I doubt changing it from a bland monochromatic embossed image to a highlighted, shaded and colored one would be \"defacing.\"

, this competition shouldn\'t be taken too seriously, I\'m just looking to see what people come up with. To make it international I say paint the lowest denomination of coin your country circulates. So in the US it\'s a penny... Uk a pence??, etc etc

I was talking to a friend about this over the weekend and he said he read a sign on one of those penny-smashing machines that said according to US law, it is only defacing of currency if you do it with evil intent.
So, I looked up the law.
[align=center] Whoever fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes, falsifies,
scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the mints of the United States,
or any foreign coins which are by law made current or are in actual use
or circulation as money within the United States ... Shall be fined.[/align]
18 United States Code § 331
So, as long as you don\'t do it \"fraudulently\" you\'re okay.
Incidentally, there\'s a related law that makes it illegal to alter the scales the mint uses when making coins.
