This is one of those misconceptions that won\'t die. The vast majority of Egyptian architecture was the result of extremely intricate planning and an organized workforce that was available during the natural floodcycle. When the Nile was over its banks the farmers and general populace were free to be employed by the government for these huge projects.

And let\'s not forget these people believe the Pharaoh was a god. If you want an efficient worker, pick a religious zealot over a slave any day.

They were also fed for the day (a big deal when your farm is covered in Nile flood waters) and many received prime burial space (very important for Egyptians at the time) in exchange. The government received the benefit of having a populace that was actively engaged/employed. The bit about religious zealotry is historically nearsighted. I would say that attitude (if indeed the common people really thought so) prevailed amongst ancient cultures. Religion was a part of everyday life.
