I've blocked in some base colours to get an idea of the overall scheme.
I'm pretty happy with the dark clothing and fair skin (will get a lot fairer) but I'm not 100% convinced by the red I've chosen for the ribbons. I think that it could be a little too dark and a little too far on the purple side.
I like the tone of the second picture. There appears to be enough flat surface on the ribbon that some free hand texture might complement the texture of the cloaks. Maybe some small cross hatching.
Thanks for the input everyone. I'll sit on this a bit and come back to it later. The next job is to add some interest to the body itself, then I'll be doing the cape and finally come to these ribbons. I like the idea of giving them some freehand texture or pattern, I'll see how much time I have at the end of the project.
Over a week since I last posted, which means over a week since I last painted! busy busy busy
I'm hoping to get some done over the weekend... not holding my breath though. :/

Well after a few crazy weeks my good wife managed to wangle me a day to myself and I spent a decent portion of it painting. It was really good to get the brushes back into my hand, even if I did start off slowly.
I've been working on Obulous for Web Monkey's July competition since there isn't a lot of time left.
I decided to ignore the cape for the moment and focus on the main body.
Overall I'm fairly happy, although I'll have to go back to the face again some time (particularly his right eye...).
What do people think about the turquoise ribbons? Does the colour work for you?
Thanks WGS.
Yeah, I still want to bring the ribbons up quite a lot. Not sure about the free hand, will all depend on whether I have time as you say. I should get a couple of hours tomorrow morning as well so I might still be in luck.
I think the ribbon colour looks good mate, it's similar enough that it ties in with the cape colours but not so much that it blends in if you know what I mean
