Zombie Miniature Painting Question from a Non-painter

You know I am clumsy, so I use vise grips to hold the mini. Also i use an old mattress box in which to swing my minis. It keeps the varnish out of the yard and if the mini launches, it is easier to find. When I was finished, I'd set them in in cardboard trays in the guest bathroom with a small fan and the exhaust fan running to speed the curing process along. (not sure it helped, but I felt I was doing something.)

Well.... I sat down and painted some of my youngest's plastic skeleton knights. They're 54mm and way easier to do. I've taken pre-dip photos and will post both sets when I'm done.

Oh.... I also dipped 2 in Satin miniwax dip and the other in gloss to see the difference.

Also, when I dipped them.... they looked really...really dark. Is that normal? I guess I'll see when they're dry.

What would happend if you used black dip? Would it be too dark.

Also, I only need to dip them once, correct? I mean I don't need to redip them again after they dry, right?

Yes, they should only be dipped once.

Did you shake/swing off the excess?

And, black will be darker than brown, but this, as I understand it, is why you need to shake/swing off the excess - so they're not too dark.

It could be worse - it could be KZ's painting that looks better than anything you've ever done!

hehe.

:giggle:

That would be surprising. I was at a small con vending and my son came along to hang out. There he had a 1-on-1 painting tutorial. So I think he knows more than me.

I can't wait to see those pictures!

One note: The brown/black dip debate really depends on what you are doing. I like to use browns for anything living, since the brown dips seem to feel like a more natural shading to me.

It just freaked me out how it shaded over the colors. It makes me want to use brighter colors.

I may have to get a container of Black polyminiwax and try that with some zombies waiting to be painted.

On a side note...I totally want to handle the figures I painted. But I know it's too soon. Perhaps Thursday...........afternoon. A treat to myself. Or Friday morning.

Yeah, one of the keys of dipping with Minwax is to use "almost too bright" colors, since the dip will darken it all up. Again though, this then boils down to preference, so doing a few different styles and picking the best look for you is a good idea.

Hi Scorpion0x17, thanx for the tip regarding fire. Next time I will try your tip out when I have to paint flames ;-(((

You can now rest easy in the knowledge that even the pro's get it wrong sometimes:

So...here are the pre-dipped skeletons I painted. (Sorry for the small pic). Upon reflection, I realized I probably didn't need to prime and paint them yellow as they are made with yellow plastic. I will try some dipped w/only the accents painted up.

Here's a 1:32 Airfix SAS guy my son finished painting. It was partially done by someone else and he finished it up.

This one is really dark, but it's a left over resin defect from when I was trying to make my minis in resin/plastic before going with pewter that my son pained.

Lastly, 2 zombies my son painted. He really got into "blood spatter". Although it looks like they were showered in blood...he likes'm.

Tomorrow, I take the pictures of the dipped figures and post them.

First....I'm not sure how big these pictures are going to be. Sorry if they're HUGE.
2nd...theses are post dip, pre- matte gloss spray.

These Skeletons here are the ones I painted. I'm going to try some more, but this time I won't paint the majority of them because they are made in yellow plastic and I think that the brown wash will have a similar effect. We'll see later this weekend.View attachment 13546

OH.... I matted them earlier before posting and they look way cool.

ALso, the first two figures I painted (archer & spear guy), I used the "satin" finish of polywax and it definitely was less glossy. I don't know if that'll make much of a difference since I sprayed them with a matte finish.

Hmmm,

do not get it as an attack, but if this is the result from dipping, I think I will not dip my minatures.....

I just bought all three Armypainter Dips. I think I will use them as wash.

The results are not to convincing me. Are they dry already? Is this always the result?

Hi Markus!
Wait until you see what they look like with the matte finish. WOW. They look 10x better. Really.... maybe I'll go get those pictures right now.
