Insane bill in Georgia

Darth, the big trouble I see with the Libertarians is that they want to work from the top down. They need to be working from the bottom up. Grass roots movement stuff.

I would really like to hear a politician retire and brag about how many useless laws that he got repealed instead of passed.

See? That\'s SO much more entertaining.:D

Here, the head of the legislature (democrat) holds behind-closed-doors meetings with the governor (republican). They work out a compromise based (I assume) on which lobbyist has ponied up the most $$$. They then go back to the other members of their party and tell them how to vote. Once the bill is assured passage, a few vocal dissents are allowed on each side, just to keep up appearances. Anyone not following along is, um, expunged

A post in a million...

Finn actually goes back to topic:bouncy:

This has become a major issue over here too, but I think some idiot over there has managed to fudge things.

There are large nimbers of young females in this country who are kidnapped by members of their own family, or duped into going on \'holidays\' abroad and are subsequently mutilated in the name of culture. As a man the idea of penile circumcision makes me wince but what happens to these poor females is a million times worse/more dangerous.

Any sensible government would outlaw this practice, but it sounds like some t*t in the American legislature has confused mutilation with cosmetic piercing.. There is a bit of a difference, it\'s like confusing branding/flaying with tattooing:D

I whole-heartedly agree with you Finn.
Female \"circumsision\" is a barbaric practice and (and you will almost NEVER hear me use this phrase) there should be a law against it!

The absurdity is that some group of jackasses either doesn\'t know the difference or sees this as a great opportunity to outlaw something harmless that they personally object to. Another shining example of one of the three great lies of our times:

1) The check is in the mail.

2) I promise I won\'t c*@ in you.

3) I\'m from the governmenet and I\'m here to help you

Which translates as:
I\'m from the Government, and I\'m here to screw you:flip::D

Which would then mean it would be rapidly followed up by #2 from Dauber\'s list...... lol

I would tend to agree with you there; however, there is a shift within the party to do just that. So maybe towards the end of my lifetime something will actually come out of it. :)

We actually had a Libertarian candidate as a write-in for mayor in my hometown who came in second in our most recent election...not bad considering he pretty much didn\'t campaign and still beat 4 of the other 5 candidates. ;)

on thread also

And, if I remember correctly, a majority of these female circumcisions are done when the girls are very young.

It is horribly barbaric, and should be condemned and illegal.

Unfortunately, when there are bills like this, some opportunistic congressperson will see to it get something almost ridiculous added, thereby nullifying the entire bill.

So instead of focusing on the important part of this bill, Congress has to now address this goofy part. And the media (who always seems to get the blame!!) does their part by spotlighting the one bad section so us constituents get all up in arms and kill the bill.

Then the whole process will start over again.

No wonder many voters get so disenchanted with the entire arena....

That could have been the premise behind it except that the bill already passed unanimously in the House, and the only \'media\' coverage is a few small blurbs here and there, nothing most people pay attention to. The only way I found out about the thing is my roommate is big into piercings and he found it on a piercing site. I don\'t think they are trying to pull attention, no, they have vested interest in whether or not the bill passes. If it does, part of thier buisness goes down the drain. This isn\'t a case of some nebulous media looking to sink its teeth into story, this is people who this bill would affect getting pissed off. :flip::bouncy:

Crazy.

He\'ll have a (in most public cases) non-visible, relatively non-invasive, totally elective adult procedure punished as severely as child molestation is in some places.

Well, I guess it\'s time to attack tattoos, creative auto detailing, rock music, video games, etc..... Oh! Wait! Many states and cities already are! :wow:

I guess the next thing I\'ll hear is that the government is trying to turn even more into a giant high school and I\'ll go to jail for coloring my hair purple. lol ???

\"Your papers please?\" - be careful, there are cases (at least one on Kuro5hin.org) where internet users have been visited by the Serious Men In Suits for making even generic, hypothetical \"violent\" comments. In the Kuro5hin case, the user made a general statement along the lines of \"If I had anthrax and wanted to kill Dick Cheney, this is what I\'d do\". The FBI showed up at his workplace to interview him and he narrowly avoided being fired.

Female genital mutilation is a terrible thing but it would have been SO easy to word this bill so it didn\'t criminalize consensual adult piercings as well. The last thing this world needs is another consensual, victimless \"crime\".

\"Screw Bush!! Whooooo!!! Why, if I could get into the White House with a rubber chicken and some jello, I\'d.......\"
*sirens*
\"Shit, it\'s the feds!! Go anarchy!! Long live rubber chickens!! You can imprison me, but you can\'t imprison my mind!!\"

Anyways.......

I think laws like this are bullshit...If it\'s something consensual, as people have said, and has no dire consequences for you or for others (the opposite), what the hell is the problem? Is impropriety that\'s the concern? It\'s just those stuffy right-wing religious folks who are immediately predjudiced against anything that goes against their views of what\'s hot and what\'s not......Of course, my family comes from a long line of upright Orange folks, but hey, it\'s not that big of a loss to be disowned....

You know, even the concept behind this law is bloody small minded interfierence in someone elses life. Do I think that the practice of clitorectimy is barbaric? Yes. Should it be stopped? Well, that is a question that goes deeper than most of the PC police want to go. If all cultures have value, then all cultural practices have value to that culture, and we as an outside influence should not try to change them. If on the other hand we want to hold everyone to the same standards, then we have to set out on a plan of world conquest - cause there are cultures out there that will have to be drug kicking and screaming into the 21st century - including the paternalistic Sons of Bitches in the Georgia Legislature. Either we start recognizing the basic human right to non interfierence - IE I dont have the right to interfere with your choices in life or we just suck it up and let a bunch of small minded individuals set the rules for the rest of us.

Rant off.:D

Steelcult..you are da man!

I agree with you 110%.

There is a need for legislation however, because young girls are being hideously mutilated without their consent.

Personally I would be a much happier bunny if people who \'moved to Rome\' tried in the smallest extent to fit in with the \'Romans\'. As a significant number of immigrants don\'t appear to share this view however, unfortunately we have to legislate against their unhelpful and ungrateful behaviour.

Your idiot in Georgia however, is a different kettle of fish. Sounds like someone ought to kidnap him and perform an idiotectomy:D
