Thanks.

Fiddled around with matte mediums today to see how they behave. Did a quick test of Lahmian Medium, Vallejo Matte medium, Matte Varnish and Testors Dullcoate.
That is the first time I have used dullcoate and boy does it smell bad! All the mediums dulled down my satin shiny teststaff but I personally think the dullcoate and matte varnish did it best. However the mediums did a great job too and is easily added to other paint. Will come in handy at some point.

For the maiden I have decided to let the leather stay shiny for now and then come back to it later. I also did some work on the belt - as you can see in the image. (the worn effect is more suddle in real life). I also found out that the clothing sticking out from under the belt is a part of the light leather - and not the green cloth as I originally thought so I am trying to get that back to brown. (even though her axe will hide it).

P.s The blog and this bust I really keeping me going and I am learning a TON! :D YAY!

I think I have now done 5 different kinds of leather - and even though they look similar the technique has been a bit different.

Worked on the arms today which is supposed to be a darker leather than the one on her chest. Think it turned out okay - maybe a little too sharp in the gradient but overall I am satisfied.

It is interesting seeing the different coatings effects next to each other in the same photo. The maiden is coming along nicely.

Thanks for encouragement :D

I am having problems with the arms as they have more shine than the rest of the bust and I can't seem to bring it down (the more I work on it the worse it gets). So I am moving on to her bracers and hands.

Meanwhile I have set some goals for 2016 - to motivate myself to become a better painter. I thought it would be a good idea to write them here to help me track them and to keep me further motivated.

Alowan's painting goals 2016:
Overall goal is to reach at least 8/10 of my goals
 • Paint a bust (status: about 35% done)
 • Learn to use Scale75 paints / test the scale 75
 • Create 4 scenic bases (one being with water)
 • Paint a drastic light situation on a miniature + OSL
 • Paint at least 5 miniatures
 • Attend a painting class (status: booked)
 • Get private coaching
 • Learn to airbrush/get an airbrush
 • Keep my WIP updated with an average of 2 posts pr month.
 • Paint a miniature where I "overdo" the highlights/contrast (as I tend to have a too short range in contrast)

I have been busy with exams etc. so have not really gotten much painting done lately on the maiden. I have been sporadically playing around with some different ideas and miniatures + bought another stack of minatures and busts to add to my now even more endless stack of unpainted resin shame.

Well as I have been playing around with some small dioramas I have some wip images. I would like to know peoples oppinion on which mini fits the ruins best (both the tower ruins and the greek ruins) as I am having problems deciding which fits best.

I think the first pic looks good, the 28mm lady (I forgot her name even though I have her lol) looks a better scale on that first base than tiriel, I also think tiriel looks better on that other base than artemis did, I think she looked like she was facing the wrong way for the base

Thanks for the input. I was thinking about making the archways higher - but I think you are right and I will go with the smaller mini. Just have to figure out if she will "drown" in such a large base and if I should add another mini to it.

I actually find sizing bases quite hard at the moment for some reason.

Yet another post from todays basing fun. Stil have problems with how to size the bases for the larger minis as I like the smaller plinths but still like room around the mini.

Also an image of my flying squiq which I am planning as my first entry into a GW painting competition! (plan to paint it the way Sproket (whos painiting style and skills I admire) painted his Dark Eldar Scourge Wings as he has made an excellent tutorial).

And as I found it really cool and inspirational to see other painters workstations I took a picture of mine to share:

That is far too organised lol, I'm like a cat when it comes to my paint station, no matter how much room I get I will fill it, I have at least started tidying it between projects :p

I like the look of that squigg, it looks like it'll be fun to paint

Lol...yeah way too organized. I like the variety of these next two projects.

Well my desk constantly seeks towards it's chaos state! But I figured that if I expand the room for chaos it goes slower.. alas my floor and shelfs etc is now pure chaos while my desk looks kinda organised.. (thank god I for my new hobby room and the ability to close the door when we have guests!)

Lol. i know the luxury, but my wife suggested moving our son to my hobby room and me to his old room upstairs. Still figuring how to move all my preciouses in a timely manner....she started this conversation over a year ago, so I may be in trouble.

Hehe classic problem of where to put the ever expanding hobby stuff! :D Going to have the same problem at some point - but for now I am the lucky owner of a well placed and rather large hobby room (which my gf refers to as our office - and I to as my hobby room) ;)

My initial concept for the squiq was the following:
A flying squq moving over a desert base with a flowing banner to indicate the speed and wind.
View attachment 47972

However when placing it on the base the banner kinda breaks with the flow/look. I also tried to put it in his hand - but I kinda like that he is holding a wooden sword.
Fiddeling through my bitbox I came upon a small squiq that I tried to add to simulate a squiq that is jumping with the flying one - but yet again it seems to crowd the base and take away focus from the flying one. Might just leave it alone on the base and keep it simple.

Generally I am thinking about the squiq more as a gliding creature than a flying one with the goblin and squiq gliding over a battletorn desert landscape. The movement of the squiq alone might be enough to indicate that while keeping the focus on the squiq and rider. Any thoughts?

I have not been that busy with painting etc. lately. Simply a bunch of work etc. to do since I graduate as a medical doctor in about 1,5 months. But I got around to working on some bases and priming them black.

I think they turned out rather well and look forward to painting them. And then I figured out a way to get the tree plinths sides really smooth by adding plaster and "polishing" it - ended up really well.

Those bases look good. And congrats on closing in on the graduation. That will be a big change after all the years of studying.

Well I haven't posted in a while. Not that I haven't been painting.

I have been attending a workshop with Roman from Massive Vodoo and just recently bought myself an airbrush. And I am building a lot of different bases since I find that to be extremly fun at the moment.

I also bought a few zombies to do a quick paintjob on and while the miniatures are subpar I actually learned a bit from painting them. (3 more on the way)
View attachment 50849

As said I also started using my airbrush and have been getting off to a good start. However I encountered a problem when priming white as it seems to "speckle" a bit more than the white primer on can while the black goes on extremly smooth and nice (vallejo primers). Normal paint goes on really smooth and nice too!

Started working on the Forged Monkey, Ragnok, Norse Orc.

I made a colorsheme before starting and I still can't decide if to go witht he yellow/green or light blue highligh, but overall I have an idea of where to take it (aiming for a colder blueish orc as the one Roman Lappat have painted).

Nice thread. Just found it,.. (not sure how I missed it,..) I must be the only painter I know who doesn't paint my thumb as I go. It's something that I see in almost everyone else's thread. Is there some purpose to this that I've been missing all these years?
