Exalted Seeker Chariot

A quick post before bed of some work I did on one of the Daemonette riders for the Exalted Seeker Chariot. The camera seems to have flattened the contrast a little as the shadows look a little deeper in real life (as well as murdering the sharpness) - on the whole I'm reasonably pleased with the result. Anyone think I should work some blue/purple/black into the shadows around the neck/under the arm?

Continued work on the Daemonette and managed to get the claws and feet blocked in, though I'm not quite sure what colour(s) to use for the highlights. Got the basic metals in place as well and the hair. I also added a little bit of purple to the deeper shadows that have helped the contrast on the skin a little bit, thinking of adding some white to my highlight colour and giving the hotspots a once over.

C&C welcome as always !

I like this and how its coming out. Im not skilled enough to offer advice. I am looking forward to seeing the finished job though!

Thanks DMcc, I'm enjoying painting them far more than I thought I was going to. I've not made much progress on the Daemonette herself as I spent most of the time painting one of her sisters to see how they will look as a whole on the chariot.

Overall I'm quite happy with the direction they're going in, though still not entirely sure which colours to use on the feet and claws - I'm thinking either a stark grey through to white or a grey/purple more in keeping with the GW models.

Most of my time has been spent assembling the chariot itself, which was reasonably painful due to the absurd wheels.

Other than that, made a start on the champion daemonettes. I'm doing them in a more pale tone to make them stand out more, sadly once i started painting I noticed something funky has happened to the primer. In places it's pitted and folded, haven't a clue how as it looked fine when applied.

Sorely tempted to strip them and start over, but have resolved to finish painting and see how noticeable it is at the end of the process.

Yeah, this is the first time that I've had the primer go funny on me. I'm using Vallejo surface primer and it has been good to me for the past few years - not sure what happened this time. Oh well, i'll see what happens with the next model, but it's a pain in the backside.

The White Dwarf

Kinda stalled on the Chariot for now, not sure how I'm going to approach the steeds: should I go colourful old school style or keep to the more muted modern schemes? In the meantime I made a start on the White Dwarf and spent some time doing his face. Been a while since I've tried to up my painting game and I'm reasonably happy how how the skin turned out - I made a small mistake on the left eye (right in the picture) that I need to tidy up, and the blends on the cheeks need to be smoothed a little (though they seem much smoother in real life - maybe the phone camera is messing it up - really need to get my proper camera working).

For a finecast model I seem to have struck lucky as it's quite intact and didn't require that much work to tidy up (though I've just noticed some flash that I missed when cleaning *sigh*).

Anyway, comments and criticisms welcome as ever.

Made some progress on this figure. Got the black of his long coat done and have blocked in the hat and metals. The gloves are about halfway done: some more shadows and highlights to add.

Still finding burs and flash as I go along that I somehow missed during initial cleaning.

A tip for spotting flash/ seam lines is to spray undercoat White or grey then wash over with a dark color.
Under a good light source check over close with a file & sharp blade.
Also make sure you have a solid, smooth block of base colour before starting to highlight etc

Thanks for the tip 10Ball, I'll try it on my next project! I think I rushed into painting this one a little bit - was just amazed to find a finecast model that wasn't a misshapen mass of resin. What I am finding with this piece is that a lot of the burs and oddities look very similar to parts of the model. Take for instance the triangular bur beneath the scale mail coat: I had originally assumed that this was an undercoat of some kind, but as I came to paint it I realised that it was indeed just an erroneous lump of resin. Oh well, lessons learned!

Haven't had much time to paint, so not much progress. Decided that the black wasn't working for me so I started to redo his coat and hat in dark brown. It's not done yet (have some smoothing and further highlights to do), but I already prefer it to the black.

Anyway, let me know what you think!

Managed to get a bit more work on the coat done - much prefer the brown, I think it suits the character far better. Also added some highlights to the gloves as well as a little bit of wear.

Think I may hit the model with some varnish as I noticing the vallejo paint is a little more vulnerable to wear than the GW stuff was, though I much prefer the vallejo.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think.

I paint my thumb.
If you mount the mini in a way you never have to touch it, then the paint wouldn't flake, you also leave all kinds of residue from your fingers which can affect the paints and surface.

Thanks GreenOne, but boy do I feel silly. All of my pins were occupied but i'd quite forgotten about my pin drill - problem solved! Started work on the other leather bits, and am starting to feel that the piece is coming together nicely.

You miss some colors, otherwise well painted. It's too brownisssshhhhh. :)

What is your ratio paint/water?

Hi Teronus: the colour palette is deliberately limited as I was trying out a load of new (surprise surprise) brown paints - I hope to offset the dearth with the model's companion piece (if you've seen the model before, he comes in a sort of mini-diorama). As for thinning, i usually use 1:5 (paint/water), but am currently suffering from the extreme lack of humidity here at the moment which is drying the paints our ridiculously fast. I've gone up to 1:10 at times. But then I find that the paint starts to lift from the model itself. Perhaps I should invest in some drying retarder?

Also, just looking at the photo now I notice that the metals on the hammer are looking very pitted; this doesn't show up to the naked eye (or at least not to mine at any rate) so I wonder if this is an aberration caused by the phone or by the surface of the model itself?

A warm green can be good for highlighting browns. Be careful with pastel type colours like rotten flesh etc. it can give a good extreme highlight but for blending up can leave a real 'jump' in contrast.

On this goblin I used some dark reds for some shades and oranges for some mid/high tone, with greens for the highlights.
I purposely made the painting 'rough' to give the impression of aged leather.

Agree the komando khaki would departure the blue and also keep it cool which blue is alternately you could use a warm like a beige ushabit bone just a thought process when talking color theory I for instance always like warm colors especially on my highlights.
