Final progress for today:

Oh and since nowadays it seems it's not self-evident anymore (at least on other platforms) ... Critics and feedback always welcome

I appreciate your insights on the oils. I have been looking at the Youtube vids of people using them for “black lining” and am tempted to give it a shot for some table top minis. Your works suggests that could lead me down a new rabbit hole! Lol.

Thanks a lot :)

More paints for testing arrived today, can't wait to try them out tomorrow :)
But I slowly start to believe I should get some help with my "buy more paints addiction" xD

And she's done. Fun learning piece and quite fast paint job compared to how long I usually need for a mini.

Thanks :)
It's basicly practise and some theory where to put lights as well as try and error ^^

Had a new fast project.
The challenge:
4 Hours max
4 Colors (Vermillion Red, Yloow Ochre, Ivory Black, Titanium White = Zorn palette)

Why on earth would you want to do that?
- Learn to get faster
- Experiment with light and contrast
- Learn color mixing using a limited palette - The Zorn pallete makes it literally impossible for you to break color harmony.
- Experminet with Gouache
- Can I do a mini in 4 hours?

Volenteer was a 12 year old mini that was laying around already primed. Used Gouache paints. They are super opaque, highly pigmented and super matte. They are also reactivateable with water after drying so glazing isn't the best idea -> using to wet paint and scrubbing lifts off the underlaying layers. So opaque layering was the way to go.

The setup:

Half Time about 1 hour 40 min

Great reminder why I don't use 2k priming anymore for ages. Was a realy pain to kill all the white/grey in my shadow areas and wasted the first hour blocking in the shadows -.-
But I finally made it:

3 hours 20min
Only 40 minutes left. Still refining lights and transitions with opaque layers.

Aaaaaaand time over. 4 hours. Quite happy with the result since I had my doubts I could pull it through in that short time. Here are the results:

Was a fun exercise. Learned a lot and was reassured that 2K priming isn't really working for my style of painting on small scale minis.

That is some super clean work for 4 hours, especially with the problems you had on the primer.

Thanks gorb :)
Painted a backdrop sketch for my dryad and put her on a plinth. Covered the printed roundbase it came on with miliput. Now I'm thinking what to do with the root thingies coming out of the ground and what to build around that.

And some more progress. Kinda made the lips worse -.- See it now on the bigger pictures. Otherwise corrected some highlights on her belly and under her breast as well as on her arms and hands. Painted another detail layer on the backdrop and added some 3D plants to add more detail (they still have to be painted though). Still some work ahead but I think it's taking shape :)

Fighting with another 75mm figure. Started with black Primer and brush painted white sketch. Red sketch done with gouache. Then proceeded with the skin. Tried to start with oils but contrast was way to hard due to the mostly black surfaces and the strong white spots. So after a week drying I varnished it and block the base skin values in with acrylics. Still in a very messy stage also not certain about the hues yet. Can't decide between a more yellowish or reddish skintone for mids and highlights. Also uncertain about values and shapes on various spots. But I just put trust into the "sketch and refine" process and hope it will be "refineable" at the end xD

These are some amazing pieces. That Dryad is stunning, and blends so well with the background.

Your description of your thought process while painting skin is the same as mine! I am just never happy with it, and never really know what hues to add in the get the effect I want. Only difference is your pieces are absolutely stunning!

The Dryad piece is gorgeous! The lighting on the backdrop fits seamlessly with the dryad itself, and the shading is just spot on.
The next piece is fascinating, as is your explanation of how you go about painting.

Thanks a lot for the nice comments guys :)

Missed to post some WIPs of my latest project -> Vampire Alchemist (by PollyGrimm)
Here are some late WIP pics:

Finished him last weekend. Here the link to the completed work:

Also started another mini on monday. Had it laying around for a couple of month already. Print worked great. The mini is sculpted in a way that doesn't need supports. So no cleanup needed after printing.

First WIP stage from yesterday:

And from today:

Was thinking for a color of the cloth parts for quite a while. The vibrant megenta would create a huge contrast to nearly any color so I decided to go for something more neutral. But since black looked to booring I try to paint it like translucent silk. It starts getting there but I'm still not happy with her right breast. From the front it looks okay but from the side angle it looks a bit stretched to the side. When I paint a black outline to define the shape better it looks wieder from some camera angles as well though :/

Also no oils so far. Was curious if I can still blend with acrylics xD
Started with wet in wet (wich was somewhat stressful with the fast drying acrylics) but then lost myself in glazing again at some point :/ Also haven't used loaded brush for ages. Will try it again on the blade of the spear. Used that technique a lot some years ago and it was a real game changer for me. Especially for NMM.

Deamonette is finished. Added some warmer highlights to the skin with very thin glazes of VMC - Sunny Skintone to make the highlights pop a tiny bit more (was a tip I got on another forum) and I think it worked quite good.
Also learned uite a bit painting that translucent silk -> will repeat that on another miniature soon.

Hope you like her :)

Stunning mate, your brush skills really came home on this one. The translucent silk is so well done, and your highlights and blends are almost seamless.

Thanks a lot. Was really tempted to grab the oil colors on that one xD
But I wanted to get her finished and not wait several days for the oils to dry.
