new citadel paints

ive been down and had a demo of the new paints today, have to say they do look good, the base white covered black in two thin coats and the dry paint range is so thick you can turn the pot upside down and works really well for dry brushing. the shades are nice and you can move it around for along time. texture can be built up and takes away the need to sand the base first. the only down side i can see so far is the shades will be different to the old washes so if you have some you like then stock up now because they are going. ive stocked up on mud and the blue as the shades are similary but they have a different look. all in all very good stuff.

Yeah, i watched Alan Merrit's vid on the new paint range. I think it will work out very well. For those of us who already use the range and can blend etc.. wont notice any difference other than the names while new people to painting and the hobby will have a wealth of great new paints to use. I have two friends who have been painting the old Space Hulk minis and they are really enjoying miniature painting as a hobby. With these new paints, they'll be able to more easily get down the ideas they have onto models as they still lack a little confidence when it comes to mixing up different paint colours.

Yes, and they are even better now.
There is no need to pile old pots at home, the new ones flow better into recesses (the paints, not the pots ;-).

yeah but why discontinue the colors that people like/need/want? smacks of disrespect towards customers. at least giving people ample warning that their colors were going off the shelves and let people stock up. Or give people a way to buy both. Nah, GW doesn't have that kind of regard for their customer. They are all about the newbie and don't give a damn about loyalty.

Because they want everyone to go out and buy there new amazing paints.

I'm personally switching over to vallejo for the main colours of my new army since I know they wont be made oop

What's so amazing about them? Overpriced. Short shelf life, and tiny, tiny portions. Don't get me started on the new 'thick' paint as a 'clever' product. How fast will these dry up I wonder, and how hard is it to use normal paint to drybrush? Pah. Other companies have larger ranges and don't mess with their customers' hobbying by discontinuing colors after a year or two. GW has no respect and no regard, it really does scream 'desperate for money' to me, and after the travesty that is Finecast, I'm not surprised. Yeah, the paints work, but so what? Other companies' paints also work, cheaper, longer and without the drama of your colors being discontinued. GW has lost the plot.

Its the same company that brought us finecast the best thing to ever hit the miniatures world so of course its "amazing" lol

I agree 100% with you, though I do have to admit that I may buy one or two colours just because I like the shades and I cba mixing them up, averland sunset for instance. But it, pour it into dropper bottle, use crappy pot for custom ink washes

I think that GW with its paints should stick to focusing on the newbie. Not because It's necessarily fair to long term customers, but because most of the better painters out there don't use GW anyway. There is already enough of a reason not to use GW paints unless you're a newbie, and don't know anything else. Especially with the increased quality and better price of Reaper or Vallejo. So, focusing on the newbie, with its paints, is probably just what GW needs.

yes gw paint sucks, bad quality, bad price etc. nobody who paints competitively or for high quality display minis would ever think of using GW.

I tried them out at the store today as well. I'm a big fan. Right now my collection is a hodge-podge of paints many of them 8+ year old RMS which are mostly dry.

I went with the new Citadels because I really liked how smooth they went on and how well they covered, and they have less overall colors while still basically having all you need. I feel like I'd be overwhelmed with a fresh set of 200+ RMS colors.

Whoa, a lot of GW hate there!

Feedback from people who have tried the new paint is positive, in fact I've not yet read any negative comments on them other than people not being happy with the changes (no actual criticism of the paint). Increasing the colours in the high pigment range is a really positive step and should actually go a long way to eliminating the problem people have with coverage of some colours. As I said on another post, nobody can really comment on the shelf life of the new paint until we've had them sat on a shelf for a while (a "time will tell scenario").

I must admt i'm annoyed with the new paints. They have discontinued my most used shades for my space wolves army. I have spent 20 hours painting each individual model and so far am half way done. I am now going to either have to strip and start over or have miss matched colours but after spending so long trying to acheive perfection haveing miss matched colours is not an option. I'm sure I'm not the only person they have done this to though.

I can't wait till i next go in a shop and have an enthusiatic sales person trying to tell me how good they are. They will get a reality check. (delivered politly of course, its not thier fault after all)

you have a millions(ok only 7 or 8 :) ) of options:
1. use Coat'd'Arms (names are different, the original citadel paints were made by them)
2. Use VGC (lately the quality of these has dropped a lot(change is between 2005 and 2011), so I'd rather stick with GW paints nowdays than with the game-colors)
3. stock up a lot of needed paints before saturday
4. ebay the needed paints
5. buy the discontinued paints from other, non-gw, stores, they'll probably have a discount on them to free up shelf space
6. shadow-grey = fang , swgrey = fenrisian grey , try them first in the store to be sure.
7. difference in shade doesn't really matter, it's differs a bit from batch to batch independent from producer, so even if there wasn't this change nothing would guarantee that the shades are ok.

(8. I have no idea how much paint you use for a figure, but I know that a 17ml vallejo was enough for about 6000pt of SM including some vehicles. so if you have 1-2 pots of the needed colors now it should be more than enough paint the army to full)

and yes, except for some choices(I see no point in the "dry" and "glaze" line) I was pretty impressed how good the new paints behaved.

Strip them all. OR have a look here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart

and buy the comparable color you need from another manufacturer.

I hope the new formula is as good as the old for display work. I don't need coverage I need smoothness. Kommando Khaki for example, beautiful for layering but rubbish coverage.

The separation into base and layering is very promising in that respect.

guess it will have to be stripping them. I did look at valaho game colour equivelents in the past and they do not patch perfectly. I will look at others companies but I will not pin too many hopes.

Its just annoying, allot of hours of free time spread over a year or more, for the most part wasted.

Hey, come on! There are bucketloads of the old GW paint out there you cannot be seriously contemplating stripping them? Are you?

just stock up on what you need, the shelf live will be fine if you don't open them untill needed. who knows how long they have been in the pot before we buy anyway
