Got a votey link up for the Ettin - http://www.coolminiornot.com/292864 - snipe away! ;)

Marjed - Iryllith is going to be a turquoise colour, the greeny yellow is just underpainting (not to be confused with underpanting, the act of thieving pants!) that adds depth and pre-highlights as well as some interesting tone to come through.

Elric2k - Glad you like the Ettin. The Shadow Spectres are really nice models. The only thing I am less keen on is that they all somehow managed to swoop over a spikey rock at the same time!

Jasper - Funny you say it's a unique style, because it's totally not my usual approach to painting, so I must have kinda succeed in learning something new. I found myself imagining I was at Weta Workshop painting up a suit of Urak Hai skin or something similar as I painted the Ettin. I think I felt I could apply a slightly different treatment to it, what with the surface texture. I'm back to a more standard approach on the Eldar. I may take you up on the Aspect Warriors at some point, but not yet. I have far too much on my painting desk just now. Cheers though. :)

Well, I have internet for now. :fingers-crossed: I love the colors Lono! Really very nice! But yes, I see what you mean about struggling with seams as I can spot a couple. ;) Seams still drive me nuts but only because I don't see them until after I get paint on 'em.:p Even when I prime gray it I can't catch them all.

Ettin's looking great, GW linked it on their facebook as well today so it seemed that they liked it - congratulations :)

Really looking forward to seeing what you do with the Shadow Spectres, the amount of time you put into your pre-shading is impressive, no wonder the final mini's look so good, it's great to see WiPs to see the prepping effort and stages.

Byronic - Ah so they did, that's groovy. Will have to continue pimping my stuff on their Flickr.

Have some other stuff sorted, but my camera's on the blink right now so haven't been able to do fresh photos. Need to get it sorted quick sharp. Hoping it's just the battery that's buggered.

It's never easy! :)

i think the weta approach is limited to certain types of textured minis, it wouldnt work on the new plastic cygor for example (only a blowtorch would, terrible kit) but wherever you can use it totally go for it, forgeworld sculpts and maybe even a bust would suit it admirably.
well done on the workshop post, how does that happen, they just see the pic?
aspect warriors would be a gift of course!

I was with you on the Cygor hate at first, but have warmed to it a bit. I don't think it's so much the kit that's terrible as the 'Eavy Metal paint job not really doing it any favours. Having built one up this weekend and a Ghorgon too, I'm a lot more excited to paint them than I was when I first saw pictures. The Jabberslythe though, that thing is pure evil. It just doesn't fit. Had to do so much filling and quite a bit of melting and reposing too. even some pinning on wing spines. :(

My camera's still out of action, so excuse the mobile phone shot of these Mangler Squigs. A very cool model that I'm already rather enjoying painting. I have the base colours down and now it's time to start adding in the finer detail, but I may start laying down some colour on the Beastmen monsters and Jabberslythe instead for now. The Squigs weren't as bad to construct as I thought they might be, but some of the chains are far too fragile and one lot were a bit miscast, so have had to be trimmed shorter.

Cant follow you on the 2 beastmen giants. Still think they look awfull after seing them painted irl.

The mangler looks cool, although the osl eyes ruin it for me. They just dont fit that mini at all, yellow beady eyes would be a better choice

I was going for the glowing eyes thing because I imagine them eating mushrooms in the dark caves, and it gives them their totally maniacal temper and unusual size. Also, I love the thought of glowing eyes looming from the dark, then wildly bouncing towards terrified foes! This is just the prep for them, not the finished job, so they will be toned down a bit and made more detailed.

But, I've been getting the basecolours and shading done on the Beastmen monsters rather than doing more the squigs. Highlights needed to give them some pop, but I like how they are turning out so far. And my camera is up and running again after a fresh delivery of a non-busted up battery. :D

True brown beastmen are the bomb and i like the shade....The models look better then i thought....but still awfull. That 4 armed looks like a 13 year old giant conversion. Too skinny and the arms are waaaayyyyy to short, he would have to crawl to hit things.

And it looks like you have missed a few joints that need filling, the head of the ghorgon and the left leg on both of them

Oh man I really dig those mangler squigs. I much prefer the glowing green eye look to the run of the mill yellow eyes. Although I hate the beastmen monster sculpts, your paint thus far on both of them is outstanding! How did you get your squigs eyes to look toglowy? They really do look like there are lights in there, not paint :p

OK, so I seem to be splitting opinion with the Squig eyes - it's good to be a bit controversial I suppose. ;) Can't claim any particularly mad skills for the eyes, just some reasonably careful work and a bit of a deft touch with the airbrush trigger.

Think I'll push ahead with the bestmen chaps tomorrow. Yeah, that split down the centre of the Ghorgon looks way more severe now I see it photographed. Not so sure I can spot anything too major on the leg though. Unfortunately, with me doing my models to a tight timeframe, the odd mould line does sneak through here and there, but I do my best to prep them.

I should have taken a picture of the Jabberslythe before I started painting it so you could see how much green stuff I used filling gaps in that monstrosity, but I've made a basic start to the painting of it now.

That's some lovely disgusting colours you've got going there. The airbrush shading looks great on the models.

Looking great, I really like how you've gone with the skin on the big fellas!

Is there any chance of a break-down/any tutorials you've used etc of how you go about your airbrush shading? Of course a lot of it will just be practice, it's obvious you're a dab-hand in terms of knowledge of where light would fall on a model etc. I'm about to paint an Ogre army over christmas and any tips/break down would be great, as I thought your O.K stuff was spot on.

What's your favourite model to paint of the batch you're working on this fortnight then? If you've got a Skullvane Manse anywhere painting it is funnnnn, finished mine this weekend and it was a blast (construction is not quite so fun...).

Cheers,

Byron

There must be something seriously wrong with me. I like painting and all, but for me, the real joy is in the building and prep. I find I get bored easily when I am painting, especially if I am doing a unit of 5 or more. That's when I break out a different kit/set of figures and start building. Maybe I should seek professional help?

I hear ya bud. Cutting & glueing always seems like more fun. Well, for rank & file troops in any case. The base colours are OK to do, but then to paint in the black... my motivation goes out the door and it's a chore until that's done. The details after that are OK again though. But painting that black... black, blààààck!
It's just a matter of stubbornly sticking to it until it's done.

Well, today's been an odd one. Got up and for an hour or so was going great guns with the painting. Then I had a few chores to get sorted, and somehow I've ended up faffing in the kitchen preparing stocks, confit tomatoes and a chestnut and chocolate slice type dessert for bleeding ages. It did all need sorting, because I'm having some friends over for my first ever full-on, living with girlfriend, proper dinner party on Friday, but still annoyed at not getting painting finished. I'm gonna go at finishing the Mangler Squig over the next few hours as the gf is out this evening, and then try and sort the rest of the work on the Jabberslythe too.

Can't believe anyone out there enjoys constructing models. It drives me mad. Mind you, I do more at a time than most people. I will literally be chopping things from sprues and cleaning the parts for days at a time on occasions, and my floor usually looks like it's snowed slivers of plastic. Painting is so much more fun. If anyone fancies making the models for me I'm sure we could come to some sort of arrangement! ;)

Byronic - I'm going to get a blog up in 2012, where I'll be challenging myself to paint 666 minis over the year and charting the progress. Plan on doing various tutorial type bits then, and will no doubt go into more detail on airbrushing. I'm by no means an expert though, still learning a lot myself and playing around with methods and techniques. It all started with the Miniature Mentor speed painting video though, and I'd seriously recommend looking at that to get inspired by the underpainting, zenithal lighting approach.

Favourite model out of this lot is the Mangler Squigs. A bit of a downer to put together, but they have the sort of comedy character you don't get so much in GW stuff these days. I have the new scenery built and primered. Hoping to get going on that tomorrow.

I like the glowy eyes on the giant squigs :good:

So far you've made all of these recent models look better than the GW promo shots, well done ;) Not that I'm sold on any though. Interesting to see how few skulls there are on the beast-giant, I've wanted them to be optional, particularly on plastic kits, for a long time.

A mini-prepping service is something I've wondered about before. From a customer point of view that is, I far prefer painting to modelling :)

Cheers, B.
