Aw, shucks. Meph, BAM, MAM, KruleBear... everyone else: you all are so unbelievably welcoming and positive. It's like these forums exist in some other parallel internet that has never been tainted with the stink of YouTube comments or drive-by Twitter sniping. I have no idea who any of you are, but oddly, you all make me want to push myself. I don't have anything else to say but Thank You!

Just a word of caution...we are all nuts around here. Some more than others! Lol ;)

Those bases look fantastic, just wondering what your using to get the texture on top of the cork? Some sort of Technical paint ? Cause it turned out really good...

Thanks, CC!

I covered the cork with GW Agrellan Earth to give it texture and also seal in the bits of cork to keep them from flaking off. Looking at the finished results, next time I won't spread the texture paint so evenly. The bases with more sculpting done in the texture stage look better I think. The left-most one in the first picture, for instance, has ridges that look like mineral seams in the stone which I really like.

I also invested in a static grass flockbox (from warpainter.net), so this was my first real outing on that. Every how-to I've seen says to use PVA, but that leaves a glossy appearance beneath the grass. Maybe it's just the brand of PVA I'm using. I found that just straight, undiluted, matt medium worked much better on the grass, so let's hope it stays stuck. So far so good.

Thanks everyone for the comments on the bases. I had a lot of fun with those and am already thinking about the next set. But first, I need to get some figures on these ones or I'll wind up just making bases all the time.

I think the front of the shields are done. I'm happy with them IRL, but the blowup pic... well, I feel like every heartbeat travels down my wrist and into the tip of the brush and the pics just show that off. Still trying to find that magic thinning strategy too. I keep bouncing between too gloopy and way too thin that it takes 20 coats to cover.

You'll get the hang of thinning paints after a while buddy. These are looking good and will be fantastic on the finished figures.

Finished up my second try at liberators. Similar color palette to my first, but better in almost every way. Some lessons from this effort:

1) The toothbrush-flick spray of white stars on the shields came out better than expected. But I washed the toothbrush and I guess it was still damp when I did the shoulder pauldrons, as the paint spread out more and created bigger, less defined blobby stars. Lesson: toothbrush needs to be bone dry.
2) I did these guys in pieces, shields and heads were separate until the very end. Made it much easier to paint. Lesson: get good at tracking what pieces go with what model if you're doing a bunch at once.
3) Starting to get the knack of edge highlighting really fine lines by the time I got to the belt on the back, which was one of the last things I painted. Enough to give me some encouragement that my eyes aren't too shot for this hobby.
4) I'm super happy with the bases. The electrostatic flockbox was a good investment. The grass is so fuzzy that I almost want to just cover my next model in it and make an army of Topiary Liberators™.
5) I tried to use the liquid greenstuff to gap fill the left shoulder pauldron seams. Mostly successful I think, but could use more work on keeping it really smooth. If it weren't for the stars, the seams would still be a little more apparent.

I've got two more liberators plus a Prime sitting in front of me to finish up the unit, so I'll happily accept any suggestions on improvements that I can make or changes to the colors to make those models even better. But I think I might shift gears for a bit and do either an aetherwing or a gryph-hound next just to mix it up.

Moving on to some Aetherwings. I'm really liking these bases since the birds only touch the top of the branches, so the entire base can be done up without having to worry about covering most of it with a model. Drybrushed some cork rocks and the trees. Next up is to add a few flowers and fill in most of the dirt with grass flock.

Okay, I need some opinions. I have some 2mm autumn colored static grass... Thinking about adding little tufts of this to the tips of the branches. Yea or Nea?

Also, going to add a touch more light lavender drybrushing to the rocks.

they look great so far. i think tufts on the tips of the branches will add more interest as shown. but once you have a mini on there you might not need it

Aetherwing #1 done. Will get better pics once the other two are complete. I went with a p3 coal black drybrush on the wingtips, which helped with my white feathers I think. But white turned out tougher to work with than I expected, so I might try something different on the other birds. I also managed to snap the ribbon part in half right at the end, so there's now a lump of glue right in the middle that I was afraid to sand down too much.
