Dalsgaard's WIP

I've gotten a bit further with my Commissar.

The red part of the coat and the black shirt and trousers probably needs a few more highlights, but I think I will wait until I've finished the rest, so I can get a better idea of the overall contrast of the mini. I'm very happy with the belt and also think the boots have turned out alright.

I also seem to have found a pretty good photo setup, which shows the colours and contrast fairly accurately.

Nice work there, I agree nice work on the boots and belt. The gold NMM is good too, just some tiny white highlights and you will be done :)
Good work on the red reminds me of a felt lining.

Almost Perftec! Aw, crap.
Hmmm, maybe I should take a 2 year break and come back as a god of paint too  ~sigh~ Back to thinning my paint with tears...

Thanks Canny. I was going for a soft fabric lining, but that it got the look it did is more luck than skill. I tried doing some juicing (I believe it is called), but I need a bit more practice to get a more even coat (no pun intended).

Thinning your paint with tears.. well, there's your problem. You need to thin it with a 50/50 mix of rainbow essence and unicorn sweat ;-)

My commissar is finished, except for the base.

While there are several parts that could be better, I've decided to stop now. I've already pushed my techniques quite a bit on this one and I'm happy with my progress. My biggest problem is still brush control and I'm afraid to mess up some of the stuff I'm happy with, if I continue to mess with the stuff I'm not.

Thanks Kretcher. The next one up is a Confrontation mini (one of those that cfwheeler sent me). I'm just waiting for the primer to dry :)

Welcome back, indeed o_O I have always loved that sculpt and you have really done it justice!

Thanks Zab.

Yes, it is one of the cooler commissars available. I could easily see myself buying him again and redoing him in a year or so.

I've started painting my Confrontation fig, the orc Kolghor. Vegascat over at the WAMP forum challenged me to a match on the WAMP ladder so I have to finish it by February the 14th and do a good enough job to beat him :)

Here's is the first WIP shot. I primed him with GW Imperial Primer yesterday and have added some basecoat colours today.

View attachment 25233

The skin was painted with a 1:2 mix of Beasty Brown and Dark Green (both Vallejo Game Colors), the shoulder plate with GW Warplock Bronze, the leather armour with VGC Beasty Brown, and the cloth with VGC Stonewall Grey.

The cloth has so far gotten four (very thinned) coats and the grey still doesn't cover properly. I am sorry to say that I still have the same problems with light greys and whites that I have always had :-/

Look into GW base paints and Reaper's HD paints. They have some nice heavy pigments that might help with lighter colors. They tend to cover well in a few thin coats even over black. I like your starting palette though, very nice. Don't sweat the cloth too much. You can always hide the uneven coverage under some grime - it is an orc after all ;)

I will check them out, thanks for the tip. I do intend to grime it up a bit :)

I am extremely happy with the green skin, it is the best I have ever been able to paint orc skin. It is a bit lighter in real life so I might give it a yellow glaze, but I will wait until the rest of the mini is done.

After the basecoat of 1:2 Beasty Brown/Dark Green i shaded with a couple of washes of the mix plus GW Seraphim Sepia (wash) and a very small bit of black. Then I started highlighting, first by reapplying the basecoat again and then by adding more and more Bonewhite (VGC) to the basecoat mix, ending with something like 1/2/6 Beasty Brown/Dark Green/Bonewhite.

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to give the finished skin a coat of varnish so it would be easier to wipe off any mistakes when painting the other parts? Is that something some of you do?

very nice! Yes , I use the gloss trick for the eyes on my 28mm figures. It's a great work around until your brush control is back to where you want it ;)

Skin looks really nice, if you get time over before comp ends you could add purple/lighter skin colour to parts of knuckle and some other places to give even more life too the skin.

I haven't really thought of adding other colours to make it look better. Is there a special reason to chose purple or are there just some colours that work well with green skin, where others do not? We are getting to some painting techniques that are advanced for me, but certainly would be nice to have in the tool-bag.

I'm a bit of a nerd for statistics, so I've decided to keep track of my reentry into the miniatures painting hobby. Once a month I will do a little status on number of paints and miniatures I own and how many I've finished, as well as how much money I spend on anything related to the hobby. I'm mostly doing it for ****s and giggles, but thought I would share the numbers here.

End of January:
Paints:
# of Paints: 28
GW: 10
VGC: 16
VMC: 1
Home made: 1

Miniatures:
# of Unpainted Minis: 41
GW: 36
Guild of Harmony: 1
Reaper: 1
Rackham: 3

Minis acquired this month: 6
Minis finished this month: 2

Money spent this month: £190

Currently working on:
Confrontation orc for WAMP Challenge
Tara the Silent (Reaper) for display
