gorb's paint & putty pony show

I'm revisiting a bust I started in July 2019. The way I ended up messing up, then retouching and finally leaving the bust never felt good, so it is time for a remodel.

Here is the original finished model. It is based on a drawing by T zzzzz青椒右司], which I tried my
best to model in sculpey:

sJj4g4Ll.jpg

I messed that up the moment I tried to prime it, since the primer kinda melted the sculpey and I just did not have the heart to go and restore the surface texture. In
the end I smoothed as much of it as I could, added some more details and called it my Sister of Battle power amour:

0IpjKVxl.jpg

As a bunch of people have commented, the armor ended up way too large for the poor little girl stuck inside it. The shoulders are too broad, and it just looks suss.
Initially I kinda glossed over this, and thought I could just ignore it, and maybe if I just willed it enough people would be able to look past it. But to be honest I
saw it too, and I just didn't want to admit it to myself.

So here I am in 2021, and I've decided to completely rework this model, and hopefully bang out something that is at least plausibly in scale...

First, I made a new head, which is slightly larger and features some augmentation. Here they are, side by side, with the new
(slightly larger) head on the left:

9mK7w7pl.jpg

It might not look like much, but the effect is immediately apparent when the new head is placed in the suit:

i3RbHaUl.jpg

Then I started on the armor itself. I realised that I would have to give a better indication of the shouders of the model, and added these rounded shoulder
shapes that you can also see in the photo above.
Here are some more shots of that:

NGpGWPpl.jpg

VpE2msNl.jpg

The rear of the armor is where I had a lot of trouble figuring out what to do originally. Here is what I started with, which you can see is super top heavy
and weird:

1Ghrglvl.jpg

Instead of trying to improve what I had done previously, I stripped
it all down (lots of drilling, sanding and grinding, and lots of dust) and started adding a different layout, with some mirroring of the elements on the front of the bust.

wlXoFghl.jpg

The surface needed way more texture than it ended up with, given the scale of the bust.
Taking some inspiration from Nikolay Georgiev and his crazy good detailing, I thought I'd add
some weird little plugs all along the armor, started layering detail a fair bit more, and creating smoother curved yet still hard surfaces.

Finally, here is where the armor is at now:

More to come, stay tuned!

Final product looks impressive, wish I could persevere the way you have. As soon as things aren't as planned, my projects get stripped/scrapped and I start from scratch.

Others might have just scrapped it - not you :)
New project launched - staying tuned!!!

Thanks man :)

Thank you, I'm glad you like it. I really want this piece to look good, so I don't mind putting it on the back burner if things don't go well. It clears the mind, gives me a fresh start when I look at it again.
That way I'm also not so attached to the older work, and more likely to rip out pieces that obviously don't fit.

Nice work

/k

Thanks dude!

What a beauty! If you cast copies, I'd buy one!

Why thank you, that's quite a compliment!
I do plan on making some resin copies, I will let you know when I have some available.

I have been super busy at work the last couple of weeks, and have not managed to post much here (or elsewhere, for that matter).
I'm also going in for a small shoulder operation tomorrow, so I don't have anything to show now, nor will I in the next week, maybe more while the shoulder heals.
Will be keeping an eye on the forum though, so keep up the good work people! :D

Thank you so much my friend. I am home and recovering. The operation went very well, so hopefully I will be able to continue working & hobbying in no time.

I did make some progress on the power armor bust prior to going under the knife, but didn't get a chance to post any of it.

Here are some shots of the bust, and bust + suit:

I re-added the helmet that I (almost) threw away.

I've also added a shoulder cannon that can be mounted to the suit:

The idea is that I will make molds out of the individual pieces, and I should be able to kitbash a couple
of different looks and feels from this one model.

I'm glad to hear that :) Take care and give it time to recover properly. I once strained my shoulder lifting weights and just made it worse when I went back to training too soon.

To the bust ->

Wow this is really amazing. When tried sculpting I didn't even manage to get a somewhat proportional mannequin.

I don't know if you still want to make corrections at this stage but my points of criticism would be her left eye socket and cheeks. The eye socket looks a bit too broad and the left cheek a bit flat. Also on the left side, the temple is facing a bit much inwards so that her browline extrudes a bit much. So it has a bit of a skull like look.
I don't know if this helps you or wether you are aware of this already, but maybe take a look at anatomy of human face fat tissues. I saw it in a drawing video on youtube that showed how to draw faces in different ages and how and where wrinkles appear.

Something like this
aging-04-big.jpg

Maybe also see: https://grossepointedermatology.com/conditions-treatment/anatomy-of-facial-aging-2/

You can see quite well how the fat tissue shrinks during aging and also moves downwards. Leading to skin wrinkles and deeper eye sockets. While at younger ages the eye is surrounded by fat tissue.

On her right eye the eyelids look a bit big. So it feels a bit like they're swollen.

All the rest looks really good. I know that sculpting is really hard and it's much easier to criticise then making it better but I hope it helps you a bit to get even better. If not on this project in its late stage then maybe in the next.

Thank you, I am trying my best to take it easy. It is still painful moving around too quickly, and sitting in the same position for a while is not comfortable, so no work or hobbying for at least the rest of the week. And the lifting will have to wait a bit longer.

I don't know if you still want to make corrections at this stage but my points of criticism would be her left eye socket and cheeks.

I am definitely open for input, I don't think I'm quite finished with her fatial features/proportions, and as you can tell from the many modifications this sculpture has endured, I don't have a problem with making corrections.
From the above-posted photos, I agree with you about the left side of her face, something is off there.

The eye socket looks a bit too broad and the left cheek a bit flat. Also on the left side, the temple is facing a bit much inwards so that her browline extrudes a bit much. So it has a bit of a skull like look.

This is super useful information. I don't think I've picked up yet on how the facial fat organization influences & determines the look of the face, especially the eyes. I still have so much to learn!

No, I absolutely agree with you, and I value the input. What is very hard is allowing yourself to criticize someone's work, especially on the internet, because one is always worried that the other person will take it the wrong way.
But that is why I am on this forum, so that I can learn, and have the flaws in my work pointed out to me. Sometimes I will listen, sometimes I will not, but I am never going to tell someone to eff off because they criticize some part of my work. Especially not
if they provide such useful insights :)

Here is some further photos of the current face taken from different angles. Please have a look and let me know if you pick up any more flaws!

For now I will take a look at that left eye socket and temple, and see how I can apply your advice and the excellent info you provided. Once my shoulder feels a bit more solid of course :)

It's been about 20 days since my shoulder surgery, it is a new year and I am feeling very optimistic :) Happy New Year everyone!

I've climbed back into sculpting with all guns blazing.

First up, I've started working on a diorama that has been swimming in the back of my head for quite a while now: a diver and mermaid meeting under the sea.

Here is the diver:

naHMthsh.jpeg

and here is the mermaid:

RXuPJrYh.jpeg

Here is a mockup of the diorama, you can see the underwater mine they are swimming around,
and the bubbles from the diver. The positions are not final, they need some tweaking, and I
think I went overboard with the bubbles, but the basic shapes are there.

uyGN0zvh.jpeg

I plan trying something interesting with the colors & lighting in the scene.

Also, a while back I started on a rough sketch of my favourite mecha of all time, the Zentraedi
Queadluun Rau suit flown by the female warlord Miriya.

I've managed to make some progress, fleshing the sketch out, adding some panel lines and other details.
I'd say it is 90% there, and once done I plan on making some hollow castings of the parts.

65vm9B2h.jpeg

Last but not least, I've started refining the features on the panzer girl's face, as
well as smoothing some of the rough patches on her armor.

Here is my progress so far:

Happy new year Chris.
Wow - you've been quite productive the last days! That diver/mermaid diorama looks fantastic.
Looking forward to see this progressing further.

Happy new year to you too and glad to see you recovered.

Wow the deepdive diorama looks amazing. Really love the idea and what you've done so far. Really excited how it will turn out. Really impressive what small details you can do with greenstuff. I was happy when I can make it stick in gaps I want to fill, rather then on my tools, fingers, desk and god knows where else xD
Also the refining on the bust looks really good. Great work on the left eye. Looks very good now in my opinion.

Gorby what kind of surgery did you have the cuff? SITS muscles. So happy your back killing it with some stellar modelling and find panting.

Hey Graishak, thank you! It is fun working on the mermaid dio :)

Happy new year to you too and glad to see you recovered.

Thank you CyAniDe! Yeah greenstuff can be frustrating to work with, at the start it is too sticky and when it gets to curing it doesn't stick enough anymore :) But this is a satisfying piece to work on, it is coming together.
I've decided to redo the bust's eyes, something felt off. But I think it is coming together now, with your valuable input. I hope to post some updated photos soon.

Hey BAm! Long time no see. Thanks for stopping by!
Oh, I had frozen shoulder for the last couple of years, and being a diabetic and all it somehow never cleared up by itself. Turns out that they found a free-floating 2cm chunk of bone
lodged in my AC joint, I think it must have been there for the last 20 years. They thankfully were able to remove it, so I'm on the way to healing nicely.

Loving the power armor bust and the mermaid diorama. And happy New Year.

Thank you my friend, I'm glad you like these!

Here is a slow-rolling update on the diver & mermaid diorama.

One of our cats got to the mermaid, but luckily only dropped the figure off the table, so the end result
was a broken tail:

gxyJdvkh.jpeg

Easy enough to fix though, and this is what the current diorama setup looks like.
I redid the bubbles from the diver, but I think they are still a tad too large...

1ooYddxh.jpeg

Some details here:

nZmcOMvh.jpeg

nTrOQSUh.jpeg

At this point, both mermaid and diver (and bubbles) are still detached from the mine,
I have to hold everything carefully in place. I'll only be able to fix them once everything is
painted up.

Your pieces are incredible - what a show of talent along with skill. You have both my friend- As for the shoulder -I had torn 3 of the four cuff muscles .one was a massive tear that retracted up into the spine-the first dr told me atv3-4 months I could start lifting again - I took his advice and tore it again -so I went to another surgeon (one who had his own physical therapy regimen that he designed himself) he also needed to mattress stitch it to the bone interface -which is a lot stronger when it comes to the first six months of healing- the first dr just put in two anchors and tied it down . The mattress stitch literal binds the tendon down much stronger to resist it coming off while healing/ do two surgeries and the dr said give it one year -no lifting no therapy until he said so six months I was careful and the pain still there after six ninths tells you it’s still healing - so I’m about ine year you should have no pain . Finally when you dint feel any pain it’s then healed fully- so give yourself a year of coddling it- painting your should be able to do- keep all your paints in the vicinity of your left arm -you should only be painting with your good arm- this is the best advice and take as much Celedrin as you can afford - if it says only 3 capsules then take 6 etc. this will help the tendon / bone interface heal much stronger. So just listen to your body . Tendons and connective tissues have little vein and lil circulation -which is why it needs time to heal- and get yourself a TENS unit- they go for thirty dollars. When you start your pt they’d when you’ll be able to use your tens unit at home- very important to set it on low- you do not want a tens unit on high -your arm will uncontrollably jerk due to the electrical stimulation. Start low then Jumpnit up little by little- this will also speed up healing. You’ll be fine to paint. You’ll get through this - it’s not an easy ordeal- it’s a tough recovery but it will recover - if you need anything and want any info about this matter just let me know and I’ll be glad to help and see if I can give helpful input.

Great piece taking shape. Glad you could fix her tail. If it was my mini and if I had a cat that did this ... I'ld probably had changed dinner plans that day ...

I think the bubbles look cool. You could add a second stream. Looked at some pics. In most of them the bubble stream flows left and right next to the glasses. On some pictures it seems that the bullbes start big and get smaller while rising up.

I think the size of the big ones is okay. On the first pic the bubbles are nearly as big as the head.
The guy in the background on the last pic shows a situation as you have it. Single stream, small bubbles below, bigger above so I guess there is no right or wrong and the pattern is quite random.
