Golden Demon/Games Day North America (Chicago 2011) aftermath

Considering how awful the cases were until you got to the first cut models, only to find the lighting was crap in those cases. Seems like they're putting less into what should really be the most important part of Gamesday amirite? :p
Good point. I'm afraid people are going to have to wait til they (GW) put up their official pics. Anything else is going to be sub-par.

Quoted for truth.

And Beamo is absolutely correct, but the lighting would have been way worse in the main hall. And I am glad we were separated. Could you imagine the headache from all the WAAAUUUUGHHHH? I was only in the main hall for maybe an hour all day, and ended up with a headache.

I'm suffering a bit of PTSD from all that. Waking up in the middle of the night thinking the Orks are coming...

I agree, the lighting was terrible and the cases to display all the mini's had scratches all over them. The only good cases were the ones that they put the first cuts' and finalists' in. But then the light was a huge problem. I took only a few and even fewer came out decent enough to post. Enjoy and sorry for some blurry pics, I'm short and the finalist were on the top shelves of the cabinet so I was on my tip toes lol :) If I remember correct, the Ork biker got the slayer.

God, this is really sooo annoying... On every GD there are thousands of people taking Millions of Pictures all the time everywhere, but they never seem to end Up on the Internet somehow... Grgr... We should work on a Live Stream in Future, hehe... Or pay someone to post Pics...

Matt, I am really sorry, I usually try to take as many as I can. THis time it was bad beyond believe. See, problem was not only poor light, but also it was poor yellow light. I tried to take pictures without flash but it simply didn't work and with a flash... that sucked even more because glass cabinets are highly reflective, so the flush literally bleeds over the picture. Sorry again. I tried; may be I just didn't know what I was doing but so far I yet to see any good pictures from 2-3 people who were taking them.

love the orc biker and those grey knights.

Who did those grey knights? I want to find out what wings they put onto that terminator...

the Grey Knights were Jim Wappel's. The second pic down was Vince Hudon's slayer sword winning bike. I can't remember who painted the Snikrot, but that took 3rd in 40k large. 4th picture down was my Knight Titan conversion that won gold in 40k large. The necrons were done by Mark Maxey and they placed in 40k squad but I forget which trophy they got. The 6th picture down was Jeffrey Bowden's Sanguinor which took bronze in 40k Single. The 7th picture down is Todd Swanson's Nurgle marine "Grulgor" which took gold in 40k single. The next picture down is Mark Bedford's Contemptor Dread which took bronze in Open Category. I'm trying for the life of me to remember who painted the steel legion commander, which I believe took gold in Open. If that was the case it would have been Chris Borer's but I could be wrong.

The steel legion guy was done by Chris Borer, and I'm pretty sure I read it was a Master of Ordnance. I'm pretty sure it was part of the Heroes of Armageddon project.

Yes the Master of Ordnance was done by Chris Borer and it was part of the massive Steel Legion Army for the 'Heroes of Armageddon' project. Gorgeous model.

I didn't realize that I didn't even get a shot of my own model :( It was right behind Drescher's in 40K Large. Most of my other photos came out kind of crappy unfortunately. Hopefully some other people can post up more pics.

none of my pictures turned out good enough to post.

I think that the necrons were 3rd

someone is getting a sweet model "Master of ordnance" by Chris Borer and it just got upgraded with a gold trophy

Congrats to everyone there was some very nice stuff there.

i tried to shoot some pics, but they were too dark and blurry. i had a great time meeting fellow painters for the first time. hanging out at the lounge was a blast. there were some really nice entries this year. i didn't mind my dread taking third behind the sword winner and beamo's sweet wolf dread. i agree that the lighting was awful. it made me want to take a nap.

That was a tough category. A lot more than our 3 entries deserved trophies. With such a heavily stacked category, I felt really honored.

All we needed was a big screen TV in there running a Bob Ross marathon, and it would have been a slumber party.

Wow what a trip!

I just came back from 2 hours of flight + 5 hours of driving so excuse the typoes. It was a great event and a pleasure to meet up with the painters of the North-American scene
I have had the privilege to have met in the past, deplore the abscence of many others who couldn't make it, as well as meet and chat with new faces to the scene and behold what the new blood brings to the table (GD veterans better watch out!). The display "sneeze guards" are really badly scratched and are due for replacement, but when the finalist went in the cases I did my best to take pictures. Like the others, I had very limited success, but here are a few of them that may be worth your look to get an idea of the neat stuff. These did not all receive trophies and I wish I had more decent pictures as many other entries deserved to be seen. I dare not try and identify them all, I'll leave that to those who unlike me do not have the memory and attention span of a moth near a flickering spotlight.

Chris Borer had a stunning full sculpt of an imperial officer which he painted with remarkable finess. I await with a healthy mix of dreadful terror and amazement his next piece.

Talking to the judges afterwards, they explained to me that in the end the Slayer Sword race came down to Todd Swanson's 's Nurgle Lord Grulgor, Drew Drescher's original conversion of a Adeptus Mechanicus Knight Paladin and my "terrifying" Speed Squig (which came attached to his pet warboss on a bike). Speaking of the biker's freehand jacket you can't really see, I was told that it is precisely that which tipped the scale ever so slightly in my favor, seeing that I had made the effort to paint fancy freehand for NOBODY to see :p.

I still can't believe the slayer sword went to my Warboss (who took it home to da boys to bash skulls with) when standing next to such refined pieces. Todd your Nurgle Lord was a marvel of detail, those scuplted nurglings and maggots were insane!

Here are a few pics taken before I jumped in the car to catch the plane. Unfortunately under the GD hall lights no one would notice the little details I placed, from the freehand jacket, the broken headlight, the "Waagh button" on the powerklaw energy pack, the fact that the warboss had no way to brake the bike as the only functionning brake is on the powerklaw's side, and that splattered bug in his teeth due to his "magnetic" smile;

Congrats to all the finalists and winners, and thanks for the interesting discussions I had with those nice enough to spent a few minutes chatting with a raving lunatic!

Congrats on the slayer sword...you're piece was just jaw dropping. I didn't even notice the bug in the teeth lol. must be cause of the bad lighting we had.

BTW, the commissar yarrick in the 4th pic down was also part of th 'Heroes of Armageddon' project. That was also a stunning looking piece. I was able to hold it in my hands and place him in front of Ghazghkull Thraka on the table. Took pics of him also. Here is a front, back, and face off of the models on the 'Heroes' table. Ghazghkull Thraka was painted up by Mathieu Fontaine.

It was great to meet you in person, Vince.

I love looking at that model; I find new things about it every time!

I'm looking forward to seeing next year's entries start coming together. :)

Armies on Parade trophy

Hi there guys! Sorry it has been forever since I last posted. This whole year has been really insane.

The month leading up to Games Day was very rough, as I had to paint tons of GenCon minis, while day after day my GD entries languished on the table. I ended up with 4 half finished entries left at home.

I also invested a lot of time in getting the Temple of Blood ready for Armies on Parade, which took many more hours. That was the contest that was very close to my heart, since painting/converting whole armies is what really gets me going! I have a picture of the trophy (which Babo wil not let anyone touch, of course!), and some older images of the Temple prior to a 4 part campaign against demons. Once I get the blog going, I can put up many more images!
