Hi Shawn similar to what Hinton said I am going to move on from this one now.
Here he is classed as finished although not entirely perfect I have learned a lot from this and know I will find it easier on a new model now.
Thanks for enLIGHTening me and giving me some great insight to this awesome fun technique rest assured there will be plenty more lights coming from the demons lair.

WOW!!! That is FANTASTIC.....but now you owe me a new monitor - that sword burned a hole in it. You REALLY got a bright effect. You definately have a firm grasp of the tonal control. I know you are moving on but in parting with this one I\'d say for the next one try to include some color in the lit areas. Dont get me wrong, what you did really knocks me out. On the next go it the effect could be even more fantastic. Here\'s an example of what I mean -

http://www.coolminiornot.com/76971

In this one I kept the light white so there is no overall \'color\' to the light but as you can see there is color of the objects being lit. If the lightsource did have a color to it it would be a simple matter of slanting all the colors in that direction.......mmmm-k?

Once again - GREAT. Cant wait to see what you do next!

Oh yeah, I remember that now. Would have been fun to try. I saw about the contest a bit too late to make the deadline....oh well. I have a number of OSL\'s going at the moment.

Hi there, Shawn.
The other day I tried OSL for the first time and wasn\'t completely satisfied with the results. Any chance you could comment on what I should do to fix it?

You are on the right track from the pictures posted. It would be helpful to see a few pic\'s that are better lit.

I\'m assuming that the \'accordian\' part of the gun is the light source. Start by painting that pure white and highlight the TOP of the ridges with a VERY light blue.

Try that, shoot with more light and repost. Good to have you \'in the OSL school\'.:D That\'s a cool mini. What is it called?

OK, thanx for the tips. Will post some pics when my camera has finished charging. :)
When you say that I should paint it pure white, do you mean the whole \"accordion\" thing, including the crevasses between the ridges?
What\'s the model called? Uh... CSM-with-a-lascannon-and-an-overgrown-arm?
I found some lascannon bits in my box but the left hand was missing so I took the next best thing that I had. :p

Yes the whole thing. Especially the crevasses.

dunno if it\'s because it\'s 4am, but it all looks quite flat and thick-looking. Could be wrong - I\'m going nap-nap soon :D zzzzzzzzzzz

Good strong colors. Good placement of where the light falls. It would hit his chin, bottom of the nose and above the eye. I\'m doing a Necron now with a gun that has that similar \'accordian\' shape on it and those can be a bit of a trick. Not that it\'s hard but there are some things going on with the light that can affect the OSL effect. The blue you have is great. What I\'m doing on my piece is to take pure white and highlight the tops of the bumps on the accordian part. It\'s backwards to what it seems it should be but the crevices have a natural shadow to them and putting the white in there dosent eliminate the shadow.....so, put a good pure white on the tops of the bumps. Do that and re-post.

This applies to what your doing. I\'m still learning how to do some of this stuff and so things may change a bit as I go along. I\'ll try to be consistant but I\'m also learning how to communicate this stuff, which is a sometimes very difficult thing. With my own stuff I tend to go back and forth ALOT. More light, less light, more color, less color, warmer, cooler etc......

It SEEMS good but the mini is not lit well enough to tell much else. Try putting the light on the camera side of the mini so that the side towards the camera is better lit.

Dont mean to be pickey but OSL is a rather delicate thing and how it is lit when photographing can affect it GREATLY.

Hey, Shawn. It\'s been a while since anyone has posted, so I hope you don\'t mind me doing a bit of thread-o-mancy on this.

I\'m working on a mini and just wanted to get your opinion/ideas. That is, if you don\'t mind.

The light source is obviously (I hope) the lantern she\'s carrying.

(Yeah, my photography still needs work)

WOW! I thought this thread was dead and gone.....not that I wished it that way. Good to see there is still some interest in all things glowing! I have that same mini on a shelf next to my bed and every night think about \'lighting it up\'.

What you have so far is good....now go a bit further. The lamp looks real good. Don\'t change a thing for now on it. Since the lamp is so warm what you will want to do next is to take a transparent yellow with a TOUCH of white in it and paint the areas where the light will fall. This will be an intermediary step with some fine tuning to follow. There are some places on the mini where there is white. Not sure weather it\'s a reflection or what. Get rid of them. They don\'t need to go to black but whatever the color of the object is take that and paint over the white areas. Metallic paints can give OSL some trouble. Doing NMM works a lot better. Try those and repost.

Thanks for the help, Shawn.

Ok, I hit the light areas. The white areas are refelctions from the lights, so I tried to darken them without going overboard; not sure if the photos show it.

I know metallics can be difficult, but my NMM needs so much work right now.
