Green Stuff, Friend or foe?

lurch:

hope you\'ve gotten that tooth fixed up. it may seem to be holding out w epoxy putty but a nice new case of dental caries could be building up under the impromptu restoration due to microleakage and entry of bacteria and you WOULDNT EVEN SEE IT cos of the whitestuff! more hassle than its worth..

amalgam resto isnt all that bad. so if mercury is nasty stuff why do we use mercury? its an amalgam! we need the mercury as a solvent for the copper and tin and silver to form a soft, squishy plastic alloy so we can pack it into the cavity; the silver and copper and tin components dont exactly come soft or mixed in their \'elemental\' cast state. and as the amalgam condenses in the cavity the mercury settles to the top of the amalgam and is scraped off as the dentist carves some shape into the restoration. removing the mercury-heavy amalgam portion. sure, leaching may occur, but its not much more than what you get naturally from your usual diet. the ones who are more in danger are the dentists, and thats only if they like to buy their mercury separately and mix without gloves!

I knew a photographer who spent years developing his own photos, fingers constantly in the various solutions because there is no need to wear gloves is there? Besides, gloves get in the way...
One day however, he developed a violent reaction to the chemicals as his tolerance had dropped to zero. His whole body turned into one suppurating sore, even the wearing of clothes was agony. Of course he couldn\'t even go near a darkroom without his condition deteriorating so he couldn\'t earn a living. He killed himself.:(

That does happen. Also if you \"mouth\" your brushes.. eg wet the tip in your mouth the same thing can happen. Alot of artists do mouth their brush. :( myself included. I just found out so I am going to stop.

I mouth my brushes, use bare hands when working with green stuff, had dangly toys in my crib, stuck a metal object in a electric socket, chewed on lead based paint, went to a grade school that was later renovated for having asbestoes insulation, traveled well over the posted speed limit on numerous occasions...... on and on and on....

Lawyers are like anyone else, they want to make a buck. If there is a blame, then it\'s on a system that allows people to sue for any reason regardless of merit. In the US there was a recent lawsuit I heard was pending for an inmate in jail because his ice cream was not cold enough, it was melting when served. Folks lets face it, we live in a world that rewards people for being victims of their own stupidity and who seek to place the blame for their action or inaction on the fault of another. It seems there is a growing body of persons who do not wish to take responsibility for their own actions. In my line of work I see it all the time, and deal with lawyers and attorneys almost on a daily basis.

There are legitimate reasons to sue other persons and or business entities for punitive compensation. Faulty products, failure to disclose a known health hazard etc. For example the recent incident with a particular brand of tire put on sport utility vehicles and trucks.

Okay I\'m all better now had to get that out.

I found working with green stuff the only problem I had was where the green touches the blue, I would get lumps in the mix. After I cut the area out of the strip then I found that eliminated that problem. I purchased some white/blue stuff and found that the blue stuff had hardened and was very difficult to mix with the white stuff. I figure it was probably an issue with the product sitting on the shelf too long before I purchased it. I picked up a set of 3 dental picks at the local hardware store for about fifty cents each. I found a set of sculpting tools at a craft store for about five dollars. My scultping has a long way, but for filling gaps adding detail and conversion work I find the tools and green stuff more than adequite.

Come to think of it, I\'m finding it harder to see now that twenty years ago. I wonder if it has to do with painting these mini ???

Time to call an attorney lol!!!!!

Green stuff is not inherently evil or inherently good for that matter. It\'s like a gun or katanna, they don\'t leap up and start hacking at people, but if you hand it to an idiot you have one less idiot and one more in jail with a 7\' tall guy named Bubba.

I think It\'s probably illegal in some country\'s because they somehow see it as a threat to people who use it. They said the same thing about my toy radioactive isotope, but we turned out okay. Although we did have to get that third arm removed, but we have three more where that come from.

Foe, foe, foe!

We hates it yessss.. Not nice to little minipainter Angela. We haaatesss it !

(we wishes we was better with it indeed)

i have used milliput for sculpting. i prefer greenstuff as milliput can be watered down and i find it gets too sloppy. it\'s also a lot easier to mix greenstuff well.

i did read about mixing the two once. gave it a try but don\'t remember what it was like. will have to give it another trial.

i don\'t remember who said about the green stuff getting lumpy (sorry) but you can now buy it in separate strips from http://www.heresyminiatures.com/ and it\'s pretty cheap too (and excellent service). hope that helps

I prefer green stuff to milliput. Milliput is fine for bulking out areas but when you want to put in detail then I find that green stuff is the way to go.

Besides green stuff is less messy so in my penny\'s worth its a friend.

It\'s quite obvious to me :D We numbered his arms at birth. It was arm number three (hence, the third arm) that had to be removed. The arm itself was okay, but the fish on the end of it was begining to rot. ;)

Then he should have let go!lollollol

(thinking of Homer getting his arm caught in a vending machine because he wouldn\'t let go of the can, or trapping monkeys with bananas in cages)

@LuckyCharms -
While I agree with much of your rant on lawyers and lack of personal responsibility, I would give a word of caution. Just because lawyers may in some cases lack ethics and just because people are quick to sue, does not mean that all caution should be thrown to the wind.

There are good reasons NOT to suck on brushes (though I, too, have been known to do it). Paints in general contain I whole bunch of noxious substances. Just because lead has been taken out of most of them does NOT mean that they are safe to eat :|~ Go look at \"artist\'s\" paints sometime where they are actually called by what they are. There are cadmiums and bariums and cobalts and a number of other unsavory items. Just because it has a friendly sounding name like \"goblin green\" or \"bad moon yellow\" or whatever does not mean its any safer. There are documented cases of artists dieing from afflictions caused by exposure to these substances. My mind is slipping (probably from too much pthalocyanine ingestion;) ) so I can\'t remember which it was, but it was either Cezanne or Manet that died from cadmium poisoning.

I agree that people need to take personal responsibility for their actions. However, one part of that should be an informed decision. ie - I\'ve known all my life that smoking is unhealthy, yet I continue to smoke. That\'s fine. That\'s my decision. I also sometimes suck my brush tips. That\'s fine, too. I figure the cigarettes will get me long before the cadmium does lol

You sir are in fact correct on the brush sucking. In 1995 I worked in a paint manufacturing facility that produced industrial coatings. Everything from water based primers to acetone based clear coats. I worked there for five years and I tell you if you open a can of paint and it smells, It\'s even worse at the production end. There are many noxious/ highly toxic chemicals and products that go into the production and formulation of both industrial and household paints.

While in the Us Army I attended a 2 week school where I rmember being told a story from one of the instructors about a company that made clocks. They used a paint to make the hands glow on the arms of the clocks. Employees were paid to paint these arms with brushes, and in order to get a real fine point on the brush, you guessed it, they were told to mouth the brush. As you well could guess the paint contained a radioactive isotope that caused the paint to glow in the dark. Many of the employees suffered from health complications as a result of this.

I gave up cigarettes a couple of years ago, except for the occasional back slide where I\'m reminded that they don\'t taste as good as I remember them to. I\'ve been trying to be aware during my painting sessions not to mouth my brushes, but old habits are hard to break. I\'ll find myself doing it without realizing. I\'ll stop sooner or later and I\'m sure that I\'ll have the occasional unconcious backslide but I know it\'s unhealthy :(.

There\'s a terrible pun here about artists \'dyeing\' from paint exposure, but I\'m not going to touch it.
