Hey Fox, I'm using the black primer through an airbrush usually (occasionally I brush on, depending on the size of the job). With the Primaris I left them a full 24 hours before going over with the first coat of paint, though I tend to only leave it for 4 or so hours if I'm eager to get started. With the Intercessors it was a case of spraying them then life getting it's annoying self in the way :D

This time I've noticed a bit of rippling in places and in once instance had bare plastic exposed on a shoulder pad when I went to touch up with a brush through a few layers of airbrushed paint. Also have a few lumps that have come through: personally I think I was just unlucky and got a pot that was on the shelf a bit too long. It's not really noticeable unless you know what to look for (or you're trying to paint the blighters), but still annoying. I'll this pot to brush on duty and use my grey until I get another black one.

As for the progress on the intercessors, I've just about finished the edge highlights and am in the process of tidying up the shoulder pads - noticed that some of the white bands were off centre so had to correct them before applying the red lines. I'll post some photos if I make more progress tomorrow.

EDIT: Just thinking about it, it could be the humidity messing with it I suppose - been pretty damp here the past week or so - 35C and 70%+ humidity.

It could be the humidity, it could be that you're thinning the primer too much and it's not adhering to the model as well as it could. Maybe spray on a thin layer of matte varnish after the primer to settle it in a bit and make give the next layer of paint something to grab on to.

I swear by matte varnish, it's awesome.

I also use Vallejo air primer, I haven't had any issues with it so far, but I'm still pretty new to using my air brush, so probably just haven't run into issues yet. I have a few of the models lying around from my Ultramarine army, but they were all painted so long ago that I don't think their quality is really up to being presented ;) I'll either have to save up and get myself some Primaris marines (which is very tempting) or just pick up a few of my unpainted marines sitting on my shelf and paint them at my current level following my scheme.
Again love what your doing with your marines! Keep up the good work and I hope you get the primer issue solved.

Tempest Guard - Intercessor Squad 1, Redemptor Dreadnought (RedDred)

@Foxtail: Yeah, matte varnish may well be the route I go down. I've just done another batch of figures with the same pot and it seems to be adhering better this time around: made no changes to how it was applied, but the humidity is a lot lower today so *shrug*. I'll keep an eye on it over the next few hours.

Intercessor Squad 1

So, made some progress on these guys last night and am pretty happy with the results so far:

Just noticed that I somehow managed to completely miss all of the backpacks when I was doing the edge highlights >:/ though other than that I'm quite happy with the results for a table top unit. Took about 2 - 3 hours on each figure at a guess, so I suppose that shows an improvement on pace if not skill :D

Redemptor Dreadnought

So, I couldn't help myself and picked up one of the new dreadies because, well, who doesn't like a dreadie? First off the kit is pretty amazing from a posability stand point. The upper and lower legs are separate pieces, with just guiding tabs to limits positioning, whilst the power fist arm is similarly posable (the arms sadly have no horizontal rotation at the elbow, which limits poses a little). The fingers are four precast units, with a reasonably broad range of movement at the connection to the fist, whilst the box comes with enough components to make both the plasma and gatling cannon for the other arm; conceivably you can just swap them out when you please as they plug into the upper arm connector snugly enough to hold them without adhesive. The weapons on the body could also easily be magnetised to fit either the grenade launchers or the storm bolters should you wish.

For mine I cut the guide tab on the left knee (right leg looking at the picture) to allow for the stance he's in: only one foot comes with posable toes sadly.

Anyway, comments etc. always appreciated!

Ooh, good stuff, man! I'm a big fan of the little gold shoulder pad edge, it neatly ties the other two colours together. And that dread looks massive.

Thanks Meph. And yeah, the dread is huge: he's over twice the height of a Primaris marine and comes up to the chin of an Imperial Knight. I'll try and snap some comparison shots later so you can truly appreciate his scale.

Cool.

Oh, and I've also seen some pics on the interweb of the Redemptor with the sarcophagus armour left off. That looks very cool too actually. Opens up a whole new world for conversions.

I'm sure you've hit a newfound feeling of elation. I mean it's sometimes a while that a bunch of new models come onto the scene and folks like yourself are 1) not only into being motivated to paint them,but2) end up being paint very well to the point that the consumer who painted them is even more motivated and starts buying all sorts of stuff from the same line.Youve done that here you basically want to keep the mojo alive and keep that steady and delightful painting going.Im awaiting with angst .

Size isn't everything...

Thanks for the kind words guys!

@Meph: Yeah, the sarcophagus can be exposed (the white plate in the below picture is designed to articulate), but following a quick test the fit is so snug that it scraped the primer off at the hinge point - yay. You could leave it off completely I suppose, not sure how you would model the lower cover, I think it may leave a hole in the model.

@BAM: Yeah, feeling pretty motivated at the moment - finally have a chapter colour I'm happy with, I've got the stages down to a tee (just about anyway), and the new models are just the right size to be fun but not fiddly. Also, I've invested in some better quality brushes recently which has really helped.

@KruleBear: Hehe, thanks - I find white quite easy as I have some bottles of very light blue grey colours that work really well as a base tone.

As promised:

You'll have to excuse the makeshift background and terrible lighting, but it gets the general point across I feel.

Crikey, he is bigger than I thought.

Those flat panels look like they might be prime candidates for some freehand work. The chapter colours you're using are nice too. Understated and realistic.

Redemptor Dreadnought

Gah, need more time to paint!

Made some progress on the Redemptor - he's a big fella and takes a bit to paint. I've been doing him in sub assemblies and have finished the sarcophagus. Sadly, opening the front ablative armour scrapes the paint off of it - so i don't know if anyone will ever see it (not that its anything special mind you) - and the pipes seem very muted in this picture for some reason.

Still, having fun with it, but so, so many edges to highlight ;_;

Great job so far bud!!! Ill tell ya what I would do ide glue the sarcophagus shut . Take a nice photo of the inside and show it in your post when you eventually post this big guy to your gallery. Either way if it takes the paint off by using it no sense (if you think bout it rationally) in opening it and closing over and over.your painting will be most excellent when your done people will be impressed and not even care about opening the sarcophagus . :)

Thanks BAM. Yeah, I'm probably going to end up gluing it shut - it's meant for tabletop and I can't see one of these things striding the battlefield with it's vulnerable pilot exposed. Still, it's a shame to have the detail there and have it hidden away. Oh well.
