The weathering is over the top, but extremely nice looking. On a robot that looks like it was transported out of a 50s sci-fi movie, it makes me want to know the story behind it! I really like these models, and I like the color scheme you've used.
I do think that you should have some smaller patches of either rust or paint, or both. As it is, it is mostly large blocks of one or the other. Do you mind telling a little more about the technique you used on the rust? It really does look fantastic!

Thanks! It is completely over the top but that fits with the story, which I hope will be clear when finished. I agree about some smaller patches. Will definitely do that.

My weathering technique is pretty mixed. I start with a vmc chocolate brown base, then stipple on various mixes of vmc biege and gw trollslayer. I also did one light stipple with a bit of vmc ivory around the upper edges. not realistic but adds a highlight.
The trick is that all the stippling mixes have some plaster added for a bit of surface texture. That helps loads, specially when finished off with a really light drybrush. Generally of gw leadbelcher and vmc steel.

Once that's all done i use AK interactive streaking grime, slimy grime and dust deposits. the first streaking grime is treated as an all over wash, more like a filter, which gives a nice aged look to the base coat. then subsequent more precise areas blended with some thinners and a sawtooth brush.

Hope that helps. I should record a vidéo probably. Much easier to show than write.

Cheers.

Happy holidays all. I hope the hobby santa has been kind. I was luckily enough to get a bunch of hordes figures, a new daylight lamp and an iwata airbrush.

Happy Holidays to you too ;)

Loving that weathering, looks really aged and used. I agree with those more rusty spots that SaintToad mentions, for the moment I find the pale yellow/pale green-blue a bit pale, but I think adding those rusty areas will bring in a nice punch and I also understand that the actual palette just adds to the faded/aged feeling of the scene so it really gives that 50's scent, so that shifts and revolves any initial thinking.

Im definitely going to add some more rust but i think ill work on the partner model first, then try to match them up after.
I quite like the colour palette now. The temple guard base coat was far too saturated but i applied an enamelnfilter which both toned it down and helped it all gel better.
More to come soon.

Ok, so not rust patches on this one (yet - I may add a tiny bit) but the weathering is almost done. I want this one to be in better state of repair, as he sends his buddy to do all the hard work. That said they've been going for some time, so they both need signs of wear and tear. I like the slightly streaky nature of the grime on this one. Looks old and used but not too far gone.

Wip kastelan robot.

I'm definitely looking forward to watching that video. Thanks for making it and, yeah, make the rust one, too!
I like the hell out of that latest kastelan! The small patches of deep red work really nicely against the large volume of pale greenish grey. I also like that you've got a story in your head to help you make painting decisions! In keeping with your idea of their relationship, maybe you could do some bullet/explosive damage on the more worn kastelan?

Watched the very nice video on the enamel weathering. I love the effects you're getting (and I really like enamels for finishing models, myself).
I have a couple of questions.
1) You mention 'enamel brush cleaner'. I assume you're just using the thinners, but am I wrong? Are you using another product to clean them than to produce the streaks/blends?
2) I like very much the look of the metallics down in the crevasses (especially in the toes). Are you doing anything other than the edge clean-up that you demonstrated at the end of the video to get that nice contrast of color & shine down in there?
Thanks again for making the video. I'm looking forward to the rust one, too!

Thanks! Glad ypu like the colours I wanted to nod to some ww2 colours but keep the scifi theme.

As for the metals I tend to do the clean up with thinners as you noticed then, if needed, i'll pick out a few highlights with vmc steel just for a bit of sparkle, although often i tone it down with a little agrax. I love working with acrylics and enamels. Makes for some great options.

Brush cleaning is done with revell enamel brush cleaner. The thinners I use for the grime are much gentler. The revell stuff is way too strong for weathering. Plus it stinks. The odourless thinners are from AK interactive. not the cheapest solution but allow subtle effects, not that these robots are subtle!

I'll do the rust video in the next few days. I use a couple of methods so will probably tackle them separately.

Hi all. Hope you had a good holiday. Apologies for the delay but I got knocked sideways by a virus. Anyway, here is the follow on video where I show one of my rust painting methods.

And here is the early stages of my next mini. Dozer and smigg, although without Smigg. I wasnt so keen so removed him and sculpted a little cover up where his feet were.
Enjoying this model loads. A great casting and lovely sculpt.

Wow. What a year. I've been all over the world, moved my studio and been completely rammed with magazine work.
Thats meant almost zero painting time but last week or so things have returned to normal. Looks like it should be calm for a while so I've got a dedicated painting desk in my studio.
Move picked up a few minis to paint up so will be posting soon. Looking forward to catching up and being inspired by you all again.

Good to to be back!
