Musical Squiggoth

I was messing around with preliminary ideas for my squiggoth at the moment.

Yes, I know I am bouncing around between projects like a kangaroo on acid, but it\'s just the way I seem to work. I don\'t mean to clutter the forum with so many posts about so many different things - they will all one day be done. I\'m probably just working on this one because I managed to get a pair of the speakers I needed today.

I was planning on putting up my pictures and stuff in a post and detailing how I was going to put the speakers in before I realized it would be stupid without.. well, sound, as proof of concept.

So I have decided to saddle astride the wave of the future and make a video post!

Enjoy my sexy, dulcet nerd voice as I get this idea started.

I am a monumental idiot.

Somehow I can operate power tools like a drill press and such just fine. I was dremelling out the back of the squiggoth\'s neck for a speaker mount.

Of course, when I was done dremelling, I took my coat off and started shaking the pounds of resin dust off it. Shaking it vigorously so as to remove all of the resin dust, I managed to whip the rather large zipper around at a high speed and directly into my right eye, giving me quite a nice shiner.

So, to recap:

Power tools? A-OK!
Zippers? FAIL

Anyway, here is the next step of youtube videos. :D

It cut me off at the very end when I was talking, but you get the idea. I\'m going to have to bitz order some goff rokkers, I think.

Cool idea. Are you going to plug it in to your computer every time you want some ork music or are you going to get a mp3 player?

Vince,

When James Brown came on, I just about wet myself I was laughing so hard.

I\'m thinking you need to download the theme from \"Jaws\" for this. 1812 Overture and the ride of the Valkyries as well......

Clearly the second speaker needs to be rectal.....

The switch could be some nasty looking orc lever up in the howdah.

This is an awesome idea. Love the videos.

That is class! Also I like the way you have grasped one of the most used tools of our age and made a use of it for your hobby, I think you are going to be the first of many.

Also the zipper in the eye..... OUCH!

Very nice. Bonus points for presentation, and yet more bonus points for creativity of the project itself. Should be a rockin Squiggoth indeed.

Of course you realise you have to find a way to make it dance too lol

Awesome idea and a great WiP method too - it would be great to see some painting WiPs on Youtube so perpetual learners like me can see exactly how it\'s supposed to be done. Good luck with the trailblazing

Okay the project is pretty cool, a bit corny, but still pretty cool. Would love to see the faces at a Games Day when you suddenly turn that thing on.

The best part about this whole thing is the presentation! What an awesome idea! We need more and more YouTube WIP threads!

Great Idea! This would be something I would try as well, had it not been thought of first by someone else.

As a speaker builder (more than one hobby) I thought first about getting better sound quality from it. Yeah, cheap iPod speakers - the way to go. I don\'t know if the squggoth\'s body is already hollow or not (I\'m not lucky enough to have one, yet) so this may not work. Assuming it\'s hollow and you have some kind of hatch/removable part to get at the batteries and the mp3 player, try to make all of the seals (head, legs, secret compartment hatch) nearly air tight. Use a rubber seal if possible around the secret hatch.

This will help your sound quality and give it more low end as this sealed internal area will make the sqiggoth act like a bass chamber and of course, that\'s what\'s realy missing on any cheap speaker is low end sound. Although I wouldn\'t expect trunk shaking bass, it should sound a bit better.

Good luck and I\'ll be watching your progress on Youtube/CMoN!

Very ingenious.

In addition to marching songs, and james brown anthems, I hope you put some roaring gozilla-esqu sounds too...

I have been messing around with video editors.

My production values have gone up dramatically. :D

I have also filmed myself using a tripod this time around, so you may all grimace at my twisted visage.

And oh yes, there is a montage.

jamsessionein, man, your threads were always good but this is incredible... my sister thinks ive lost the plot, she walks in and im sitting here pissing myself laughing at a squiggoth... in her eyes a plastic monster and i just couldnt describe why it was so funny... montage was excellent!!!!lol

But seriously, i think your on to something here with the video WIP, your going to be an internet superstar!!! and its brilliant seeing exactly how your doing what your doing, keep it up man... its fantastic!!

PS. Please send a cheque to AsgardUK London England for £5.00 and you too can be a fully paid up member of the jamsessionein Fan club:beer:

Can anyone say \"Home improvement\"??

Where\'s Tim Allen?! :)

Dude- you\'re like me - you never finish anything! lol

I had a similar idea to this, but my idea was to use one of those chip they put into those annoying greetings cards - but I guess now with the dropping prices of MP3s that a cheap 64Mb player is looking increasingly viable :)

(Also - those chips need to be programmed - with looked to be uber expensivo :( )

You should have a list of possible ideas for the playlist :)
Keeping in mind of course, that the tunes should be suitably Orky...

Therefore, unfortunately, I\'m not sure Wagner\'s Ride of the Valkyries would fit...

Maybe something like Ace of Spades or something... I\'ll have to edit this post later once I\'m thought of some more! hehe

As always - stupidly excited at another of your insane projects. lol

I have hit something of a speed bump.

While the first speaker will definitely be mounted in the throat, if just for the novelty of having it actually roar, the second speaker is posing a problem as there\'s really nowhere I can see that it will fit.

I\'ve considered perhaps leaving the speaker off, but that seems like a halfway solution that would end up being dissapointing - just one in the throat isn\'t nearly the volume I crave!

The only place I\'ve been able to figure out that might work is under the howdah, pointing up - by cutting away a section of flooring and putting a mesh overtop to replace the flooring and allow sound out - but I\'m not so happy with that idea just yet because I also wanted to put the switches and controls in the howdah and a speaker would end up blocking most of that.

Any ideas, fellas?

How about creating some sort of Orkified speaker tower that you could attach onto the howdah and mount the speaker there - as thought the orks themselves had constructed it? :p
