Golden Demon/Games Day North America (Chicago 2011) aftermath

Thought Id open a topic for discussing what happened, showing what looked cool etc etc.

Congrats to Vince Hudon aka "boltman"for his well deserved slayer win. It was a great mixture of old faces and new earning awards
and some really strong competition in many categories. I remember someone commenting early in the day that it seemed like many less entries than before but a higher overall level of quality. A nice comment to hear.

The goldenDemon lounge/lessons area was bustling all day wih some great seminars and general sharing of tips and critique. Some great armies were on parade (James Wappel beat out Dave Taylor and one other army that formed the top 3)

Overall it was a really good show and a nice gathering.

Congratulations to all winners. This was my first GD in Chicago.

In general I liked the venue and organization with one exception - see rant below :). Demon Lounge was a lot of fun, however more sitting space is needed. It was pretty packed and people with questions sometimes had to stay in line (I am exaggerating, but only slightly). That would also let people just sit and paint there.

Well, I usually take a lot of pictures but... well Light was horrible beyond believe. No seriously, I thought we had this discussion (about 100 times) and I the last year in Baltimore this problem was solved by using glass display cabinets with internal lights. Not here, not this year. Come on, this is not this difficult if GW cannot afford internal lighting fixtures, let me know, I will donate them. In addition to this I brought new untried camera (never again) and it was a disaster so no pictures from me. Considering that the next Games day will be in Chicago again, please, please, do something about light NOW! Light (or lack thereof) aside. I has a lot of fun and actually learn a thing or two. I had a long and productive discussion with James Craig about weathering and stuff, who convinced me that pigments from Forge World is worth considering, and pointed to some interesting alternatives.

Competition-wise I don't remember much beyond already mentioned Vincent Hudon's Slayer Sword. Besides that, Todd Swanson took gold in 40k single, James Wappel took gold in 40k squad, LOTR single and Fantasy monster, Chris Borer took gold in the Open, and I took gold in Fantasy single.

It was definitely a fun time. I got to meet a bunch of cool folks, and case out the level of the competition for next year.

I ended up snagging a bronze in 40K single for my Sanguinor model. I was very pleased considering the level of entries in that category this year! Drew Drescher also got a gold in 40K large for his Dreadknight conversion. YyyyyYYYYyYYYEEARGH!

I agree Skeeve completely about the lighting. Some of the plexiglass was so scuffed and scraped you couldn't even see through it. Pretty ridiculous if you are at a painting comp (to see people's art), and you can't even get a glimpse until they put them in the no light cases after making first cut..... hmmmm lol

Congrats Elly! Way to go! Are you going to finish your Necrowhatitsname for next year?

How did the judges judge? Did they take the models out of the cases?

I had a blast this year. It was my first at Chicago and I do have to agree that the lighting was horrible. It was awesome meeting the people that I did this year. Kind of nice putting some faces to the usernames of the site. I hung out at the lounge for the weathering session but I totally missed Elly's NMM session....grrr. Maybe he should post a tutorial video on here for us :)

I'm also stoked to say I took silver in the 40k large this year behind Drew Drescher. That was one amazing model!

Can't wait till next year!

This was my first Games Day and I had a lot of fun. Some of the mini's in golden demon were absolutely amazing. I almost didn't enter the competition because I felt like my stuff wasn't very good compared to others. I entered my stuff at about 9:30. At 1 i meandered upstairs to see all the stuff I had missed before...and imagine my surprise when both my entries were in the first cut! Didn't win a demon...but man did that feel great to see my models up there among the really great artists.

I met tons of cool people, got a pic with Jess Goodwin when he joined me for a smoke, and had a great conversation with Mark Bedford while everyone else was in the FW line lol. I can't wait for the next IA:Masterclass book which he says is incoming shortly. I can't wait for next year!

WITH BUGS IN HIS TEETH.

I love that model, and was glad to lose out to it in the end. I'm very happy with my silver daemon, as it'll give me that much more motivation to push myself for next year.

WITH BUGS IN HIS TEETH.

Not only were the bugs in his teeth, they were REAL MOTHERF&#^(&* BUGS! He literally went out in the garden and got bugs the right size to stick in the Ork's teef! No wonder that think took 150 hours to paint. With that said, it was an amazing model and Vince totally deserved the win. We harangued him for about 10 minutes for freehanding some amazing designs on the back of the Ork's jacket that were next to invisible when he was on the bike itself. His response: "Well, I took a picture before I glued it in..." None of my pics turned out well either due to the case/lighting issues. I'll wait to steal mine from the official coverage whenever that comes out.

@war0827: Thanks man! It was great to meet you and your trophy was well deserved. I find funny we kept arguing over whose was going to take the gold and we were arguing for each other's minis! I look forward to hanging out more next year or at Adepticon if you make the trip.

@Elly and Trystan: Yeeaaeeaaaargh! Get to da paint club!

Aside from the lighting it was great. A great level of competition for the most part. I took three Finalist pins, and brought home a weak(but improving) Ahnuld Impression, so to that I say YYYeyyyyeaaarrrrrghhhhh!

Congrats to Vincent, I never got to that cabinet to see it, or 40K Single. But I did see a lot of stuff before the show. Well done to everyone who placed, or got a pin. You folks did a great job with your entries. Hope to be there next year, maybe I can do something then!

Congrats to all the winners, it was a really tough competition this year. I ended up with three finalist pins but I had a blast and learned a lot. I'm stoked for next year and right after I finish the models that khavor sculpted I'm going to get down to working on some entries. Thanks to all the guys in the demon lounge as well, it was awesome to see your stuff and get some tips from much better painters than I.

God, this is really sooo annoying... On every GD there are thousands of people taking Millions of Pictures all the time everywhere, but they never seem to end Up on the Internet somehow... Grgr... We should work on a Live Stream in Future, hehe... Or pay someone to post Pics...

The few that my group got were terrible. Only a handful looked good. The lighting could be better at the cabinets, that's for sure. After several attempts at getting decent photos, I gave up. Sorry.

Considering how awful the cases were until you got to the first cut models, only to find the lighting was crap in those cases. Seems like they're putting less into what should really be the most important part of Gamesday amirite? :p
