I've been painting a wee bit off and on for a stretch, but I'd really like to move a bit further in terms of technique/skill. This forum looks like a great spot and a good way to stay active & motivated!

Working on the feral Kromac for a bud and figured I'd start there. The flesh is coming along, and still needs some highlighting - particularly in/around the face. I started to base the blue/hair, but haven't touched it too much otherwise. The box art is a lot of brown on brown which looks great at a display level, but I'm not quite sure I'd be able to pull it off.

WIP BB Ogre

Started up a BB ogre. Don't think I'll be buying the army painter primer again. Gave a seriously chalky finish. Pretty pleased with the red though. The blue isn't great, but the edge highlighting is a bit better than I've done in the past. Botched the left shoe too, the buckle's just tucked a bit too deep.

I don't know, the buckle doesn't look too bad. Can see what you mean about the chalky finish though, that's not great. Seems to be concentrated on the neck area as well which isn't ideal. His backside is looking pretty good though (don't tell anyone I said that!).
Kromac looks good so far as well. As for the display level painting, you never know until you try. Having not seen the box art though, I think the blue is a nice addition

I've had the same chalky problem with some GW primers, I have never had the same problem with hardware branded primers, maybe older stock. I use a paint gun now, so not an issue. I do live in a warm climate and have to store paints in a fridge, I have found this helps canned primers give a smoother spray.

Since nobody else said it, welcome! Your stuff looks great, and this is the place to improve.

A real shame about that primer... ruins an otherwise very good paint job. Okay for gaming, I guess. This is the reason why I completely stopped using spray primers - they are too fickle. I don't know what the weather is like where you're at, but several of mine went bad because the room I stored them in was too cold during winter. Heat can do the same thing. And air moisture. And lack of moisture. And you really need to shake the heck out of them, every time, to be sure. So I prime everything by airbrush now, takes a bit more time but the result is perfect every time. Also, spray cans are relatively expensive, so if you do a lot of painting you'll soon save in what you spent on the airbrush. Also, the airbrush can do loads of other neat things for it.

A little tip about pictures - take them from slightly above the mini, unless you are showing off some detail in the middle or whatever. Give a more 'correct' point of view.

If you want to research basing - massivevoodoo.blogspot.com is the place to go. For this one, I think it's not all that much you can do, since it is for Blood Ball you can't go all out, but I suggest some small rocks, maybe some longer grass tufts and maaaaaybe a little bit of debris, like armour parts, skulls, or whatever. Go light. One or two details should be enough for a base like this.

Hey! Thanks for the replies guys.

It's odd that you mention spray cans being fickle as that's the exact reason I went back to using cans. I have a paasche talon and 1/4 (1/8?) hp badger compressor. It's not a super high end airbrush, but the setup set me back ~350. I figured the same - even if I just prime and basecoat it'll pay itself off in the long term. It's caused me nothing but headaches though, and has been sitting on the unloved toy pile. Either the paint sprays, but is too inky and thin, or it clogs and requires full disassembly and cleaning. The texture's been super inconsistent as well. Going from smooth to annoying stippling despite knocking paint off the tip frequently. That's obviously a shortcoming on my part, but I've ruined two terminator sets ($100) experimenting. I should probably spend some time tinkering and spraying sprues to get a handle on it. It'd be nice to get more use out of it as there's some awesome effects that the AB would make much simpler.

Next Level Painting is cool. The live streams are especially nice since you get to see him tinkering with the brush during his painting instead of just the application. Keeping a toothbrush to swipe dry paint off the brush is something I wouldn't have thought of, for example, or blowing air back into the cup for mixing. I think I just need to spend some time with it or grab some models I don't have a wallet investment in. Just a bummer having been burnt - especially given how much of a pain it is to setup, clean, and prep for airbrush work.

Vallejo air primers are the way forward buddy. 30psi will throw a good mix out of an airbrush consistently, but I usually thin them ever so slightly. They will start to clog the brush after prolonged use, but keeping the air flowing and pulsing the paint back and forth will clear it enough to use.

I take it your airbrush is double action?

Good work on the painting btw. Have a look at getting some tones glazed on the face. If BaM stops by I'm sure he'll be glad to share the usual picture.

DG Base and color scheme test

Hey picked up dark imperium and I'll probably be chipping away at some nurgle burglars. Testing the color scheme for the drone and tinkering with basing:

I'd like to smooth out the transition on the beige areas, but it should look alright (?). Higher contrast on the cracked base areas maybe? Thoughts & input are always appreciated!

Suitably distressed looking paintwork on the nurgle guys, as it should be. I like the cream as well.

Thanks! The bronze/silver look really similar in the pics. I might revisit those colors. I don't want to have a bunch of bling bells dangling off all of them though.

Signed up for a mini swap on reddit. Partner wanted a dragon - so I picked up the warhammer DE (?) dragon. Decided to start with the base. The yellow flock was initially much heavier, but it just looked like clown spots. Scraped most of it off in favor of a heavy vallejo earth smear. Hopefully I can paint the model up to snuff, looks like a pretty fun beasty. Going to get the wings in order before moving to the main body.

Fired up the AB to do some work on the wings. There's some really harsh brush transitions and awkward "oops" spots. Gave the golden glaze medium a shot - have a feeling I should check out some tutorial vids on best use. It didn't really turn my wheels. Happy for any input though. Also, going to get a lightbox setup sometime soon, so should be posting better pics in the near future.

Got the blue base put down on the body of the dragon. Probably going to attach him to the base for easier handling after the wash on his back dries. Also have to clean up some in his "armpits". Ton of detail work to do yet. The mold line on his neck is going to drive me batty, but too little too late. There's a pretty gnarly seam on his underside as well - live and learn :)
