Kudo`s

I`m new to this so i apoligise if i do any thing stupid, but i had to join and comment after seeing this!
I reckon age/dirty up that cloak and you have a fantastic looking battle-hardened Chaos Warrior. Take it from someone who cant stop his paint jobs from looking brand new i`m very impressed!! As for basing may i suggest snow and ruins, it would explain the bead blasted armour.

Thanks for all the great feedback folks! I'm glad people are still intersted in this! I wrote down all the suggestions and will get crackin on them tomorrow night hopefully. Won't get any painting done tonight though. :(

TomasP, For starters, I used the paint un-diluted which really helps with the texture. When I do it on a 1/35 scale tank, I thin the paint just a little bit to keep it from getting any type of texture. If it gets too texture-ish, you can hit it very lightly with 1000 grit sand paper. That will get rid of the actual texture but it keeps the appearance of it. I started with (after the original painting/shading/highlighting that I wasn't happy with) a very dark gray and began lightly tapping randomly with a piece of the foam you get with figgies. I kept changing the shape of the piece I was using to keep things random. Once I had that done I almost freaked! It...looked....horrible! But that's okay, completely normal for it to look nasty at this point. After that I would just basically repeat the steps above with dark red/maroon---> Scarlet Red----> Scarlet Red/Bloody Red 50-50 mix-----> and a very few spots with Bloody Red. I hope that makes sense. If not, just let me know, and try harder :)

10Ball, I agree and that was originally the plan, but somehow during the making of said cloak, It managed to get shorter. I think it has to do with final placement. I originally though I could "hang" it from a lower point on the shoulders. Since I had a cloak that I thought looked good enough, I did'nt want to try to lengthen it or make a new one. :( Always next time though right?

Ghost, thanks for that little ego stroke! It's much appreciated. Never thought something of mine would cause someone to join a forum just to comment on it! As for the base, I had considered snow covered ruins an really like the idea. I just have no experience creating a snow base, and very little experience making things (like the bottom of his cloak) look wet. Muddy I can do, just not the color tone change in fabric from being wet.

And the dirty-ing up of the cloak will be the very last thing I do as it will be done with pigments. So no painting after that.

Thanks agin for all the feedback gang! See ya next time!

So I was thinking about the base tonight..... it looks to me like no matter where on the base I pust the figure, there is not gonna be enough room for any scenerey (walls, ruined doorway arches, pillars etc....). So, I got to thinking about incorporating a chaos or khorne symbol within the stone floor. Yay or nay? I don't wanna do some generic plain stone floor but I don't really have room for much anything else. With the cloak and the shield he takes up a good portion of the base and with the angle of the sword, I will have to put him somewhere near the "back" of the base to keep the sword from hanging off the front so much. I' ve never done really creative bases, or very many bases at all for that matter. I want it to "add" to the overall presentation, not overpower it, or diminish it.....Lol...now that I typed that, I realize that's pretty much the whole point...DUH! K, leavin that for funny-osity. It was to me anyways :)

Anywho....thoughts? ideas? kicks in the pants?

I think a plain stone/marble base with a symbol on it would look good. The Khorne symbol would be a good one i think.

I was lurking around this thread for awhile, and I'm amazed at how well this is coming out. Love the rusted armour, I do agree it might be a bit too much on the chestplate, but it looks great nonetheless. As for the base, I think Noddwyr has a good idea at just doing something simple like the marble....you don't want the base taking away from the sculpt and paint job. Khorne symbol or Chaos symbol, personally I like the Chaos symbol better, but that's just personal opinion.

Well here is the base...... still think it will be a little boring but we'll see. Done with blocks I had made up from one of the HirstArts molds.

This is the final position for the figgie I think. I did have him set back but it looked like there was way too much room in front so I moved him up some. I think the emblem in the floor will still be visible enough.

And lastly..... I have no idea what to do with the sword..... All this is is basecoated in a dark metallic with lighter metallic streaks lightly brushed on diagonally..... Any help in this area would be super groovy....

mattsterbenz has a really good article on shading metals with the GW washes....that might be a place to look for inspiration.

That base also looks great imo, can't wait to see how you finish it up!

I'm thinking that you shouldn't do too much with the blade. Maybe check out mattsterbenz's article and bring out the lines on the blade a bit more but if you do too much it won't be in keeping with everything else on the mini.

Looks fantastic armour - great job!

Hey armor! Love the base! I think it really looks nice. I agree with the others on the sword. Matt's technique rocks! The diagonal lines on the sword just aren't cutting it for me. If it's meant to be lighting, it's not working. If it's supposed to be the actual metal, then some blacksmith needs to be shot. ;)

Oh if you decide to go with a snow base, it's insanely easy. You can get snow effects, if you get GW's it's just mix with white (PVA) glue and put it on with a brush, lump it on in places to make drifts, brush to make a thin base of snow. For my Chaos dude, I got a little $10 Woodlande Scenics snow kit. It has the snow base (glue mixed with snow), a bag of snow flakes and a little shaker for dusting, and ice effects. It's really cool and makes doing stuff like that really easy.

Great job so far!

Thanks all! I'll go check out Matts stuff again. Might have to buy some paints/inks and whatnot but that's fine. I don't have a whole lot to pick from as it is. Regardless, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna strip the blade and start over. Like Kath said, I'm just not feeling it.....

EDIT: Just looked at Matt's technique and I'm wondering if there is a suitable color/wash to replace the Asurmen Blue with. I'm not sure if that blue tint or at least that much of a blue tint would work for my figgie.....Thoughts?

Armornv, I think you saw the tutorial in Matt's WIP thread, I think most of us meant his metal article...http://www.coolminiornot.com/articles/1744-true-metallics-with-citadel-washes. He doesn't use blue in there at all, and I think you'll like the look he finishes (silver with brown/black) with a lot better than the bright metals of the grey Knights he's got in his wip thread...cause you're right, the blue tinge would be WAY out of place for this model, I agree with you there.

Asurmen blue...grrr. Whoever decided that the *grey* knights need to be splashed with blue slurpees needs to be shot.

I support this, that article has changed the way that I paint metals.

Since you put it that way.... I guess I need to get up off my wallet long enough to buy some paints and such.
Anywho, here is the stonework for the base as it looks right now. I was going for more of a brick shade of red, but my paint mixing fu caused it to be a little rust/orange-ish...Looks ok in the pic but to me looks more orange than that in person. Still a ways to go with it. More shading, highlights, touch ups. Tonal change for a couple of the stones and some filters/glazes to tie everything back together.
Here be da pik:

Thanks for lookin in! Comments and crits welcome of course.

You don't necessarilly need to buy the washes. You can water down paints of similar colors to glaze consistency and get similar results.

True, but it never hurts to stuff like that pre- mixed.Instead of finding empty paint pots, buying more distilled water(my water is too mineral-e for thinning and rinsing), and then using up a portion of paint only to have to buy another new bottle anyways. I'd just rather cut pit the extra work cost and get a bottle or two to keep around. Plus, I have no idea what color Devlan Mud is :) :)
