I'm getting too old for this :)

Ok so this is my first ever post. I want to say initially that the standard of work on this site is phenominal. I have been lurking for a few years now avidly watching the work of wargamer43210 and cassar (Truescale Wolves and Jester blew me away) as well as many others. I will say for someone who thought he was a pretty good painter before I came to this site you have all shattered my confidence so thanks for that :)

As I said been on here a while and had a few ideas about what I would like to have a bash at first. I have an old school grey knight that I have been playing around with and also I was thinking about some home made Battlemechs, but I stupidly went in to Games Workshop today to have my usual moan about how it was all so much cheaper when I was young.

Long story short I walked out with a Wood Elf minature that blew me away, it's the nicest miniature I've ever seen so it seems fitting it should be the first one I make an arse off infront of you all.

I will try to keep regular updates on this and if anyone has any advice (apart from give up) please feel free to help me out.

Thanks in advance :)

Welcome! That wood elf happens to be one of my favorite sculpts too! So I can't wait to see how you paint him. Good luck with it!

Welcome and good luck - that's a lovely mini :)

I'm pretty new here myself - and am planning to start a WIP thread as soon as I get my painting area sorted out (painting on the same desk I do my computing is a really bad idea :( )

Agree w. everyone else: good model choice. The only Wood Elf I've ever felt inclined to paint. :) How is the finecast? Any air bubbles, problems, etc.?

The finecast is strange, I think I like it better but I'm not sure. It took longer to prep the mini for painting and the paint feels as if it goes on differently. Never painted a resin figure before so not sure.

I need some advice folks, I only have a limited GW paint selection and no money to expand them. I wanted to try a different colour scheme from the picture but I don't have that many options.
Also I have seen a few of the NMM tutorial threads that I like the sound of but I am really loath to try it on this mini. Also I need a few pointers for basing the mini. I was thinking of a swamp like base. Sort of like the planet Luke meets Yoda on in Starwars, any ideas the best way to go about this?

I would like to see him standing on a rock surrounded by swamp and with some kind of creature poking his head out of the water coming from the direction he is pointing his sword and looking in. Maybe another creature climbing up said rock behind him - snnn--ea--kkking! Golum type creatures you know what I'm getting at. Might require a little conversion/scratch sculpting though...

Well welcome to this site, one thing to remember is not to listen to much to Cassar, or atleast that is what I have deducted from reading a lot of post on the forum :) (refering to the last part of his post)

More serious matter, when it comes to colour for the armour, there is two ways to go, either NMM or true metals, you should decide on one thecnique that you want to use and after that look for advice. Remember to not paint directly out of the bottle, try one part water one part paint and use more layers.

In regards to pictures for you to choose the way to go with your metal choices stucy this two link and think what you like the best.

I know there should be some more good ones out there for NMM, but well someone else will hopefully point you to one of them.

Ok so I have been working a lot over the last week or so, but I've managed to make a half decent start for my standard of painting. Now I want to say again I am not even close to where some of the painters on here are but im starting to get the taste for painting again after a good while out. I would say I am about 50 % done on this guy. The main issues I see from here are with basing him and getting tidier on some of the areas (also concerned about joining the sword on).
I am working with a really limited selection of paints (12 colours and 3 washes) so in terms of colour scheme it has tied my hands but i've tried to work on certain things in the mini that I have not really done before. Feeling a bit out of my comfort zone :)

So the elf has stalled due to lack of insperation on the base plus I've been reading alot of the guides and trying a few different things out. Saw JesterzUSMC First founding thread and got flashbacks to the old school beaky marines I used to have about twenty years ago. Found this fella in a drawer of minis and set to work, now I usually paint Ultramarines but I am reading the Horus Heresy books just now (A Thousand Sons) so I went for Space Wolves.

I already feel like my painting is coming along, I just need to be more patient.
