Progress has been made, albeit slowly. He is still quite red, but I feel it has calmed down a little with just the addition of some other colors on it. Fully expected. The real change in hue will come once the weathering starts. Pay no attention to to the smears hear and there. One that I definately need to work on as a painter is being neat. Coloring inside the lines so to speak. Fear not, all will be well before I get to the fuin stuff. I am quite pleased with the way the shield is turning out, but that's just me. :) One thing I haven't reached a decision on is the cloak color(it's still in primer)..... Basic brown leather both sides? Black inside, dark red outside? Black both sides? Freehand/designs on the back? and or inside edge?
I really have no idea...
Only one quick pic:

As alway, comments and crits welcomed!

Freehand trim on the inside edges of the cloak will help frame the mini. But he is looking quite good. You should get him finished and ride up to Gamesday and throw him in Open, or Large Scale. ;)

Thanks Chad. I'll have to see what hits me as I get closer to painting the cloak. As for a GD comp.....as much as I'd like to go to one someday(never been to one), I highly doubt I'd bring anything with me. My current abilities are laughable at best IMO. I know, I know. Not saying it to discourage myself or anything. Just saying that I need a lot of practice. I can't imagine how impressive some of those minis would be in person. Pictures of them amaze me enough as it is. It would most likely break my spirit for good lol!

I felt the same way when I entered my first one, and got crushed! But I kept going after it. If you do come, you should bring it, you never know. I think it could do something, in the right category. Were you planning on coming to Chicago?

Wasn't planning on coming this year. Not even sure if Chicago would be the closest one to me, or if they have them elsewhere in the states? I relatively familiar with model competitions. Did pretty well at the last few armor shows I went to which even that has been 5 or 6 years, but GD is different animal all together from what I can tell. I would very much like to get to one someday. Time, money, and transportation are all working against me lol, at least right now anyways:(

I understand completely. As it is now there is only one GD in North America, this year it is in Chicago. Next year it may be elsewhere, but I am unsure.

Ah. I think Chicago is around 8-9 ish hours from here. Last time I drove there. Looooooong time ago. in 1994. Maybe one day I'll be able to get to one and at least see this stuff in person, but I'll have to stick with pics on the interwebz for now.

Looking good armor! I like the gold! You paint in a different order than I do but I think you should go ahead and finish the highlights and shadows on the armor first then do the gold trim. You don't want to mess up that pretty gold with shading and whatnot. But that's just me. ;)

And yeah, I'm wishing they still had a GD in Atlanta. That one I could probably go to. Keeping my fingers crossed they'll announce Houston. That would totally rock!

Thanks Kath!
I actually did put some more shadows on it.... the camera is still washing them out. Plus, they're probably still not dark enough. :( I can't seem to force myself to go any darker. What I'm putting on as shadow color looks sooo much darker than the base already. I guess I need to get over that lol...... Normally Kath I would do the trim last, but I felt I was as far as I was gonna get with the shading. I guess because I'm just more used to painting tanks instead of figgies :) I will still be able to add a little more shading and highlight with washes and filters. I might even try to (carefully) add some more before the coat of Future.

Yes, larger figures are a big adjustment both visually and to the instincts. Remember, transitions are your key here so if you don't want to go darker, improve your transitions. Instead of mixing a base, shade, and highlight, mix a base, first shade, second shade, etc and first hightlight, second highlight, third and so on. It's not so much a change of color (but that helps if you can include it without throwing the kitchen sink at it) but the change in tint. More subtle changes give you a greater range of transition. Make sense?

It absolutely makes sense. It actually jogged my memory for something I read I think on PlanetFigure that a lot of the "larger scale" painters sometimes use 3 or more shade colors and highlight colors just because of the surface area. Another problem I have is simply the fact that when I did last paint minis, I didn't do very much shading or highlighting, so I simply am not very good at it lol! That of course, will (hopefully) improve with time. Thanks for the tips. Won't get much painting done today, got a 5 yr old nephew running rampant through the house :)

Thanks Stew! Really appreciate it!
So Sunday, I got the brushes out to start working some shadows for the red. After seeing a thread on a red Bloodcrusher in the painting forum from War0827, I realized that my red was quite simply put...too flat and plain. I think it looks absolutely horrible.... Once I get some highlights and do the leg I started, I might sow some pics before I strip it and start over....MIGHT. If I do show some pics, I plan on leaving one leg untouched to show how much of a change there is. As he is right, the armor is overall very dark, which I'm kinda ok with. If I can get the highlights on and looking halfway decent, it might keep me from stripping it. I just had some issues of the color becoming sort of mottled is the best way I can describe it. Not the finish or texture, just the color.
Anyways, more work to be done before I take any more pics of it and maybe I'm being too critical of myself. Shading this much is completely new to me. My old way of mini painting was quite basic in comparison.

Till next time!

Hey, that's looking really nice. I'm looking forward to the weathering mate.

If so, I'll do it under loud cries of consternation, accompanied by wild gesticulation. :D

rofl, also good. In terms of noises produced, the two are more or less similar. Only that one of two is usually done from a seated position and comes across as less threatening due to reduced mobility from ankled trousers. That does not mean, however, that it comes across as less disturbing...:D
