Sculpt-along? Newbie Sculptors welcome :)

Hey folks :) I've been dabbling with sculpting for a while now and feel like I've hit a bit of a brick wall (not really making any progress)
About a year ago I was following a thread on another forum where a few people that had just started sculpting were all working on a different figure every month, posting their progress. It helped motivate me personally whilst getting feedback from each other and some more experienced sculptors was another added benefit.
Is this something that anyone here would be interested in? There would be no commitment in terms of if you don't like the monthly subject (anyone involved would take turns in picking the monthly topic) you simply sit it out that month. Again the monthly topic I found was a good pace and didn't put too much pressure on anyone (some finished faster than others but everyone got to work to their own pace) but some of the guys were looking to do 2 a month.
Please feel free to comment and let me know what you think :)

This is the link for the other thread:

Cool :) any suggestions of a subject for the first month? My thoughts were a standard bearer, comic book/cartoon character, or vampire hunter. I think with either of these there is plenty of artistic license but you can also find plenty of source material on each

Subscribed! I have a big tub of magisculpt and bunch of green stuff!

Standard bearer sounds pretty advanced. Comic book character sounds like a lot of anatomy... I vote for Vampire hunter!

I wouldnt mind a go at this, barring either minor modifications or additional details I've not done much sculpting and would like to get some decent practise in.

I vote for either Standard Bearer or Vampire Hunter :)

^^ no pressure then :) I like the idea of the Vampire Hunter so we will go with that first (from now until October) then the Standard Bearer after that.

I was thinking it would be good if each month we all tried to put forward at least one idea in to a pool of topics to pick from. Who ever picked last nominates the next person to pick and if we try and have 3 months topics in advance at any time.

I want to keep everyone interested and it is as much about having fun as it is about learning from each other. Moonmin has (unknowingly) volunteered to pick the next category for December :)

Again different people work at a different pace, it is not a race. If anyone finishes early (which can happen from time to time ;) ) please still drop in over the month and point us in the direction of anything else you are working on :)

Also, I have never really run anything like this before so if anyone has any pointers / suggestions please feel free to pass them on.

Thanks

Excellent! I shall get thinking. Will November be a new sculpt too or will the vamp hunter and standard bearer be six week projects?

Perhaps I will start on my vamp hunter right away... Are we posting on this same thread or linking to a separate WIP thread for tidiness sake? Your call boss!

Post in this thread rather than linking. The Vampire Hunter from here until end of the month and the Standard Bearer will be for October, probably be a bit of over lap but no big deal .

Been thinking about my VH and I think I'm gonna either go for WILLIAM WALLACE : VAMPIRE HUNTER! (inspired by the Abe Lincoln film with a Scottish twist)or a steam punk Buffy style Slayer.

Allow me to set the ball rolling!

Bit pushed for time ATM (two commissions and personal sculpts coming out of every pore...) so started with an armature I had prepared earlier. The armature was prepared using florist wire (plastic coated wire, recommended to me once by a GW chap in Sheffield who I believe was named Chris Baker...) with strategic sections of putty to assist posing. I added extra lengths of copper wire for both a stake (right hand) and Kingdom Death style lantern (left hand). Note that one of his feet was lost to the mysterious carpet of doom, never to be found again...

I am going for a more cartoon-like style for this sculpt, so expect lots of fun details like string of garlic and (dammit I forgot the) crucifix (which was gonna go in the left hand!!!).

Just spent a little time "fleshing out" the armature. I'm working with a mixture of Green Stuff and MagicSculp putties and (so far) the GW sculpting tool. Once cured I will sort out the left hand, as I'm not too happy with it so far. As mentioned in the previous post I may revert to my original (forgotten idea) of a crucifix in the left hand.

For anybody wishing to join in the sculptalong but not quite sure how to start, may I recommend the Warploque video blogs from earlier this year. You can find them through his Youtube channel. I would recommend though that if you do add MagicSculp to your putty mix be sure to wipe down your sculpting tools with a damp cloth or tissue at the end of each session. Magicsculp is reasonably soluble in water but once cured it can be a bit of a 'mare to remove from your tools. If your tools are caked in putty there will be hopeless for creating a smooth surface when sculpting! Speaking of which, a recent revelation for smooth sculpting has been the bladed end of the GW sculpting tool. I once used it only for cutting, but it is great for smoothing outwards from various nooks and crannies.

Nice start man :) You'll be finished by the end of next week at this rate!

I have thrown together the start of mine and I'm actually really happy with the proportions for a change. I can't remember what kind soul put this up before but I was pointed towards this blog -->

I know personally it gave me a really good idea of the technique behind sculpting a mini from armature up. Get the armature (wire frame) right and it will really help later on down the line.

Moonmin, do you think tomorrow if you get a chance you could put up some pictures of some of the tools you use? The ones I am using I bought from Ebay, just some metal tools and files but I will do the same tomorrow.

Cheers! When do we get to see your armature then? :beerwave:

The Bombshell Miniatures sculptor is great and that is indeed a very handy tut'. I like how the third photo down looks like she is Carlton Banks dancing, lol.

I may tackle the face tomorrow. Most great sculptors start here, as it is the most important part of the sculpt, the focal point. As such, I have always put it off as long as possible! In the name of progress (and preparation for a current commission piece) I will get on with it.

[Edit] Yes - will photograph my commonly used tools over the weekend. My collection is quite hefty but I currently just use a few of these. I'm not one who can just stick to a couple of tools and I think at the moment I probably routinely use about ten (2 embossing tools, 2 clay shapers, a needle tool, 4 dental tools and a knife).

[Edit] This sculpting tool is excellent quality and when I use neat Green Stuff it is my go-to tool, as the results are so smooth. I believe I used it quite heavily when sculpting my recent Creepy Mouth Monster*.
