Should I Start Building A Loyalist Marine Force Or A Chaos One?

Hi guys, not sure if I’m posting this in the right place or not, but if I’m not I’m sure the big chief\'s will put it in its rightful place.

I’m what you could probably call a newcomer of sorts to the hobby. I\'ve been into it for about 4 years, and so far I haven\'t finished an entire unit or an entire army in that whole period of time. This is about to change.

A few years back, in the UK White Dwarf, shortly after the release of the new Hordes of Chaos models for WHFB, Paul Sawyer (the then editor of the UK WD), did an article on collecting an army on a set budget each month. I was amazed at how much he could get for this amount and how quickly he managed to get everything painted up. I tried it before but failed miserably! (I’m just getting to my point....)

So now, after trying to convert Space Marines into Chaos Space Marines (And failing miserably again I might add) I\'ve decided to collect ONE of the two said armies, to use in games of Apocalypse. Here\'s where YOU guys come in. I need input. I need ideas. I need fluff, comments and criticisms, and any slagging off you guys think I need....all in the good name of the hobby and bettering myself as a hobbyist as well.

So here\'s the deal. You guys tell me what you\'d like to see me do (Within reason!) and I’ll set aside a budget, and with this budget I’ll buy models and components and try to convert and paint up one of the armies. Each time I’m ready and have finished a unit I’ll be asking you guys what I should get next. All this will culminate in me eventually buying a Titan from FW. If at any time you guys get annoyed with this thread etc, PLEASE let me know so I can stop being a pest, as the last thing I want to do is hack anyone off.

Anyhow enough blabbering, on with the input side of things. The first thing I need to know fellas (and ladies) is this......Chaos, or Imperium? The Ruinous Powers or The Emperor\'s Finest? Let me know which one of these two you guys think I should start building an army out of......and whichever gets the most votes, wins......who knows, maybe I’ll be able to pick a lot of things up, and maybe I’ll throw in some radical ideas that you guys never thought of for your armies. Once I feel I’ve got enough feedback for that first question there will be more to come!

hmmm thats a very tough decision, i myself find myself making it over and over again on a weekly basis,
chaos have slightly more specialised squads ie bezerkers but they all still can multirole like all space marines; and they have just had a munch of awsome new mini released
and loyalists get all the funky \"new\"equipment, weapons and tanks my favorite being the Plasma Cannon and Vunerable Dreadnought
i hope that helps but as far as a certian answer i can give you one, i just cant choose between the two

I would say Loyalist Marines.

Yeah, I agree, Id like to see more iron hands stuff floating around, especially if its done well, and there is lots of room for conversions etc in the iron hands, more so than most chapters, and they do have lots of nice toys now too.

@Ebonbuddha and Bengoodall:- Thanks for the ideas fellas, iv just read up on some background fluff for these guys and i have to admit they do sound pretty cool. Will leave this thing until tomorrow night and see where it goes, so far Iron Hands are in the lead though

There\'s no point in asking if you might suggest something and then just go ahead and suggest it anyway in the same sentence. Leave a little suspense so we can decide if you will or will not.

Anyway, I voted for loyalists. You could go for a White Scar army, a whole battlefield of bikes, attack bikes and land speeders.

yeah i know, but hey at the time i posted the reply to that, the Iron Hands was the only thing on it at the time. I\'m still keeping my options open, i like the background etc on them, but i haven\'t decided if thats what i want to do this time around. Maybe when i finish this one i might turn my hands to the sons of ferrus.

In the meantime i\'m keeping my options open, and il wait to see if i get anymore ideas by tomorrow night. Iv managed to salvage a couple of models from my messy chaos conversions, and these are:- Terminator Librarian, Venerable Dreadnought, A Land Speeder, a Terminator Chaplain, and a unit (possibly 2 units) of Terminators - both normal and assault.

Once i decide what i\'m doing il be posting pics up on the WIP part of the forum, but in the meantime keep those ideas coming in!

Oy Vay! a 50 50 split. I voting for Loyalists, not sure on the chapter. I have a space wolf made of the extra models that came with the base game boxes over the years, plus a couple of wolf boxes and some extra models that I picked up in the dollar bin. All this I thought was quite fun converting, and you get the chance to go a little chaosy with the 13th company.
Just have fun either way, and good luck! I think that we will all be watching this thread.

@mudduck:- hmmm interesting idea \"chaosifying\" the 13th company - after all they were stranded in the warp weren\'t they? i always think some of the WHFB Chaos Marauder heads look better on Space Wolves than any other head iv seen as well!

well you could do both
basiccly do the \"fallen\" (dark angles) but do them with a mix of the models (because there all plastic) or the white scars but then the problem is if you want a titan. iron hands are cool I think and so are 13th company. if you want the titan go loyal because they have more titan choices.
another idea I once thought was you could do space marines who have just become caos but arnt totally caos so you could use all the kits and have all the new titans and weapons but use the rules of the loyal ones.
also you dont have the article because Iv got a budget and if I want an army then the article will help

also if you do 13th company you could do the whole army/company for apocalipse and if you lose the companys destroyed.

that is a cool idea about apocalypse catman.....might try that at some other point with a DIY chapter.

As for \"recently turned to chaos\" i tried converting my older SM models using some Chaos Warrior bits from WHFB and they sucked!

basically a big bad ass tank/walker/pray to whatever god you believe in it doesn\'t come after you thingy - slightly expensive, but worth it if painted up nicely! that will be the absolute LAST thing i get though, and then i can field the thing in games of apocalypse

btw rumor has it fw is making it IN RESIN
but unless you sell the place you live in I dont see how anyone could buy it ( not trying to offend but im a school kid and little amounts for adults are big amounts for me)

lol they are pretty expensive, but worth it at the end - you should check out bolterandchainsword.com - theres 2 guys doing up a titan on there (ones painting it the others sculpting bits for it out of milliput and green stuff)....

Anyway to get this thing back on topic - any other ideas for what army to do guys?
