Smoothing of things always looks good. Alot of this stuff is up to you and how far you want to take it. The colors, if you want to go in that direction would be done with washes at this point.

I wasn’t really able to get much painting done this weekend, and no picture-taking.
Here at least are the pics taken last week in front of black velvet.
Interesting how I had to turn the exposure on the camera way down in front of black as compared to in front of blue.

I intend to embark on another dragon related OSL project this time as a commission for someone. Basically he wants me to paint the Rackham dragon in a red/ black colourscheme. So, not wanting to loose a lot of the detail on this fabulous sculpt, I have been toying with the idea of going for a dragon lit by either a sunset or flames from the front. Basically I see the reddish tones being brightest on the wing membranes where light will shine through fading to black on the back. Any thoughts on how I should approach this?

OK, I\'m back. Teacher just had to slip down the hall to go wee wee.....now, where were we?

@vincegammer - Hope you can bear with me, this is where there can be some back and forth. The last two images look very washed out, colorwise compared to the ones above it. The shadow areas seem ALOT lighter. I\'ll withold much comment till I know if it\'s the photography or things have really changed, paint wise. The one previous to the last ones looked better.

It\'s good you lightened up the candle stick. There needs to be a greater range of gradiation though. The top is fine, the bottom needs to be darker - blend of course. The candle holder and the shadow below it are too dark. Lighten them up and use a warmer color.

Is he going to be on top of the rock or next to it?

@ kittykat - Prime the dragon a midtone grey and post a picture of it, with a neutral background. Try to get the lighting even so as to minimise any shadows.

I don\'t think I actually made any changes to the mini between shots. I may have actually put a couple more washes of black over the dark places but I’m pretty sure I didn’t change anything else. It’s really the difference between exposures in my camera resulting from changing the background to a less reflective one.

Anyhow, I’m running out of time on this so I’ve done some more. The following pics will answer your question about his relationship to the base as I have put him on the base and taken pictures from a couple of angles.
I brightened the candle and reduced the bright spots on his face. I realize I haven’t done any secondary lighting on the sword.
I’m going to see if I can rig some way of eliminating the actual shadow caused by the lights. You can see it vaguely behind him and to his right. The rest of the shadow is all paint.

@vincegammer - I\'d say you are getting close to calling it a day. The colors still seem a bit bleached and the blending could be smoother, but it still looks well. If OSL is something you like, I\'d say keep at it and you will only get better. Some will flinch at me saying this but what I did with the shadows is to Photoshop them away. If you cant do that, just position the lights more carefully.

Thanks for the tip. Will probably be next weekend at the earliest before you see any result from me as dragion has yet to arrive and I\'m away this weekend.

Cheers

Thank you Thank you!

Thanks Shawn for the class. My dwarf got me on to the next round of the competition over at wyrd-games.net and received the highest score among competitors. The comments I got there have convinced me not to shelve him just yet and to smooth out those transitions.
Thanks. Couldn\'t have done it without you.

Hey shawn...

I am going to be starting a dragon for a good student of mine tonight( i teach karate twice a week to an adult class...this guys animal name is Snow dragon..he holds it very dear to himself)...this guy has helped me out alot over the past year...and although as much as i\'d love to be able to pay him back with money...i cant afford it. So i will be paying him back with art. His birthday is in october...so i have a while..i will be sculpting mine as an oreantal dragon..i wll be using a wood elf dragon as basis and sculpt it (much like marmosets..hope you dont mind). Anyway i want the dragons tail to \"glow\" so when it gets to painting i will be getting in touch with you if thats alright..pm me and let me know please

I already did that! I sent you a large box filled with money. And to make sure it was taken care of properly, I wrote CASH all over it in big bright letters. Don\'t tell me it never arrived? I knew I should have used certified mail.:(

Hi Shawn,

Which grey woud you recommend for the base coat for my dragon? I have GW and Vallejo paints. So Codex grey or fortress grey are possibilities. I also have German grey..

Rust Oleum dark primer is good. At this early stage it isnt real crucial to have something exace. Just do something dark yet not black.

This is such a handy thread!
I\'ve had some ideas myself, one of them is a Tau pathfinder who lies sniping in the rubble of a destroyed city, everything is painted very dark but some things are lightened up (not in a very extreme way) by the lights of his gun, or a lamp lying on the ground.
Do you think this is possible to make and to make it look good?
If so, expect me to join the class in a few weeks, first i have to finish this school year, which is a bit more important than painting minis lol .
