Thanks folks! I will hopefully get a little more done tonight and maybe get some paint ordered so I can get the figgie done!

Lol, glad you are going to try the washes, they're pretty cool. Devlan mud is kind of a darker brown tone, gryphonne sepia is a lighter sepia brown tone. That base is going to be great, it's got a good start, can't wait to see how you finish up the stones.

Thanks Aureo. Just submitted my order for paint. Wasn't feeling very adventurous so I only bought what I need right now as opposed to splurging on stuff I may never use lol.

Thanks Stew!

Well, the good news is the paint I ordered showed up today. The bad news, however, is that I SUCK at painting!! lol It started out really well. I was completely shocked at how nice (and easy) my transitions were coming out. I guess it could look worse than this.....maybe.....probably not much though :)
I took these with less light to keep the camera from being blinded by the reflections so apologies. You may look at these and think I suck at taking pics too!
So here ya go, the sword, as it is right now, only did the one side just in case....... Will it be scrap'it n start over...again? or... a sigh of relief and a continue on good sir!? The more I look at it, the more I think the first respnse is correct :)

P.S. Matt...if your reading this, I apologize for butchering a(your) really good technique. :( lol

Judging by the overwhelming response to those last pics :) I'll be stripping the blade and trying again. *sigh* I have also been "practicing" my blending on some spare minis(that I have also stripped a couple times :) ) and something I've noticed is that I seem to be getting better results from GW paint than I do with the Vallejo. See, I've only used vallejo for airbrushing. Never used it for brush painting until I started back with the minis. So that might be part of problem.
I think the problem with the sword is that I simply don't know where to put the shadows and highlights. I tried putting them where they were when I put it under a light but it still looks wierd. The diagonal shadow line on the "face" of the blade I just added because under the light, the face of the blade was just plain...no shadows or bright spots. I guess I'm just not very good at "seeing" where the light should fall in my mind's eye.
Anyways, long story short, I'm going to start working my way back into GW paint, also gonna drop a few bucks on a couple of "real" brushes. I think I understand the how and why. I just need to work on the application of it.

Might start an actual wip thread around this weekend if I have anything to start showing.

I thought you were sort of on the right track, although I did think going diagonal was a bit odd. Personally I would recommend looking at the NMM miniature mentor tutorial from their advanced tutorial set. Change the colours used in the vid and you'll be alright.

Hey m'dear! I only now got the chance to catch up with this. I didn't see it before. The sword is just fine except you went too dark with your shading too fast (I'm no expert in Matt's technique but that's exactly what happened to me.)

Since your shading went so dark, you might have to strip it and start over. I don't think the dark stuff will allow your highlights to really shine.

Use only the darkest shading in very specific areas, extremely thin and exact. But before you do the dark stuff, try washes of blue, purple and and green-blue mix. Then bump up the highlights, that will help a lot too. After that do your shading washes, very, very carefully.

Sorry I'm late to the party!

Thanks Tomas and Kath. I have stripped the blade again but that's as far as I have gotten. Been busy assembling some Empire Halberdiers from the batallion box for my uh.....experiment.... Ok no real experiment, just got a line of em I'm gonna paint one at a time to try and figure things out. (pun very much intended) :)

I think that's a great idea - something I've tried in the past and I'm just about to try again (I'm awaiting delivery of a krieg squad, and I'm hoping the last one'll be alright). Make sure you post the empire dudes in your WIP

I hope so. I think it will be as long as I pay to attention to every stroke I make and try to soak in what's happening on the surface. I also found a little collectible store about 20 minutes away. Not a huge selection of stuff but they had 1 or 2 unit boxed sets from most of the armies as well as some 40k boxes. Plus, they had a paint rack! Woohoo! Now, where is the Fed-Ex guy with my brushes!?!?

Long time no...anything....

Hello there folks! I'm baaaaack! Sorta.... A little over a year later, and I'm finally calling this one done. As done as I'm going to make it at least. Couple of spots on the base I need to touch up due to some over zealous apllications of epoxy that seeped up. Not a lot different than what was shown last go round, just all put together now.... I'd like to say I've been painting away and sculpting, and building and... but no. Haven't really done squat since I was here last. I have spent the last couple of days peeking around and looking on the site tho.... As I would have expected.... nothing but incredible-ness all over the place. So, on to the pics. Sorry for the crappy quality. My camera has been in hiding for a year...(and so have my lack of skill apparently).

Thanks for looking in... if you did. If not, then you literally don't know what your missing, or that I typed that.

Thanks! Oh, and here's a little teaser for my next figgie sculpt. :)

Yes, I know that was mean. But really, that's as far as I have gotten with it. Not sure how big, what subject. I have a few ideas I'd like to try but. I just haven't settled on THE one. Open to opinion even though I may not follow them...

Ha! If your looking for a derpa derp I wear a helmet type dragon head.... who am I kidding. I couldn't even pull that off. I'm kinda wanting to do a dual wielding, leather wearing assassin type guy.... I would like to do a dragon of some sort one of these days, but that's a loooong way off for me.

Thanks moon! I'm pretty pleased with it as a first effort. Hopefully my second will be even better!

Lots more sculpting going on around here lately, or so it seems to me. I really like that and I thoroughly enjoyed this WIP thread when you were posting up way back when...so I'm happy to see you back and starting a new project.

That's a lot of clay! Better get started quick, before it spoils!

Ok, maybe it won't spoil but you could get at it all the same. ")

Thanks guys! Good to be back. Looking forward to getting some stuff done. Not sure if I will, but I'm looking forward to it anyways. I've got the armature soldered together and posed how I think I want it. I'll prolly start a separate WIP just so I don't confuse people with the title of this one, or maybe just keep everything here? Not sure what the protocol is for that. :)
