Reasonable Criticism

On \'crap,\' maybe we can distinguish between the actual phrase \"that\'s crap\" and the comments which may or may not accompany it. On it\'s own, I certainly don\'t see anything constructive to the comment, but I can certainly see the possibility that it could be followed by insightful criticism.

Speaking of Boobies and Booby obsessions, where is Supervike?

Treide, you are painting my own miniature collection, LOL, I think I have almost all of those pieces. Admit it, you drove up here and stole off with my old favorites!

@brimshack - But of course! Why bother trying to track down old minis on ebay when I can just swipe them from you? Once I clean you out, I am going after mattsterbenz\'s and Onislair\'s minis, since they are also in the neighborhood.

You must have been looking at my gallery.
Actually, I bet you got that one yourself.

@vincegamer - Well, I have had people tell me that painting old minis is a lost cause, but what the heck - I still like them!

As I recall, that particular comment was made on one of Jenova\'s minis, but I don\'t remember which one.

@Treid. I know I posted once that I didn\'t think the score on a couple of peices would go any higher, but That was my reflection on the masses. I do actually enjoy seeing old mini\'s, not sure if the masses feel the same

Its all really quite simple...

If I tell someone they suck this is not only reasonable, but downright insightful criticism.

If someone tells me I suck, this is stupid, meaningless and vapid commentary and the worst kind of personal attack and grounds for a non-negotiable, lifetime banishment.

See? It\'s not all that complicated. :D

I try to tailor the comment to the painter. Some need encouragement, some need criticism, some need their hineys spanked. As Mick says, if you try sometimes, you get what you need.

@hubbabubba - I don\'t think the \"lost cause\" comment stemmed from our prior discussions. You and several others rightly have pointed out that old minis tend to be scored lower. Certainly some of that is related to many older sculpts having limited detail, and adynamic posing, but there are definitely some old gems as well.

Even the ugly old minis are probably worth posting if for no other reason to show people that are new to the hobby some of the history of minis. For example, I am currently painting an old (1979) Elan Merch mini from the original animated Lord of the Rings movie. I hesitate to even post him on CMON, because he is going to be slammed. On the other hand, I suspect a fair number of people on the site like you would get a kick out of seeing such an old mini.

This actually gets back to the initial thread topic - I admit I have hesitated about posting some minis because I don\'t relish snide comments or disheartening scores. To benefit from what this site has to offer, it really does help to have a thick skin, and harsh criticisms may actually discourage those new to the hobby when they might otherwise flourish with a helpful comment.

When I was brand new to the hobby, I was pretty proud of the pieces I was putting out. My only point of refrence was what my hubby was painting. One day I found CMoN, and after perusing the site for a few days, I went back to look at the ones I had painted. My first thought? \"these are crap!\" They all bathed in acetone that night. I\'ve repainted several, but as yet have not posted anything. I think that for the most part, though, I would benefit most from putting a WIP thread. I read those and there\'s lots of helpful stuff there. I\'ve learned a lot from this site.

Heh, I know the feeling. Several years ago, I sort of capped off my average time on a mini at around 3 hours. I really just didn\'t want to spend more time than that on any given piece. And I was happy with thre results, I really was. Then I surfed this and related sites for a couple years while not painting at all. Now my standards have raised, but not my skills. I\'m not bathing any minis in acetone, but I would like the ones I do from here out to be better.

Its all about the personality really. Most people who paint int the high 8\'s arent going to benifit from use low borne telling them thier mini is crap and most people who score in the 3\'s wont benifit either.

But every one knows what polite is and if you wouldnt talk to your mother like that then dont say it to someone on CMON. A few of the regulars can take a bit of ribbing and people like me that are built like a rhino (Yep as well as thick skin Ive got the low to the ground walk and extended belly) dont really care about bad stuff.

btw Spazzy would love to see some of you and your hubbies work so post away in the wip section.

Id have to agree that posting in the forums will get you better comments tho as there are quite a few regulars (me included) who just love telling people what to do.

sorry to drag this back, but.....

I was looking at minis today and came across

This.

I was going to leave the comment \"Is that painted?\", but then I though it might be too harsh. What do you think? ???

i have seen some unpainted/unconverted minis recently on here, with for sale in the text box with an ebay link on.

That would be harsh. It is clearly painted, alas the scanner\'s harsh light didn\'t have the range to pick up the subtle colour variations. I imagine that in a better photo, this mini would look quite good. Scanning is jut not the way to go, unless you have bright cartoon colours it will terribly disservice your mini.

Much better Pic

With that first one it just looked like he painted the eyes red and left the rest unpainted. Thank you for posting link to better pic, I\'m glad I didn\'t leave my comment now.
