I imagine someone has noticed the change in his front page to read ...

He\'s a saint, I say! A SAINT!

Na, wait a moment.... asshole! That\'s what I meant. Boohoo, I\'m so sorry I made money from your free work, please accept this sincerely wet handshake while my wife boils my lobster.
He read this and got scared, simple as that. DR, I say prosecute his ass to hell for using your pictures!

(...must... not...hack....asshole....site....)

Can you really hack this guy\'s site, Mosch?

There are many things I could do that would probably be called hacking. However, I will not do it - there are legal ways to get on his nerves. Basically, whenever I say something like that it\'s an empty threat ;)

personally id be furious if i had taken the time to put an article together only for some idiot to claim it as there own and make money from it.
it seems this person is now trying to change the subject by now wanting to do a pdf thing for CMON.
the only thing i can see is he has broken copy write laws and he has made money from other peoples work

OK, so I am confused, are you trying to say that johnboyjjb is the guy who ripped of the articles in the first place and is now trying to change the subject? If so keep this in mind the asshole on eBay is from the UK, johnboyjjb is from Washington State US. Don\'t think this is the same guy.

I guess what really pisses me off about the whole thing, I had one small article in this. My small article took me the better part two days to do, I purchased the items to make my wet palette, then took the time to make the palettes, photograph step by step, and do a write up, then bundle the whole fricken thing, and put it on CMoN! I did this because I thought it was a neat idea that I wanted to SHARE with my friends and fellow painters. Heck if I wanted to make money on my article I guess I could make up a bunch of my palettes and put them on eBay. I don\'t I had what I thought was a cool idea and having some penis breath asshole come along and try to profit form my hard work really angers me.

I am glad to see dick breath is no longer selling this ebook, I will be watching him for a while to make sure he does not start selling it again (once all the hubbub dies down)

Mike, I say go after him for all of our sakes.

This would then protect the authorship rights and could be an easier form of access for CMON members.
It would need the work of a moderator, but since I\'ve stuck my head over the parapet, I\'m willing to do this.

I think this is an excellent idea DR! :D I think also if you posted instructions (for us less technologically adept people lol ) on how to do this and stickied it in the articles section all new articles can be done in this format and the only ones that would have to be redone are the current ones.

It\'d be a huge job. I went into my acrobat writer and opened up a couple of pages, so much stuff needs tweaking and editing, it would take someone a very long time to reformat all those articles well
As far as I know, all the articles are in a database with their pics. PHP has PDF generation functions. A bit of dev and the whole thing could be automated (I haven\'t tried it, but a quick search gave me this Open Source solution : HTML_ToPDF is a PHP class that makes it easy to convert HTML documents to PDF files on the fly : http://www.rustyparts.com/pdf.php; another more global solution can be found here : http://www.fpdf.org/?lang=en). The articles are already moderated on submission so it shouldn\'t need more moderation IMHO.

I have a question.....

Having just read this thread from start to finish - no small task I can tell you! - I am a little worried.

When I see a really good article on CMON, I usually pull it into Word, run spell checker/pigeon english checker, jiggle it about a bit so it fits nicely on x pages and then print it out for reference. (I have a nice display book with them in)

Does this mean I too an elligible for a lynching??? If it helps I don\'t let anyone else read them - not even Avicenna - and they are purely for my pleasure (cue Homer voice) ::Mmmmm....pleasure.....::

I don\'t mean to make light of this thread, as I do not agree with what the bloke has done - certainly not to make money from other people\'s hard work - but I wanted to be sure that people who have written articles are happy with what I (and probably others) have done with them.

I do own a shredder, so am happy to convert the pages into Limited Edition CMON Confetti available at £2.50 a bag
:innocent: ;)

I don\'t think anyone will object to this. I for one would be happy if you printed my article several times and gave it to your whole neighbourhood. The problems we had here are a)the author\'s name was (in most cases) removed and b) the articles were sold for a profit.

I think if you don\'t do anything like that just go nuts.

I wouldnt object to that as it makes it easier to use the articles.
Im pretty sure someone mentioned using the printer friendly function on my skin painting tutorial in the forums.

Several people have asked if they can use my articles/tutorials on websites etc and my reply is always something like.
\"Most certainly as long as you give me credit for it.\"

I think I speak for many of us when I say I am more than happy to help people but I am not willing to be ripped off.

eg

Tooshy saving an article and editing it so she can browse it in comfort = helping.

Dickwad saving article and selling it on for his own profit = being ripped off.

tooshy: I\'m pretty sure that you have the right to print any material from the web for offline viewing. IANAL but that precendent MUST have been set sometime...

I am still sending this guy a C&D letter today. Basically the same as DR\'s, but I added a bit about international copyright protections (the Berne Convention) because I am posting from Canada. Despite his protestations of ignorance I think this was a rotten thing for him to do - and the apology DOES ring hollow as long as the money stays in his pocket! Plus he might be hoping we\'ll all forget about this, and in 6 months he can start selling them again.

My C&D:
This letter is to formally instruct you to Cease and Desist in the provision for purchase either by direct sale, via auction on eBay or any similar site, and to include the cessation of provision to obtain by electronic means and/or any further distribution physical or electronic, of the Book “The ULTIMATE Fantasy Miniature Painting Ebook”

This Book contains articles taken without leave or permission from the Website WWW.COOLMINIORNOT.COM .(Henceforth referred to as CMON) Said articles contain images and written content, the copyright of which remains the sole ownership of the original Author.

In specific issue is the denial of my right to be identified as the author of the article “Steal Stuff From Work” written by myself, Allison Mackay (Known on CMON as “No Such Agency”) in accordance with the Copyright, Design and Patents Act of 1988 and the international Berne Convention. This article and the accompanying photographs are original works by me, to which I retain copyright. Under the copyright laws of both Canada and the UK, and under the Berne Convention, copyright does not have to be formally registered or declared – this article is copyrighted by me simply by virtue of me having created it.

You did not seek my permission to reproduce this article for personal profit, and in your copying remove my details of Authorship. Said permission to copy, edit or amend the Article “Steal Stuff From Work” is hereby expressly refused and fully denied. Said permission to copy, edit or amend any future articles which may be written by myself Allison Mackay (a.k.a. “No Such Agency”) is also hereby expressly refused and fully denied.

Failure to comply with this instruction will result in legal proceedings to establish copyright and standard publication fees for all existing copies either retained in your possession or having been sold.

On a more personal note, I think what you are doing is not only illegal but also highly reprehensible. You profited from unauthorized selling of material you did not have permission to publish. Your knowledge of wrongdoing and deliberate infringement is shown by your removal of author names, aliases and copyright notices from your reprinting of these articles.

You may feel it is safe to ignore a Cease and Desist Notice from another country, or from people you suspect will not “put up a fight”. That would be a mistake. You infringed on a great many authors\' copyright in the publication of this ebook, and I believe many of those authors would enthusiastically support a legal challenge to your infringing behaviour, including seeking a financial judgment.
I think I will remove the last paragraph, as it doesn\'t state anything that is not simply the copyright holder\'s rights under the law (and was written \"in hot blood\" which is never wise in a legal document). I do feel it\'s important that he know the notice was not sent \"automatically\" - that there are actual people out there noting his behaviour (and any future reoccurrance of it).

Close, but missed it by 2 points.
It was Theodore Roosevelt, and the phrase is Speak softly and carry a big stick.

Oh, and T.R. was quoting an old African Proverb.

Now, walk softly and carry a big stick would suggest you are sneaking up on someone to club him from behind.
