I feel like I'm offering too much advice here, but I'd love to see some yellow pinstripes on the pants to tie things together and differentiate the pants from the scabbard. As far as the scabbard itself, I might hit it with some lighter browns, oranges, and/or tans using a bit of blister sponge, then glaze some thin paint, washes, and/or inks over the top to adjust color and contrast.
I think the bows do need a highlight (you may need to go very high, then glaze the contrast back down with red to prevent it turning pink) just to establish the shape in the viewer's eye, but I think the socks are just fine. My favorite part, actually!

Hi Saint,

Don't worry about the amount of advice you're giving. It has all been extremely helpful and I'm using what I can to paint better. I appreciate it greatly.

I had originally thought about doing the pants a different colour altogether but I think that any single colour is still a lot of bland space. I think you are right about the stripes. It would add a lot to the figure and tie it together. I've held off on stripes in the past as I'm unsure how to shade and highlight stripes in shirts and pants. I assume I'll treat it similarly to what I have done for the arms, but any tips on how to achieve a believable look? Glaze in browns to the shadows? Alternatively, I had considered painting the striping down the side in yellow/light tans. Perhaps this would also suit the purpose?

I'll sponge the scabbard a bit for a bit of texture and work on the highlights for the bows and ribbons. I'll try to have an update by the weekend.

Cheers

E.C.W Pikeman *Complete*

Hi All,

I finished up the Pikeman. Added highlights to the bows and ribbons, textured the scabbard and pike, crossed the T's and dotted the lowercase J's.

Kept the base simple as I just wanted to focus on the figure. The pictures, though bad, show that I have to touch up the end of the scabbard. I'll also try to take pics under way better lighting conditions to start a gallery.

Comments and criticism welcome as always.

Cheers

Marauder Update #1

Hi All,

Now that I'm finished the Pikeman, I decided to work on this bust. This is the first bust I will have worked on and the first subject larger than 1/35 / 54mm.

It is marketed as a Fantasy Bust and comes with a choice of two heads and two different types or horns. I keep coming back to the head choice listed below and am planning on painting him as a "Seafaring Maurader". The skull/kraken emblem on the top of his shield sort of chose that for me. However, I want to paint the flesh in tones that imply he's been drowned/undead(?). I like the idea of dead/white eyes hiding behind the full helm.

Colour scheme im thinking dark sea green/turquoise or black for the armour and helmet with white/ivory trim and kraken. I'll likely be glazing pinks and purples into the pale flesh which should pair well with the blacks and greens of the armour.

Any help from those who have painted "drowned" or similar undead flesh would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Marauder Update #2

Slow going but had to find a suitable base and mount this bust.

I have started working on the Marauder and have decided to make his cloak that of a grey wolf. Managed to layer down the greys as well as highlight and shade but I feel like I need to lighten the whites a bit more. I also think I'll glaze in some beige and Browns into the cloak for some variety.

Comments and criticism welcome.

Marauder Update #3

Small update but I added in some Browns into the cloak. It looks better than with all greys but there is still somethin missing that I can't put my finger on.

Thoughts, suggestions?

The mulled colors are very convincing and natural. I've found that the tiniest speck of highlight can add a huge amount of depth. How about going lighter with tiny spots in the highlighted areas?

Btw, I hadn't seen your sculpts until I saw this thread. Really like your dwarf! Kinda like the Rackham sculpts, (who become duergar in my game-world.)

Thanks Priest.

I'll add some more highlights. Maybe once I get some other colours on the bust, the grey cloak wont look so washed out.

As for the dwarf, it is a Rackham dwarf. I'd love to think that I could sculpt like that, but I've got to make a first attempt in the meantime.

Cheers

Marauder Update #5

Started working on the shoulder armour. Decided to treat it as leather armour as there is a lot of other metal work on the bust already. Painted the chest strap leather brown as well, but think I'll be changing it to black. The brown clashes with the reddish brown of the shoulder armour.

I also attached an example of what I'm going for colour wise with the leather armour. Found that picture on Google.

Comments welcome and appreciated.

Real reference makes for a better model . This shows your improving more and more. What I like alot is the color scheme your going with and how your not afraid to try a real referce color choice. Nice neat work so far my man!!!

Very important tip in gonna give you it's up to you if you want to try it mate. First off the face is hidden behind a close faced helmet. So besides a shaded face with shadows painted in , he also has a "natural shadowy face" due to the very deep natural shadows that the face has due to the very hidden face brought on by the way the helmet is. If you look at the face even without any painting, the shadows are quite distinct. So what I suggest is to use very light colors and very subtle shadows when painting the face. The lighter it would be painted would offset those already stark and high degree shading brought on by the way the helmet has been sculpted to seclude and obscure the face.

Priest: Thanks for the comment. I've been going back and forth with whether or not to paint the face as dead or not. I will be weathering the pauldrons (thanks for naming them; I had no idea) pretty hard an we'll see where I go with the chest piece. Thanks for the references. I had been thinking about the dead white eyes all along as there is limited space to get in and detail them. More on that below.

BAM: Thanks for the kind words. I've been really thinking about the colour scheme for this piece as it would be easy to just go crazy with metallics (matching helmet and pauldrons) and I'd rather try something different. I will be changing the cross chest straps to black to match the edging. My issue now becomes how to paint the helmet? Steel with gunmetal edging (to keep it dark) or stick with the leather theme? Thanks for the advice with the face painting. I am still erring on the side of a pale/grey/white face with pink/purple/green/grey shading. Whether it ends up as an undead feel or not will be seen as I progress. The chest piece will also cause me some issues as I'm unsure how to paint it. Again, steel, bronze? Its all a matter of how the colours match I guess. I'll focus on the leather in the meantime.

As for anyone else, I'm all open to comments and suggestions.

Marauder Update#6

Finished the chest plate, straps, and little details and moved on to the head.

Focussed on the eyes last night. Lots of blending to do around the face. I'm open to suggestions for the helmet; colours etc. There will be large horns coming off the sides too.

Comments and critiques welcome

Thanks BAM. Once again, appreciate the kind words. I'll keep him pretty light skinned as suggested. He'll have a yellow-brown bears and hair and with his blue eyes, I think it'll fit.

I've really been enjoying this bust so far. I was always intimidated by the larger scales, but I've found it very enjoyable so far. Looking for my next projects as we speak.

Cheers
