1. You paint too fast, I hate you.

2. Love the squigs, that is a cool sculpt and you did a great job on it.

3. The Jabberwoky thingy looks cool too, but I would have love to see some gross slobber or ropes of drool hanging off that tongue :D

Yeah, I'm going to count myself in the assembly column of like/dislike right now. Have lots of fun putting them together, but get frustrated with the painting. Assembly is nice because you can pick it up or put it down without a lot of getting ready or cleaning up. I find I need to block off an hour to get any painting done, but can do some assembly if I've got ten minutes to spare.

Probably just need to paint more often.

And 666 minis in a year?! That's nearly 2 a day man! I think I've managed 2 in six months. *sigh*

Probably just need to paint more often.

damn dude! That was hella fast! Very nice work on the squigs and the jabber. I'd say they're perfectly pitched for an ebay sale. not tooooooo detailed and time consuming, but still better than your average schmo would do for his army paint job.

Also, to chip in on the building/painting discussion - I go through phases, but I'd say building minis is funner that painting them. Converting them, (when the mood takes me) is even more so. I'm painting 10 banshees just now, and it's starting to do my head in and I'm only on number 3! I tend to do squads one at a time, as having done the assembly line thing before, I find it feels a bit like taking a cheese grater to my soul and is best avoided.

Keep up the good work. If you can manage 666 minis in a year I will be picking my jaw up off the floor - I'd be doing damn well to manage 66. Ach, who am I kidding - 6 is pretty good for me :D

Byronic - I'm going to get a blog up in 2012, where I'll be challenging myself to paint 666 minis over the year and charting the progress. Plan on doing various tutorial type bits then, and will no doubt go into more detail on airbrushing. I'm by no means an expert though, still learning a lot myself and playing around with methods and techniques. It all started with the Miniature Mentor speed painting video though, and I'd seriously recommend looking at that to get inspired by the underpainting, zenithal lighting approach.

Favourite model out of this lot is the Mangler Squigs. A bit of a downer to put together, but they have the sort of comedy character you don't get so much in GW stuff these days. I have the new scenery built and primered. Hoping to get going on that tomorrow.

Cheers James, I've actually got that video, however my decrepit old laptop can't cope with the quality :( I'll see if I can nab someone's superior technology for a bit to re-watch it, it is the glazes that I have the issue with in terms of trying to replicate something similar, they never coe out quite as smoothly as I'd like.

Models look great, we're sharing the GW Blog today, although I think my Manse is up there more due to speed in comparison with the quality of yours ^_^

Gaaah! I'm still not finding the right kind of pace with this painting thing. My dad came over today and the day has gone. I am rubbish! It's odd seeing people saying how fast I am, because if I'd been putting in the amount of time I should have so far, I would have twice the amount done. Well, the plan now is to have the Eldar sorted for Thursday and the Cygor and Ghorgon finished for Sunday.

666 models is very doable if I just start doing proper working hours. Note to self - do proper working hours!

me_in_japan - Yup, I know my stuff isn't showcase standard, but as long as they are striking, well painted and up quickly, that's going to keep me happy. Every so often I'll do a more time consuming job to keep me from burning out.

I think my most painful prep-period of late was the Grey Knights. Character model, 2 Dreadknights, 10 Terminators and 10 Marines in an evening after managing to pick them up from my GW store on the Friday a little ahead of time.

It's a great vid, so if you can, nab the tech!

Ah, GW Blog fame. Always nice. Your Skullvane Manse looks good, don't be so down on yourself! A totally solid paint job and you got it done good and quick, which I heartily approve of! :D

A little bit of feedback that could help if you are using an airbrush for scenery. I tend to basecoat it, then use thinned inks in the airbrush, and spray them in a somewhat controlled way into cracks and recesses. Don't be scared of colours as well as browns, they add lovely nuances. Just keep it thin and subtle, and if it goes on too heavy anywhere you can just use the air blast to spread it around. Once you've done that, load up a lighter, highlight colour of the basecoat, and from above put down a gentle spray to give the lighting effect. Drybrush with a very light load of an even lighter tone. Finally, do some more thin washes to blend it in a bit more. It's very quick and looks very good. :)

Thanks loads for the tips bud, do you just dilute your GW washes with water or thinner for the 'glazing' stage?

By the way I'd pop a 'As seen on Gw's blog' in the little 35p extra subtitle box on eBay, maybe a link in the listing or something as well. I'm sure it'll catch people's attention when thinking about bidding, I've shamelessly put a link in mine but I can't edit the subtitle, the bids went up though, whether it's to do with that I've no idea!

Yup, just regular old water. I got myself a big load of purified water when I first got my airbrush, but rarely find myself using it. I'm one of the messiest painters you'll probably ever meet. It freaks me out seeing some of the amazingly clean environments other painters work in, and how they have all their equipment pristine the whole time. I mean, my airbrush is really good, but even that is splattered with paint and whatnot. My Windsor and Newton Series 7 brushes I got - trashed! I guess we all have certain ways of working that we are at our highest functional peak in. Mine is disorganised messy chaos!

I used to mention being featured in the blog on my eBay auctions, but I got email contact from their legal department. They asked me to not link to their page, which is fine and I don't. They also said I can't mention that I'm featured / have been featured, which is utter nonsense and utterly unenforcable. But, if I do keep on mentioning it, they could get pissy and stop putting my stuff on the blog, so rather than loose out on that potential audience then seeing my things on eBay, I play nice. So, watch out for their crazy legal bods!

Damned manflu! It broke me. It hit towards the tail end of last week and I felt grottier and grottier from that point on. I managed to push through and get my dinner party done on Friday night, and then, once folks had gone, puke for the first time in about 5 years, then went to the pub on Saturday because I'd promised the missus we'd head out. I drank a whole pint of tap water. :( Sigh! Generally in a very sorry state indeed.

Tonight was set to be a chilled evening of Skyrim, which I have somehow managed to not play for days, but the sound of my Xbox being switched on was apparently resonating through the floor and giving my girlfriend a headache, so I thought sod it, I'll try and get an entry to a painting comp done in the four hours before the closing time (possibly, they haven't been too specific about when it's done). Well, I'm quite pleased I couldn't do the gaming thing actually. My first showcase type mini for years and I seem to have gotten quite a bit more adept at putting paint down where it should be than I used to.

3 and a half hours or there abouts so far. I'm really pleased with how it's coming out, but would certainly appreciate feedback. And I've noticed the whopping great mould line on the backpack and will be dealing with it!

At least it was manflu! I can't imagine the effect if it had been girlflu...

I'm liking the mini. Nice weathering, and an interesting figure. May I ask what it is? I dont recognise it. My only critique would be that it seems a bit flat. I mean, it needs a bit more pop, ping, pizzaz. You know what I mean :)

It's quite a funky model from Grindhouse Games called Hans the Hunter - http://www.grindhousegames.com/products/hans-the-hunter#feature

Hard to resist going for a Bioshock vibe with the paint scheme, so I'm trying to get a bit of a rendered look to the model. Could you elaborate a bit more on where you think it's looking a bit flat please me_in_japan? The only bit I'm considering fully finished so far is the claw. The helmet, skin and bionic leg are all close, but needing some more work. The rest is just base colours. Is there a particular area needs more pop? On the claw I've tried to keep it subtle for sure, with the painted in reflective effect to try and give the surface a bit of sheen, but I thought it was popping ok to be honest. Keen to get this one spot on though, so pleased to have some constructive criticism. :)

Not painting this guy anything like as fast as usual! I have got a bit more done on Hans, but still some work to do. Trying to not rush him. Have also started playing around with some basing ideas, but nothing is quite working out as I'd like yet.

aha, sorry - that last post of mine was terribly vague. my apologies for that. What I meant was it needs more focal points of interest, little details to draw your eye. However, having seen that it is in fact not by any means finished yet, you can safely belay that critique for now. Your latest pic is looking much, much better. The damage on the shoulder pad is really pushing my buttons. The bit that Id say looks in need of more details/weathering/rust etc is the metal leg, but I daresay that it's on your to-do list. Keep up the good work. I love a nice scratchy grubby looking mini, i do :)

Hopefully it's getting a bit more interesting for you now me_in_japan. I'm thinking of adding some extra weathering with pigments once I'm finished with the painting. Thank you for the critique. :)

He's a quality model BPI, but be prepared for a wee bit of a nightmare putting him together.

More progress now, doing the back detail.

Hans is finished. Nice to take a bit longer on a model, but I still find that if I'm not getting things finished off in a reasonable abmount of time I start to get a bit demotivated and itching to move onto something else. Probably between 8 and 9 hours work here, which for a mini of this size is practically unheard of for me!
