Too cool Trevor. I have almost the same background but I try to stay out of the mud and focus on beaches. I work now for British Aerospace doing research for airborne sensors that find targets underwater and classify the bottom. So I am an expert at bottom classification at the beach :)

Eric sits on beach
.. thats a nice sandy one. that one too.. could do without that one..

too bad I don\'t get out for field work as much, plus I am in front of the computer all the time. I have to get out more to ground truth all of the bottoms I have classified.

So you are a bottom classifier. lol

I take it back, I don\'t work for an insurance company. I use an insurance company\'s computers to post messages on web forums!!

I am a technician/operator at a Synchotron Ring ( other wise known as a Particle Accelerator), however I plan on leaving this career as soon as my plans for world wide domination see fruition.
Either that or until I get a job as a porn star.:D:Dlol

It\'s interesting to me Mr Hill 1...

We are in almost the same line of work:D

@Dragonsreach: So you are an LEA wallah too eh? Glad you didn\'t cite EPs amongst the people who you find a pain in the arse. Is that because you don\'t find them a PITA (present company excepted of course), because they don\'t bother you, or were you being polite???:flip:

On second thoughts, disregard that last option;)

Well.
Im a patternmaker and no not for dresses and such but an engineering patternmaker. That means making things out of wood/metal/plastic to go of and be moulded for casting.Sort of like sculpting minis, but the stuff I do can be a MOD lock part a few mm wide to a rudder horn for a ship 30ft long so Ive got to be pretty versatile with the hands.
I can read an engineering drawing with my eyes closed by now and have an uncanny ability to visualise anything drawn in my head in 3 dimensions, rotating, exploding and exploring the part all with the power of my mind.

Well, you did ask.And thats when I actually make it to work as Im also a manic depressive and first rate hypercondriact(sp?).

Typical - 4 pages in and I\'m the first person to admit to being an accountant....

I do take pride in one thing - I\'m living proof that you can\'t combine aptitude with numbers alongside artistic creativity in one person - I\'ll refer you to Exhibit 1, anything that I\'ve painted, as proof.....

Just another geek ;)

I\'m an IT engineer and work in a service company. My clients have been : Volvo, French Electricity, Atari, Carrefour (~ Wal Mart).

I wouldn\'t call it a \"sexy\" job, but it pays the minis ... and the bills ;).

I make toy soldiers for a living. Bit slow at the moment. Not sure if I\'ve lost my love for it or if I\'m just a bit burned out.

Hopefully the latter as I lack much else in the line of skills usable for moneymaking...

No shame in being an accountant, heid. One of my best friends - who also plays D&D and occasionally paints a mini or two - is an accountant. She wields a pretty mean knitting needle, too.

That is a real gift you know???

I know it\'s \'tongue in cheek\' but it\'s a specific talent some people have. I can do it, and it wasn\'t until I was about 30 that I found out that some people can\'t??? It comes at a price, as you will have realised:D. I can\'t do basic Math, but I can play technicolour, 3D \'videos\' in my mind and, like you, look at a drawing and mentally render it in 3D.
It\'s a bit of a useless talent really, as far as I am concerned, and plays no direct part in my current employment. It was useful when I was an engineer however:flip:

EDIT: I married an accountant so we have both bases covered:D

I think I have said this before, but in case I haven\'t...

I am a professional video game designer working on games for the next generation of home consoles. Though I think I\'d rather be working on a PSP game (that little machine is amazing!). I dropped out of college about 10 years ago to work in the game industry, so it has been my only real carreer.

During college and the end of high school, I worked off and on in a large hobby store.

You do realize that now half the people on this site will be intensely jealous of you?

Contractor

I\'m a Contractor. Mostly I do IT malarky, but occasionally I get to make my hobby my job with a little filmwork. The coolest thing I did was build a victorian Psychiatric prison. Well that\'s a lie. I organised it, I budgeted it, I helped plan it and I helped to do some fiddly bits. A large team of builders did the hard work, a proper scenic painter painted it, I just did a little encouraging.

Right now though I\'m at the BBC World Service helping them move away from Tape and into the 21st Century...

@Steve

You know what the worst thing is.......everyone at work knows I\'m the best at reading drawings and do they ask for help?
You guessed it.

Not being big headed but I actually do it without trying, like having autocad in the brain or something.I suppose its like some people with photographic memories and such.

Ive just realised I do it with mini painting too.Visualising multiple colour schemes etc in my head before painting them.
Hmmm.

LOL If you ever think of a way of marketing this talent...

...let me know.

And vice versa of course;)

EDIT: Off (off) topic a bit...but I read the other day where they conscripted lots of \'colour blind\' people during the first World Wars to use as artillery spotters.

Why?

Because most camouflage meant nothing to them!!

Strange how one man\'s affliction is another man\'s gift:D

IT Customer Service Specialist

That is my \"official\" title. Basically I work in the IT department of the world headquarters of the nation\'s largest outboard motor company, installing software using SMS and replying to emails like \"I get this blue screen on my pc when I boot up\" and \"Can you reset my Lotus Notes password?\". I aspire to some day either open my own game store (you have to drive over 40 miles in any direction to get to a decent one), or become a full time artist (mini painting, vehicular portraiture)

But right now I have the best of both worlds. A good paying job and a family that supports my \"hobby\".:D
