeah, the Circle of Life slaps us all in the face from time to time. For me it's 2014 that's turning out to be a very nasty year indeed...
But nothing better to zen out with that some paint, a brush, and teeny tiny details that'll hemorrhage your brain if you strain too hard.

Awesome wolves man, awesome wolves. Doubly so because they're oldskool grey!

Thanks Mate! Chilling with the brush is better than beer... well for me at least! Glad to find another fan of the oldskool grey. I love it!

I'm really excited to get back into the swing of things and here is what is what is on the truescaling desk:

A Lucius pod for the Dread
The Rhino template
A LandRaider

and since I've done Harald Deathwolf's Great Company I really need to do the big man himself. My first attempt at a Harald model was a disaster as I'm not yet far enough along to pull off a complete sculpt. The big problem I ran into is that no one makes Sci-Fi Wolves that are anywhere near large enough to fit in with my theme. In the end I settled on the Scibor Giant Celtic Wolf. (Even though it has a some proportion problems.)

I opted to redo the tail to follow the GW stylized fur and 'try' to do a better proportioned more Wolflike head from scratch. So far I just have the basic head shape roughed out and will be attempting to add the details soon... and the painted wolf in the picture is Haralds original GW Thunderwolf which I include in a Fenrisian Wolf pack in the army. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Now that looks like a wolf that can support the half-ton of a Space Marine.... :D

looking good, welcome back

Now that looks like a wolf that can support the half-ton of a Space Marine.... :D

Thanks guys! I managed to crack a tooth over the weekend so there was not a lot of progress... other than now I get to have the roots pulled out of my tooth tomorrow! :tremble:

I did manage to get a full current army shot. So far the army has:

Logan
WIP Bjorn
2 x Rune Priests
4 x Wolf Guard Terminators
17 x Wolf Guard in Power Armour
10 x Blood Claws
20 x Grey Hunters
18 x Long Fangs
12 x Fenrisian Wolves
6 x Drop Pods - Meant to carry 5 marines each so no clown cars! :)

So at the moment a Grand Total of 72 Truescale Marines

On the Workbench I still have

6 x Wolf Guard Terminators
1 x Wolf Guard Power Armour
1 x Wolf Priest
1 x Rhino Template

and Harald on Icetooth...

Also started another 10 pair of legs for another squad. Hopefully I will make some progress this coming weekend after my tooth gets fixed!

Flippin' 'ell! That must the largest truescale force ever seen, no doubt... It would be a joy and an honour to have my midget Blood Angels fight some xenos scum besides those Vylka Fenryka!

Thanks mate! My Wolves would be proud to take the field next to your Angels... Although they would be a little jealous of your brushwork and weathering... erm, well maybe it's me who would be jealous.

Ah no man, the only thing different is some sponge chipping and an oil wash.

Hi everyone!

I was able to get enough painkillers down the hatch to work on a few projects over the long weekend! First up I did some freehand work on Bjorn. I added the wolf rampant over a diamond on the upper chest and Bjorn's Pack marking to his one leg. After 2 years of not painting much my brush control is a bit rusty but overall I am ok with how it turned out.

I took a second pic with my metric ruler next to him to give a good indication of scale. He clocks in over 90mm on the base.

I'm waiting on some bits to sculpt a wolf pelt onto his trueclaw arm and have not decided how to decorate his other leg armour or assault cannon just yet. Any and all C&C's welcome.

I'm curious to see the rest of the assault cannon. I'm hoping for the mother of all ammo drums... :p

I was also able to work on Harald's wolf Icetooth a little bit as well. This is the 7th try at getting the jaws of the wolf to look ok. I'm still not 100% satisfied but I believe I may be hitting the ceiling of my ability at the moment. Once again, my 2 year break from the hobby is causing some serious pain as I am having to relearn a lot of basic skills. Any thoughts on how to improve upon this guy would be most welcome as I am stuck. From these pics it looks like I need to rework the eyes as I got some Green stuff in them and muddied up the details. Maybe I need to try and add some wrinkles to the nose and brow to get more of an expression out of him?

And a couple of side projects I started on for the Wolves... I'm pretty excited about both of them but after doing all the initial Math I've realized they are both going to take a while.

Wanted to show the dirty side of freehand, otherwise known as the ugly hot mess I start with. The way I learned to do freehand is

1. Rough out the shape with some thin paint
2. Block in the colours
3. Clean up the design
4. Shade/Highlight and add details

I'm still old school so no airbrushing, no decals, no templates or masking... just thin paint, a small brush and very little breathing. This is a pic of step 1 where I am trying to paint Bjorn slaying the Serpent on his Leg armour. Does anyone have any thoughts on how this may look best? Should it be finished in muted grey tones, use the actual colours from Bjorns original back banner design that this is based on or should I just make up some new colours and move to step 2. :D

Decided to make a first pass at blocking in the Bjorn design late last night. Since this is an homage to the original Bjorn back banner from a couple decades ago I gave the traditional colours a go. So I've moved onto step 2 with a toe into step 3 of the way I learned freehand. The US penny is for scale reference. Any thoughts on the colours?
